Ulhfcr not till ftlIlltIl'I'tIll' lo be 1l iS1, 7'om'n-ron-'s sun In Ihre may never rise, 762 M Till' Igiliillilll' Il0!ll'4Hl is lloiiifwltpli this year to Peter Anthony Larkin, M.A., the first Rhodes scholar in the history of the llalfour Technical School. From the l'niversity of Saskatchewan, Peter goes to the historic Ifniversity of Oxford, whose graduates have roamed the ways of men the wide world over and have achieved distinction and immortality. The privilege which is now his cannot he adequately expressed in the cold words of reason: rather docs it call for the imagina- tion and a sense of the romantic. Is it possible there is one solitary student in thc llalfour Technical School who is so dead in mind and soul that he does not thrill at the very thought of Peter's good fortune? t'ecil Rhodes was a shrewd and far seeing man of the world of international affairs. Ile was a great advocate and lover of the British Empire. The scholarships which bear his name are a tribute to that imperialistic dream in which he saw the British Iimpire increasing in power and greatness until it resembled the New .lei'usalem into which was brought the glory and the treasures of all nations. The dreams of mice and men, however, gang aft agley . t'ecil Rhodes dreamed greater than he knew. In the Providence of God a grander dream has taken possession of the mind and heart of A. Hodgkins, M.A., B. Com. mankind, a dream envisoned by Tennyson - The Parliament ot' Man and the Federation of the World . As the Rhodes Scholars go forth to Oxford from every corner of the globe, it is to be devoutly hoped that they will forget the narrower concepts of nationality, empire, and world supremacy and, in lieu of these less worthy concepts catch the vision, grand and glorious, ofa vast world brotherhood and comradeship which will not only enthrone God in its heart and conscience but which will also reverence and honour human flesh and blood as God's rich gift to the world. For well we know that in VVorld Vllar II human flesh has been regarded as the cheapest of all living flesh, to the eternal shame of humanity. To you, Peter Larkin, the staff and student body of Balfour Technical School say, Godspeed'-f-may every inspiration and success be yours in the coming years. May you be prompted by your Alma Page T Principal Mater, Saskatchewan l'niversity, and by Oxford to dedicate your life and talents to God and liuinanity. llalfour 'llechnical School will then proudly acclaim your name and lift up its heart in gratitude that you once walked its halls and engaged in its activities. Graduates ol' lialfour Tech! You, too, stand on the threshold of a new world fraught with peril but rich in promise. With our congratulations and sincere good wishes ringing in your hearts may you go forward to play your part worthily in shaping the world of tomorrow. lie assured that if men and women hew to the line of moral integrity and spiritual vision, nothing can prevent the coming of the New llay. The demand, however, for truthfulness and honest endeavor, conviction and obedience, honour and loyality is as iinperious as thc challenge is ominous. 'l'liis do and ye shall live. A. llonokixs, l'rincipal.
