Origin- ally built as a memorial to an Indian woman, CHIEF-OF-ALL WOMEN, of the Raven clan of Tongass Island, Southeastern Alaska, the Totem Pole tells three legends. CTotem Poles are read like a column of Chinese figures, from top to bottom.j In the Hrst and second stories, the Raven, at the top of the Pole, holds the moon in his beak, indicating that it was he who Hrst let the moon out of its magic box. The last epi- sode tells of a Woman who, when she made derogatory remarks about frogs, found her husband and children turned into frogs. Fin- ally, she was forgiven, and her husband and Children Were restored to human forms.
