Gene Northfield and Alice Bean Critically ey 'ng their masterpieces before sending them to press are Mr Nobles. A 1 Ad r, and jim jones, Tom jones and Pat Swansor We started our trek into the interior of our yearbook in September, 1943. Alaska furnished a timely theme and provided many appropriate opportunities and ideas for picturesque copy and art. The staff soon was exploring forests of copy and wandering through dangerous crevass-covered valleys of equipment shortages as a result of war-time priorities. Without the aid of a professional photographer, almost all of the Shingle pictures were efficiently handled by Bill McMorrow. The school-life picture campaign was a huge success and helped overcome the shortages caused by that little man with the black mous- tache. Then there were those copy mad people raving to themselves, and the deadline dilly-dallies' that piled the work up until the last possible minute before deadlines were to be met. But through the kind advice, persistent efforts, and encouragement of our adviser, Mrs. Olsen, and the assistance of Mr. Nobles' talented art classes, the staff has produced this Alaskan Edition for you. During our Wanderings we have become close friends, and after shar- ing trials and joys, We hope that you will enjoy our Arctic Adventure as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you. The stamp book brought to its owner the Weekly Talisman. and. the great event of the year, the Shingle. In addition it assured for its owner admission to all football and basketball games and other school entertainments. Throughout the year the students were urged to keep their stamp books up-to-date. Mr. Speck supervised the plan. and to him and his helpers goes much of the credit for its success. SL UICE SER VICE UIDE POST Keeping the school immaculate was the Fine accomplishment of Ballard's Sluice Service, or clean-up squad. The various tasks of this group increased because of the curtailment of janitor service. Nevertheless, through the dili- gent work of the members, our building was kept spic and span. For the purpose of fostering a clearer understanding of Spanish customs and habits, La Tertulia, the Spanish Club was organized. Its monthly meetings featured Spanish movies and well known guest speak- ers, including Jorge Luis Perez, Con- sul from Ecuador: Evelyn Ashlin, teacher from Brazil, and Jose Sam- pelayo, Chilean Consul to Seattle. Pan-American Day, skillfully planned by Mrs. Garred and Miss Russell, was really one of the high- lights of the year. The whole school participated enthusiastically in this celebration. TOT M LORE To encourage and develop the literary ability of the writers of Bal- lard, the Quill Club was organized. Any student who submitted an orig- inal piece of writing or was a mem- ber of the Creative Writing Class was eligible. The Club has prog- ressed splendidly under the super- vision of Miss A. Woods. FAT CHE WERS The Fat Chewers discussed the pro and con of topics of current in- terest to the students, such as school problems, foreign relations, the presidential election and post-war problems. Meetings were held once a month during the year with Miss E. Woods as the club's able guide. QUILL CLUB-Fourth Row: Raylene Peterson. Ethel Olsen. Henrietta Hamilton. jim Norton. Marion Taice. Some of the members of the class are bringing the day of Victory much closer by working in essential industries, and others, by applying themselves to their studies as much as possible. They are well represented in Honor Society, the Victory Corps, and other school activities. Basketball, football. baseball, and other athletic teams are strengthened by a host of Junior athletes. The Junior assembly was both interesting and entertaining. The juniors are fully capable of stepping into the vacancies left by the graduating Seniors President Ron Skagen Vice President Del mar Burris Secretary Treasurer Pat Anderson and Reporter Vern Vellat proved to be competent officers Each was active in school activities and did his bit to make the class of 45 one of the best in many years G V - 9 . . . . . .
