Shingle Honors Chief Seattle, Indian Peacemaker Shingle staff members of 1952 dedicate this annual to CHIEF SEATTLE, Indian war- rior and peacemaker, for whom Seattle was named. In December, 1854, on the shores of Elliott Bay, a thousand Indians, with Chief Seattle at their head, assembled to meet the territorial governor, Isaac Stevens. Chief Seattle's wisdom and goodness led him to warn and protect the struggling col- onists against hostile Indians, despite threats to his person, his authority, and his position as Chief. Had he joined in the Indian War against the settlers in 1855, the future and prosperity of the Queen City would have been delayed many years. The principle which dominated Chief Se- attle in his fifty years of leadership was Peace with Justice . Seattleites are proud that their city bears the name of this heroic Indian Chief.
