Dr. Ducker BOARD GF EDUCATIO M 7' The unsung heroes of the Baldwin Public School System How many times have you seen Bored of Edu- cationu written on a studentis text book? Plenty, we'll bet. But, have you ever thought much about the real Board of Education? Few students are aware of the debt they owe to the Baldwin Board of Education. Members of the Board give time and energy toward recognizing and solving many of our problems, and are the final authority in all important matters concerning the Baldwin schools and their students. The board has only one regularly-scheduled meeting a month, but actually they meet about six nights a month in order to get their work done. Members are elected for a term of three years and receive no pay at all for their services. The regular monthly meeting is divided into two parts, the first dealing with business. Members hear and discuss reports from the superintendent of con- struction and the Treasurer. After this, the board deals with the hiring of new teachers, their salaries, and working conditions. Next on the agenda is the budget, which must be carefully and exactly planned. Appropriations must bc made to the building fund, teachers' salaries, maintenance of schools, and nu- merous other expenditures. Even then their work may not be over, for the bigger appropriations must be approved by the taxpayers. Before the Board makes certain decisions, they try to get the views of various groups - the Chamber of Commerce, Home and School Organizations, the Parent-Teach ers Associations. Kiwanis, and others. The second part of the meeting deals with any improvements or suggestions which can be made in school policy. Policy has to do with the Board's goal, which is to make the student a better citizen. The Board tries to make the public aware of its aims, as public co-operation is necessary before they can hope to achieve their goal. 1 Members of the Board are: James H. Ferns. Presi- dentg Leonard Vielbig, Vice-President: Ralph P. Morgan, Vice-President, Vfaldo R. Dollard, and Franklin Bear. DMI TR T10 -M: -: i -0 yo 1 4-. - . 4- -4.-V me -ur. The three guide-posts of our high school life. Dear Seniors: Each one of you has come to the close of a period of time extending over twelve years of your lives in which you had the cherished opportunity of ac- quiring knowledge through study and instruction. lluring that learning process you were privileged to become acquainted with many books in the fields of history. literature and science. I assume that most of you have enjoyed many fruitful hours in our high school library. You had the advantages offered in our democratic nation, free access to books of all kinds in all these spheres of knowledge. as well as contact with teachers who taught you how to use this lvook learning wisely. Moreover. not only did you collect facts and dates and statistics. but at the same timc. let us hope. through your association with one another and your teachers. you gained an understanding of the true yalue of a sound and basic education. lfducation isa system of study and discipline that must not stop at the close of your high school career. Surely' learning does not cease upon graduation. You must continue to educate yourself. whether you are planning further formal schooling or not. Through the years up to now you have had most Mr. Thayer of the big decisions made for you. Now your suc- cess and failures are in your own hands. You must accept responsibility for yourselves and your own lives. You must trust your basic training and realize the necessity for self-discipline. Through further study you will prepare yourselves for the right kind of living. l should like to suggest that you avail yourselves of the facilities of public libraries where there is boundless material on any subject. Keep the book of knowledge open. You have completed only a few chapters in it and there are many more if you take advantage of the vast store of information at your command. Continued concentration on growth and progress in learning should contribute in a large measure to your happiness and welfare. May' I wish you success and satisfying rewards in your future endeavors. '52 also saw the introduction of the two platoon system as Baldwin racked up a 4-4 record. Led by' co-captains Bill Hambrecht and Don Combes, Baldwin overcame its first two op- ponents, Mineola and Glen Cove. Junior Chuck Gondoli, flanked by seniors Tom Murtha and Bill Downey, was the big offensive gun. ln the third game the Wavfe came up against a tough line and a lucky pass play' to lose 6-0 to Lawrence. On the following Saturday, champion Mep- ham provided the opposition. ln a close game the long runs of fabulous Bill Sandie meant the difference for Mepham. The gridders hadnit crossed the goal line in three games after Hempstead handed them their third straight defeat. Getting back on the winning side, the team downed Central. ln this game ,lunior Ed Reece came into his own as the team's passer and Senior Ray Seager played a sterling game on defense and offense. The Colden Wave suffered a relapse the next week, falling before a powerful Sewanhaka eleven. The players, however, were just get- ting the mistakes out of their system in prep- aration for the Freeport game the following week. After a week of undercover practice at Steele School, the big day arrived. As game time came around, the field was a sea of mud and it was raining. ln the first quarter Bald- win played a great defensive game but was unalmle to move too well through the mud. With two minutes to play' in the half, big line- man Ted Nelson picked up a Freeport fumble and ran sixty-five yards for a touchdown. ln the second half, Baldwin twice came within a yard of the goal line hut failed to score. Million-Mila-r Clear For Action' SOCCER Guided by Coach Leland Sweezey and under the leadership of the fabulous fraternal soccer combina- tion, co-captains Ken and Ritter Smith, the 1952 Baldwin soccermen fought and battled their way through tough SSAL competition to a solid third place finish. This year's varsity squad was composed of 13 skillful players, each of them constantly spurred on by competition for a position on the starting eleven. These thirteen soccermen were Dick Ackerman, Jack Barnett, Frank Conlon, Rod Longman, Rolf Mah- ler, Ray Montano, Cliff Olivera, Jerry Potaschnik, Dick Skillman, Ken Smith, Ritter Smith, Don Vogel Boot it! and Dick Waters. Outstanding among these thirteen were Ken Smith, center, Ritter Smith, left wing, and Ray Montano, goalie, each being chosen for all-scholas- tic. These three provided the nucleus for our 1952 squad. Baldwin's biggest problem this season lay in its inability to come up with the big ones. Two pound- ings by powerful Sewanhaka and two crucial losses to runner-up Valley Stream, account for Baldwin's third place finish. Both matches with Valley Stream were decided by one point and were thrillers that could have gone either way. J I ' J l' x ' ' ' K Ib f v ? Qgxaifi Q A if ',... V 3 U e uyloiih' ,t5mitlY BA KETBALL Its not every year that a high school basketball team finds itself blessed with a classy center like co-captain Bob Malone, tremendous rebounders like Bill Hambrecht and Frank Kra- nich, an aggressive driver like Dick Scerbo, a shifty play- maker like co-captain Kenny Smith, and a sixth man who could make anyone elseis varsity like Phil Seefried. Malone, a key man in the plans of Coach Marty Kilcom- mons and the backbone of the Varsity, averaged over twenty points a game, scored 35 in one contest, and constantly amazed the fans, players, coaches, and just about every- body else with his ability. He didnit have to be a one man team, either, because there wasn't a weak spot on the start- ing five. As the season began, it looked like Baldwin, which had once been the door-mat of the league, was finally going to have its big year. After romping through their first four games, the team seemed to be heading for first place honors. And this is when they met Mepham. Nobody knows why, but Baldwin just canit beat the '4Pirates.H Always present is the Mepham jinx, nervous tension, a bad night, the Hbreaksu or whatever you want to call it, but the outcome is always the same. After this first loss to Mepham, Baldwin ran all over the next five teams it faced. Included in this winning streak was a sound victory over Hempstead, which was destined to win the championship, and which defeated Mepham twice dur- ing the season. And then it happened again. In a tightly fought contest, Mepham once again came out on top over their 'fcousinsn from Baldwin. This loss shattered the team's morale and was the beginning of a late season slump. After defeating Valley Stream, the team still had a chance to come out on top of the heap, but a two point upset by Freeport and a loss to Sewanhaka following a victory over Lawrence, just about finished the Golden Wave for the season. Other members of the team were Mike Wind, Elmore Keener, Dick Hirshkind, Bob Brunner, Bob Yohe, Sid Johnsen, Charlie Methe, and Ritter Smith. They provided a strong bench, and some were being groomed for the following years starting five Backboard Magicians who performed Backboard Magic. ' ' Yi' I v4' Q 0 x . . SOFTBALL Handicapped by the loss of eight members of his 1952 starting team, Coach Frank Uiskin still man- aged to lead his softball men through a relatively successful season. ln Baldwinis softball history, 1953 will be remembered as a year of experimentation and rebuilding. Returning members of the squad were Ray Mon- tano, Elmore Keener, Bill Manck, Richard Waters, Bob Kaplan, Ted Nelson, Gerry Dunn, Bill Pruden, Frank Ruggiere and Bob Phildius. A great many additions were made to the roster as the season progressed, especially from the ranks of underclass- men. Of the ten players mentioned above, the only two with extensive previous experience were Ray Mon- tano and Elmore Keener. Montano had worked as a catcher and third basemen during the previous two seasons and was a solid infield fixture this year. Keener played centerfield for the '52 varsity team and this season provided a steadying influence for an inexperienced outfield. F, '. . I 5 1 x !.h 1 F IQ., 1, .nga Q s , ' ' f 4 ,,,,,,, --fr: M M . Members of last year's team who were considered lor the team are: Norgie Smith, Elaine Freeman, Claire Davis, l'at llurgctl, Pat Winterberg, Irene Kolb, Margie Shea, Pat Duncan, Pat Bleier, and Peggy Horwitz. The season was climaxed with the annual five-school playday. Hoop Crazy 55 BASKETBALL Circle, or hdonlt pass across the basketw could be heard shortly after the new year was heralded in, as the feminine counterparts of B.H.S.'s Varsity practiced basket- ball in the gym. Under the direction of Miss Helen Gould, the girls became quite expert with the ball and hoop. Since there were so many girls out for basketball, the teams had to be split into two groups- the class honor teams and pie teams. BADMINTON Approximately eighty girls turned ont for the fall session of badminton. They spent much of their time developing the skills and techni- ques that make a good player. Ladder tourn- aments were started and used as a basis for choosing the school honor team. The activity was under the direction of Miss Helen Gould. assisted by her sports manager. Miriam Cottheimer. The Seniors came in first in the games tour- nament for the G.A.A.F. with the Juniors. Sophomores and Freshmen following in that order. Working on a top-rung-takes-all basis, the girls set up ladder tournaments. Those who got there firstest with the mostest were Jackie Smith and Connie Masciale Cwho played as a doubles teamj and Eleanor Meinert, Paula Fricke, and Eileen Gottlieb who played singles. Miss Elna Biker was the advisor, and Con- nie Masciale, sports manager. Q X I! Sport for the Fun of It BOWLING Pity the poor pinboys when the B.H.S. bowl- ers hit the alley. With all those lucky strikes,', the boys really got a workout setting ,em up again. All this activity was carried on under the coaching of Mrs. Justine McConaughy, assist- ed by sports manager, Marilyn Horowitz. The teams are picked according to the aver- ages of the girls who bowl ten times during the season, the top five comprising the school team.
