In the classes they are together, Daystudents and boarders, But they are different. The refuge of the boarder is the bell. She’ll never get to we before— The refuge of the daystudent is home. I’ll skip gym today— haven’t done my— 1 should have stayed home— Maybe she can’t— 'Way too long, I— And the sudden, respectful silence: Class has begun. At lunch there is talk. How do they expect— Applied to Vassar— This again? Do you want your ... And after lunch another class, two more classes. Before the mass indignity Of waving one’s arms up, down, up, down. This is the most stupid Why can’t we ...? But even so, you are proud (Who couldn’t, at that school ?) To be smart enough (Sure, it’s hard!) And tough enough (Is this only supposed to take an hour?) I thought of it first as a building An ugly, Victorian building A beautiful, ivied building A modern, impersonal building The victorian-ivied-modern building connected By a passageway frightening to run through at night With grotesque shadows And steam from the kitchen Making strange designs inside and out. And inside the building there is increased complexity. Inside are people, collectively, and people, individually. Inside Did the bell ring? Are boarders Yes, get up Whose lives are divided You haven't got much time And subdivided never have much time By bells, into school We get those tests back And gym Are there Fundies? But given forty minutes A division, only forty minutes, but complete— The people will do different things, though the division is the same. Did you get the sheets? Then he said and I said and he said— Darn it you didn't clean the— Come on, there’s the bell— And the daystudents Whose clothes carry in the cold Have now also to answer bells. Goodbye, mother, I’m late— Dear what time— don’t know, I’ll call— 4
