A college is people-men and women laughing and working and thinking and striving together with an eye turned to- ward fur horizons. A college is growth, on essential tradition of building ever higher upon ihe solid foundations of the pasf. This book, then, is dedicated not Io any one person, but to all who earnestly en- deavor to increase the stature of our human institution and especially to those sincere builders of the years to come. --.... -gryyl .rki $2 ?! w ' Wm 1. a '4 'rtal . r , ' r V- ' .2 ghlli?t 43 ., 3' 13.59 25h 'f'FOE gun? f. And so we have turned the camera eye upon our college and recorded the results of the past, the progress of today, and an indication of the years ahead. Herein, on these pages. through the magic of photography we see Egldwin-Wallace of 1957-58, the year of .man- made moons, the beginning of better -' Iomo'rrows. - IN MEMORIAM . . . . a derby hat, a B-W sweater . . . and leather-lunged cheers-such is the memory of a man. A memory that brings to mind an attitude of service and spirit of a man for his fellow men. Myron W. Thornburg was affectionately called, The Beret: Breeze, because of his ardent support to all of our Yellow Jacket athletic events. Not weather, nor age, nor illness could quench his faithful devotion and colorfui spirit as he cheered his way through the years and into the heart of Baldwin-Wallace. Such devotion as his did not go unrecognized. He was made an honorary B-W cheerleader and Ietterman, and the i955 Grindstone was dedicated to him and to what he symbolized: good sportsmanship and the spirit of Baldwin-Wallace. On August 26, 1957, Myron W. Thornburg died. But the uBerea Breeze shall live forever within the heart of B-W . . . such loyalty, spirit, and devotion will not be forgotten. V.--. .- ...,w'h ' OI Baldwin-Wolloce College enters its 1 13th year of service at c: time when American education Is facing a period of dramatic readiustment. Our nation's colleges and Universities must not only make their plans to accommodate vastly in, creased enrollments but they.r must rethink their curricula in terms of the demands of a nuclear age as well. Our college faces the challenges of this new age with confidence. We know that there will be many problems in- volved in providing the physical facilities essential to our continued progress. The real challenge will come, however, in the for more demanding fields of intellectual and spiritual development. These are the areas in which Baldwin-Wcllace has always excelled. Our sons and daughters, nurtured in the finest traditions of Christian Education, have gone forth to lives of service all over the earth. Now we must turn all of our resources of heart, mind, and spirit to the great task of bringing the unfinished kingdom. With toy and with the strength which comes from the consciousness of high pur- pose, this college will seek to fulfill in the lives of its students the nobility envisioned by our Founders. A. B. When week after week the? bow consistently in defeat. Then. all at a sudden, they rise up out of their muddy graves ot disappointment and despair and defeat :1 learn that was favored to win by over- whelming odds. One answer could be that the Yellow Jackets were film a hot gas trapped 1n 0 int, unable to move one way or the other. Suddenly. the presswe was increased as the boys suffered the humiliation of continuous defeat. As the pressure Increased week after week, lhe Yellow Jackets started to get uncamtortable and before long they sought tor an escape from being shamed into nbstur'rty. The escape was Youngstown, a strong, hnrd-tighting ball club. The Yellow Jackets looked behind and saw five weeks of bad luck. Ahead they saw a light. It was a faint one, but they knew it they tried hard enough, this light would grow stronger and stronger as it would lead them to their first victory. At half time the Yellow Jackets pulled up along side the Pen- guins with a tie score of 7-7. The Ihird quarter saw the B-W team strike back with a 13-? lead. But the Penguins weren't giving up that easy. as they wuddled down the field to lead by one point. pulling ahead with a touchdown and the conversion. Nevertheless, the Yellow Jackets came in for the final sting, as the in: exptoded Into a 19-14 victory. The air smelled cleaner utter the game and the limll club mutd raise its head up and smile after :1 int: well done. The spirit was there, the determinatian and drive, and a feeling of unityr spread throughout the whole squad. The Jackets cap- tured thirteen victories while dropping fourteen, making it a very impressive season. The Yellow-Jackets commenced by mastering their first two opponents, Eastern Michigan and St. Vin- cent by scores of 90-85 and 85-74. With a record of three and two, they went to the Marine Corps Tournament and then to the Midwest Basketball Tournament duting Christmas vacation. Being away from the home floor proved disastrous for our team was pacified four times while only bagging one. Up0n returning from the tournaments, it was found, to everyone's displeasure, that Wynn Hawkins was declared ineligible by the NCAA because of his professional' standing. Put Gallagher Jasper Hardin Rooting from the bench are Ed Naughton. Tony Maren- dino, Jasper Hardin, AI Burns. and Mike Braphy. All through the season, the Jackets vacilluted be- tween the good and fair brand of ball. Towards the end of the season, our five came through by com- piling a winning streak of four contests over De- Paul, Central State, Detroit Tech, and Morris Harvey. There were many outstanding performances during the season. Wynn Hawkins established a career scoring record by surpassing the previous top output of1,288 points. He atso holds the individual scoring record of 43 points per game set In 1946. Another key performer, Howdy Wrightr enjoyed his bast year by tallying 488 points to lead the team in Scoring with an 15.1 average. Senior John Herbert and Ron Beswell provided much of the rebounding and played prominent parts in every game. AI Burns helped considerably by pouring in 349 points, rank- ing him third in scoring. Senior Jack Warning and Junior Pat Gallagher gave depth to the team. Three promising freshmen who saw action were Don Campbell, Tony Merendino, and Mike Brophy. The team as a whole, scored 2,126 points for on over- age of 78.7 points per game. At Burns Mike Brophy Ron Beswell, ball carrier. and John Herbert display quick action against Morris Harvey. Coached by John Summa, the Baldwin-Wellace wrestlers finished the 1957-58 season with five wins, three losses, and one tihthus accumulating one of the most successful seasons the college has ever seen. The matmen dropped their opening match of the season 16-12 as they fell prey:r to the powerful Rochester Institute of Tect'mctlotgnqf team. Clyde Simpson and George Asadorfon chalked up their twelfth straight wins in dual meet competition over the last two years. Then the matmen iourneyed to Indiana State Teachers Coilege to again find defeat. Returning home, theyr lost another, 12-21, to Kent State. B-W was leading 12-11 going into the last two matches, but the Flashes acquired c: pin and a default to give them victory. The default was mandatoryr because Pat Ragazzino suffered a shoulder separation. The grupplers then caught fire by trouncing Hiram, Edinboro, Ohio University, Allegheny, and Buffalo in that order for 0 five match winning streak. The mutmen finished the season by tieing Findlay, 14-14. George Asadorian, captain, was the onlyr B-W matman to take a first place medal at the Ohio State wrestling tournament. There were many very fine newcomers who added depth to the returning Iettermen. The returning Iettermen were Luke Izer, Frank Glazier, Torn Mowrey, Dick Overtu, Bob Stumph, John Pokorny, and Wes Davis. Out of forty' that went out for the team, Iwenty-five remained as the squad. The B-W nine had a long season this year. They played the first three contests at home against Oberlin, Ashland. Torn Mowrey and Penn. They then iourneyed to Youngstown. The next three games were held on our own diamond with Allegheny, IL, . . Yeungstown, and Alliance. After a long home stand, the 'd B-W nine invaded Ashland, Fenn, and Alliance. They con- t tended with an invasion by Akron in their final home game and took on Oberlin at the opponent's field. The season was as follows. First our cindermen clashed with Youngstown in the home raceway. Then they travelled to Eastern Michigan, Ohio University, and Kent State. The East Michigan squad proved to be our toughest opponent. Returning home, theyr took on Central State in a dual meet and participated In the O. A. A. U. and N. E. A. U. meets. Some of the returning men from last year's season are Jim Barnwell, Bob Carter, Ron Cole, John Herbert, Frank Kuntz, and Tony Schiuv0ni. This season's promising freshmen ore Dave Adams, Fred Booker, Chuck Price and Booker Griffin.
