A freshman is a different breed. He doesn't know exactly where the PA building is or what it is. He's not sure about which class floats on Monday. But he is certain of one thing-that he is willing and en- thused about exploring the campus and discovering what composes the college atmosphere. He will eventually learn that college is more than a mere extension of the pedantic learning he has acquired during the past twelve years. lt is an explosive experience, a chance to extend academic and social learning. He learns the responsibility of attending classes without someone there to notice whether he cuts or not, he learns to live and share with the 200 other residents in his dormitory. Before long, the freshman will assume the responsibilities and prob- lems of a college student. Within thirteen months, he will candidly and critically observe with concern and delight the next different breed. I. Dorm life didn't appeal to everyone: some students were five-day residents. Freshmen were extremely responsive to the new social role the campus offered Solitude was an impossibility at popular campus -wide events.
