Mr. Hertenstein I Advisor igzmg The Silver Streak, published bi-monthly by the Journalism class, was the first otticial newspaper of Baldwin Park High School. Mr. Hertenstein, the very understanding advisor, deserves much credit for his outstanding leadership in working with a hard-driving, but inexperienced staff. Since the beginning of the year, There have been many improvements on the paper. Two big issues were put out, one at Christmas an one at Easter, along with the other bi-monthly issues. Top scoring honors of the year went to end Jack Tucker, who posted a grand total of thirty-one points. Selected as Captain this year was Jim Smotherman, who did most of the passing, and was the team's dependable work horse. Coaches John Greeley and Curt Clemmer deserve a lot of credit for starting the season without experienced players, but still managing to bring the team around in good fashion. The organization enables the girls to before better acquainted with one another through intramural athletics and competition. Their goals are: to promote friendship and good sportsmanship, and to be of service to their school and community. The 'tol- lowing managers served: Volleyball, Eileen Brodsky, Basketball, Roberta Lacey, Speedball, Myra Bertram, Swimming, Marilyn Parker, Tennis, Shirley Divine, and Softball, Marie Branson. This year the G.A.A. teams attended their first fall playday at Covina High School. The second was attended in the spring. Volleyball opened our G.A.A. sports season with a bang this year, with Janet Stewart's team completing the sea- son as the winner. The G.A.A. girls did an excellent VOLLEYBALL job of playing the fast moving game, and their support helped our school in the playday held at Covina High School. SOFTBALL I 'Q TENNIS Tennis was the only individual sport offered in G.A.A. this year. There were twenty-one girls in the first semester tennis club. Because of the late finishing of our new tennis courts, the girls were unable to participate as much as they wished and needed, however, with the com- pletion of the courts, the club gained ground rapidly. As spring came, so did softball, and sportsman- ship, cooperation, and fun radiated on the soft-I ball diamond. During the season enthusiasm for the game mounted and keen competition came to a climax with the varsity teams being chosen to represent our school in the spring playday. BASKETBALL This year basketball was rated as one of the favorite sports. Basketball is a sport that re- quires a great deal of skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship among the players on the teams. The basketball teams were re- presented at the playday held at Covina, and although they were not the victors, the teams represented their school with honor. YA v' f ' ,f SPEEDBALL Speedball was a maior sport played in G.A.A. this year and was enioyed by all the members of the organization. Speedball is a game that combines basketball and soccer rules, and the results make a game that is Thrilling to play and Thrilling to watch. The game is the most vigorous major sport participated in by the members. The game was derived from football. The speedball team represented the G.A.A. in the spring playday. Norma Anderson was the manager chosen for this sport and did a very good iob. S y l I -c Al'N,t Lovf GRAIN? GE E , ,. L oo lint bJELl...- 'E Lf fi sffl Nou! Say., , Goin M sway? LJn1'clm LooKfll'A1? VANIMAN, VICI2::iT:4::lIFAL L March 27, 1952 Students and Faculty Baldwin Park High School It is my distinct pleasure to congratulate you on your suc- cessful production of this Year Book, the first history of the activities of your high school. It is entirely fitting that this first edition pay tribute especially to the Board of Trustees: Mr. James G. Hodges, President, Mr. Joseph F. Wood, Clerk, Mr. Truman Johnson, Mr. W, Glenn White, and Dr. C. E. Pancoastg who, together with the Superintendent, the Citizens Committee, and the many other interested people of the District helped to lay the foundation for this splendid school. The present Board of Trustees, whose names appear on this letterhead, have intelligently and unhesitatingly carried on with the philosophy laid down by their predecessors as new buildings and greater services are and will be added to the plant. No tribute to public education can be complete without ack- nowledging the efforts of many citizens who gave of their time and who, by their vote, were ready to assume the ne- cessary financial obligation in order that their children might have the educational opportunities they justly deserve I, therefore, join with you in congratulating the people of this area in their generosity. I hope that we may take full advantage of the opportunities afforded us and trust that this new high school will take its place in the great free educational system of our country.
