In 1936, B-W will meet only schools of university rating. Among che stronger of these will be Syracuse, Louisville, and Wayne U. of Michigan. The jackets, however, look strong enough to make a very good showing with their tough future schedule. I i ? SYL DELCORSO KENNY LAN DICK JACKSON HAROLD STERNGLANZ OLLIE DAVIDSON RAY DEMBOSKE On Saturday, October 19, the Yellow Jackets tussled with the Reserve Red Cats before the largest crowd ever to witness a local college grid game. Some 25,000 people packed into League Park to see these two teams mix it up and were not disappointed. The teams battled evenly in the first half, but the Red Cats scored twice in the last half to win 27 to 14. E rl' I UICK DEPALO KENNY NOBLE GORDON SPLETE BILL HEFNER Individual jackets to gain special recognition last fall were Noble and Krause. Kenny Noble, the ace south- paw passer and line plunger was chosen as half on the All-Ohio honor team. Little Bill Krause, the 220 pound tackle, was also chosen for this mythical All-Ohio team. The highest scoring team in the nation --that is the monicker Worn by the 1935 Yellow Jackets. They scored 43,8 points to their opponents' 57 to gain this national recognition. The Jackets were kept out of the select group of undefeated teams by ,virtue of their 27 to 14 defeat at the hands of the Reserve Red Cats. Besides being the nation's leader, the Wattsmen were declared the Ohio Conference Champions and placed second in Cleveland's Big Four. The Jackets started this Very successful season by tossing the Buffalo Bulls around 55 to 0. John Carroll was next and wilted before the Jackets' aerial attack 33 to 6. Bowling Green was easily defeated by a 41 to 0 margin. Then came the jackets one and only defeat-the Reserve game. From there on things came very easy for the Jackets. They defeated in order: Ashland 60-Og Case 33-05 Kent State, 40-185 Findlay, 79-Og Wooster, 57-05 and Akron, 26-6. VARSTTY SQUAD - sa asketba One of the most thrilling games of the local cage season was the Jackets' game with Case's Rough Riders. Going into the final Eve minutes of play, Ray's boys held a nine point lead, but then the Carlin men found the hoop and slipped them in from all over. It took a pepped upn squad of Jacket subs to halt the Riders as they swung down the home stretch. '60 BASKETBALL Left to right: Johnny Fleming, Ward Powell, Ollie Davidson, Bob Rudes, Gordon Splete, Bill Davidson, Bud I-Iaerr, Olie Clson, Kenny Noble, Jim Carpenter, Norm Schoen, Bob Heinmiller, Ralph Adams, Dorrance Case. The Jackets began their season with an easy victory over the Ashland Eagles and followed this with victories over Detroit U., Reserve, Toledo, Akron, Case, and two victories over John Carroll. The victories were registered on their home court, but when they were visiting, the Wattsmen did not come out so well, for they lost all their games away from home. The teams who would not play dead for the Jackets were Akron, Case, Muskingum and Reserve. Wes- leyan was too tough on two occasions. . f ' 4 1 3 i S sl s S x S T E 2 Q S ,i BUD HAERR RALPH ADAMS KENNY NOBLE NORM SCI-IOEIN In the Big Four season the Yellow Jackets 3 started out in wild fashion when they soundly whipped the pre-favorite Red Cats at the Armory and then swept on over the Rough , Riders of Case and Carroll's Blue Streaks in thrill- ing, close-margin games. However, as the season wore on and the Jackets swarmed into Cleveland, they did not fare so well. Their first game in Cleveland was with Case and this wild-swinging affair ended with Baldy on the short end of a 38 to 36 score. The Jackets' only other defeat hap- pened on Reserve's floor when Red Katz got revenge 48 to 36. The Reserve defeat dropped Baldy Wally to second place, the position held at the close of the basketball season. 1 B A S K IE T B A lL L This season marked the close of the career of one of the best cagers ever to wear a Brown and Gold uniform. Ward Powell was a sensation for three years for the Yellow Jackets. In three years of competition Ward averaged 15 points per game and had a three season total of 635 points. In 1935-36 Powell's play was hampered when the pivot play was abolished, but he still gave a good account of himself. This year also brought to an end the cage career of Gordon Splete, Powell's running mate. In their sopho-- more year Powell and Splete burnt up the league, but a football injury slowed up Gordie and he was forced to spend quite a time on the bench the last two years.
