rom flze lilot ouse 7 The Shingles 1948 theme is unusually fitting. It pays tribute to an activity for which the town of Ballard has become widely known, The whole world has come to know of the picturesque Fishermen's Wharf and the annual prayer service with which the fishing sea- son is formally and reverently opened. Fishing has been the life work of many a father of Ballard High School boys and girls, and it is still carried on by strong sons and sons-in-law. A thousand years of literature, art and song have been enriched by the spirit and deeds of fishing and fishermen. I remember as a child the strong interest I had in Renouf's beautiful painting, The Helping Hand, with the little maid helping the old fishermen row the dory. Later on. I was thrilled by the adventures in Rex Beach's The Silver Horde. And I still enjoy the stirring melody and rhythm of such salt-flavored songs as Out on the Deep, picturing the Fishermen returning with their scaly spoil from their evening toil, and featuring the refrain. With a long sweep, boys, and a strong sweep. lads, and a song as along we go, drawn out with gusto. I should think that a fisherman would find reverent satisfaction in remembering that jesus found His first disciples beside their fishing boats on the shores of Galilee. xx 's H r s - Q gtsmswfs - Xkitxg J L I ART.
