Text from Pages 1 - 98 of the 1957 volume:

The 1957 Annual Published by THE BALDWIN SCHOOL THE CLASS OF 1957 Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania o Plain and Fancy Yesterday, a friend of my mother's Said, Dear, where do you go to school ?” And I answered, Baldwin.” And she said, What is it like?” And do you know, I could not— I truly was unable—to tell her? I thought of it first as a building An ugly, Victorian building A beautiful, ivied building A modern, impersonal building The victorian-ivied-modern building connected By a passageway frightening to run through at night With grotesque shadows And steam from the kitchen Making strange designs inside and out. And inside the building there is increased complexity. Inside are people, collectively, and people, individually. Inside Did the bell ring? Are boarders Yes, get up Whose lives are divided You haven't got much time And subdivided never have much time By bells, into school We get those tests back And gym Are there Fundies? But given forty minutes A division, only forty minutes, but complete— The people will do different things, though the division is the same. Did you get the sheets? Then he said and I said and he said— Darn it you didn't clean the— Come on, there’s the bell— And the daystudents Whose clothes carry in the cold Have now also to answer bells. Goodbye, mother, I’m late— Dear what time— don’t know, I’ll call— 4 In the classes they are together, Daystudents and boarders, But they are different. The refuge of the boarder is the bell. She’ll never get to we before— The refuge of the daystudent is home. I’ll skip gym today— haven’t done my— 1 should have stayed home— Maybe she can’t— 'Way too long, I— And the sudden, respectful silence: Class has begun. At lunch there is talk. How do they expect— Applied to Vassar— This again? Do you want your ... And after lunch another class, two more classes. Before the mass indignity Of waving one’s arms up, down, up, down. This is the most stupid Why can’t we ...? But even so, you are proud (Who couldn’t, at that school ?) To be smart enough (Sure, it’s hard!) And tough enough (Is this only supposed to take an hour?) And though you hate chauvanism You are not a man without a country. Come on Baldwin! What’s the score? The woman was still waiting, politely. Well,” I said, It’s just a school.” She looked a trifle blank. I like it,” I added lamely, And she said she was glad. I was desperate, and asked, Are you coming to the concert tonight? It should be lovely. I’m wearing—” But she was looking at my grubby uniform And my awful shoes that I forgot to polish, Unable to reconcile the Plain with the Fancy. It’s come as you are,” I said, And left her standing. 5 To the Class of 1957: At no time in history has the world offered opportunities as great as those open to your generation. Mankind is beginning to realize that all men are created equal, that national rivalries are unprofitable, that from wars only Pyrrhic victories result, that if any group of the human race is depressed, ill-fed, ignorant, all mankind suffers. More and more we are bound to the fortunes of all men. The simultaneous advances and discoveries in scientific knowledge in various parts of the world are a further illustration of the essen- tial oneness of man. If the force of these truths is fully accepted, the possibilities of human progress are boundless. How then can mankind in this wonderful age find leadership and the right direction? I believe this exists in the power of indi- vidual character, the invincible force of high moral principles main- tained in every relationship. The man who does his best to live by these has an influence far out-weighing any human mistakes he may make. Basic to the development of this kind of character must be the conviction that honesty is the mainspring of all right human rela- tionships, whether personal, public, or international. In school the honest effort to do your best, to use the many and varied opportuni- ties, to achieve growth through correcting your mistakes, to persist under difficulties, to face the test of classroom and school respon- sibilities with the determination to give unstintingly all you possess to the undertaking—this is the beginning of establishing a firm character. You learn to avoid the snare of comparison with the results of others. What matters is that you yourself are growing, that you are gaining strength as a person who can use her powers, intellectual and personal, that you are striving to mould your character accord- ing to the highest principles, ignoring the temptations to do less than your best, to take the easy way of dishonesty, carelessness and selfish- ness. Many of you have come far along this road. As you leave sec- ondary school and start out on a more adult and independent phase of your life, self-appraisal is essential. How well have you laid the foundations of your character? Are you striving to develop moral courage? Upon your answer to these questions and upon what you do to strengthen the weaker links in your character will depend the happiness and success of your life. Rosamond Cross To Mrs. Cross You had become a part of our lives. Your warm, under- standing smile lightened our spirits when responsibility seemed too heavy. You gave us confidence when all effort seemed futile. After a long, hectic day, your serenity and peace of mind comforted us. For all the many things you shared with us, although you are no longer with us, we wish to express our deep- est gratitude. 8 9 Catherine B. Pabst It is no vague generalization” when we say that our class has had a wonderful adviser. We are grateful to Miss Pabst for many things”—as specific illustration, we refer to her help in time of trouble with the selection of our class ring, the design of our sky- blue blazer, the composition of our song, To Ivy-covered Buildings Tall,” our presentation of senior skits, and the creation of Plain and Fancy.” These memories are inseparable from those of twinkling blue eyes . . . Once over lightly” ... the bookbag overflowing with papers . . . and Now class XII!” . . . the encouragement, the enthusiasm, and the exuberance with which Miss Pabst guided the Class of Blue from ’51 to ’57. 10 Officers of the class of 1957 Left to right: P. Bowden, vice-president; S. Mollenaur, president; L. Faylor, treasurer; J. Sloane, secretary. Class Song—1957 To ivy-covered buildings tall, where friendships have been born; To goals so highly raised for us, to which our lives arc sworn; These are the ties of loyalty to which we ll always cling As we, the class of '57, our senior song do sing, our senior song do sing. With joyful strains to Baldwin's name The song of blue we raise; To truth and strength and loyalty we dedicate our praise, we dedicate our praise. So swiftly has the time passed by, preparing us to know The separate ways we each must choose, when from these halls wc go. The senior bell peals forth its song, its strains are loud and clear: They symbolize the standards high the class of blue holds dear, The class of blue holds dear. With joyful strains to Baldwin s name The song of blue we raise; To truth and strength and loyalty We dedicate our praise, we dedicate our praise. We could be sure that Miss Brush and Mrs. Ridge would be ready to help. These favorites of ours added much to Baldwin through their interest in the school and in each girl, as well. Since this has been their final year as corridor teachers, we should like to bid an especially fond farewell to Miss Brush and Mrs. Ridge. We do not say simply good-by,” but we add the wish that the years to come may bring you the happiness which you brought to us at Baldwin. 46 Row 1: left to right, C. Gale, A. Giraitis, P. Hughes, B. Service League The Service League is an organization to which every girl in the school belongs. It offers all of us the opportunity to help others financially and also by actual work in the community. The funds this year were raised, for the most part, by pledges, the foodstore, second-hand books and uniforms, and a very successful Christmas Sale which cleared over $2,000. Together, these funds amounted to over $4,000 and were divided among different organiza- tions such as Care, The Japanese International Christian University, The Foster Parents Plan for War Children, and the Baldwin Day Nursery. Also, several drives were made to collect money and clothes for Hungary. The community projects supported were The University of Pennsylvania Hospital, The Friends’ Weekend Workcamps, and a Cerebral Palsy hospital. 58 Religious Planning Row 1: left to right, W. Committee The purpose of the Religious Planning Committee is to provide each girl with an opportunity to develop her own ideas as she increases her knowledge of religion. This year the theme of the R. P. C. is Comparative Religion. This theme has been carried out by means of speakers, informal discussions and conferences. Eight members attended the Buckhill Falls Religious Conference in February and the one day Conference in April, which was sponsored by the Northfield League. Club members have also organized and presented Wednesday and Sunday evening prayers throughout the school year. An R. P. C. shelf has been established in the library where students may obtain books on religion for either research or enjoyment. 59 Debating Society Row 1: M. L. Leavitt (Head), S. Sun. Row 2: S. Pu, N. Athletic Association The Athletic Association, new this year, was organized for the purpose of encouraging and directing school spirit, fostering good sportsmanship, and arranging intramural and extramural activities. All members of classes nine through twelve automatically belong to the A.A. The governing board is com- posed of two representatives from each class and the captains from each sport. Numerous activities for the student body have been organized by the A.A. during its first year of existence. Ping pong, badminton, and tennis tournaments have been held, as well as a faculty-student basketball game, and a Field day of inter-class sports. Moreover, a cheerleading squad has been organized, and the existing system of awards has been changed. Money raised during the year by food sales, the Christmas Sale, and the faculty-student basketball game, bought not only awards for the various tour- naments, but also the greatly needed robes for the swimming team. Although progress has been made, only the wholehearted support of the entire student body can enable the A.A. to attain its ultimate goals. 65 Row 1: left to right, M. Gaston, M. Adam, B. Fine, J.
