Not radical, but at least progressive . . . this phrase most aptly describes the trend that the editors of this book have intended to prevail. It can per- haps be best described as a feeling of growth, tolerance, and changeg a feel- ing of self-initiative and independence. With all due respect to those before us who have laid the foundations for and set the traditions of our school and its ideals, we feel that we must not only maintain a position equal to the pres- ent, but also set the pace for the future. Therefore, we proudly present the 1955 Orient . . . CHANGING WITH THE TIMES PROLOGUE

With the change that has come over our campus in recent years, new people and new ideas have appeared and dominated. More and more Ball State is becoming known and respected in many and varied fields. We are no longer classified only as a teachers college, although we maintain the reputation of consistently producing better educators. The modern trend then is growth in all areas and continued development and refinement of those in which we are already recognized. We as students owe a debt of gratitude to those who have made this progressive type growth possible. One who we feel is representative of this group and of the modern trend is DR. JOHN W. HANNAFORD. It is to him that we are pleased to dedicate this book. DEDICATION
