Jfiffffwf It is a fact that every person on this earth must live with others. How well our family lives together under the roof of our planet varies from war to the fullest love. Most of us have not seen either of these extremes, but we have seen in our high school something that is really great, people working together. We did not work and live together at Baldwin High School this year because it was a requirement of state law or a recommen- dation of the North Central Committee, but because we found that it was easier and more fun to be with and help others. This teamwork was exhib- ited on the football field, in the classroom, at play practice, after school or anywhere that we were together, we were honestly interested in the other person and in living with that person to help him, ourselves, and the entire school. This year was truly one in which we did Get it together. 3 f 1 ., y f. llc:-'?l.if'i5E5'f :'f-?w5I53- e H ' ,,g12WWfSifsiYfW2 hi far- ,tax 5,2 ,: M .i ,1.iri34'8f1itf2s2f'W Q QQXK, 'V' H .ge Y aw? 5, in 35 if fk L 'HQ 4 If ' N111 . Celebrates 25th Yr. nniversar Stand and Serve With Spirit in the Silver Seventies was the theme for the 25th anniversary of the Kansas Association for Youth which was cel- ebrated at the regional conference held at Baldwin High School. The 450 participants who attended the con- ference were involved in work shops, discussion groups, and the exchanging of ide as. The guests for the conference were Miss Wanda May Vinson, director of Kayettes, and Mr. Keith Akins, direc- tor of Kays. Both guests spoke to the group about their individual organiz- ations and also presented awards to the outstanding clubs. Anne Lawson, president of B. H. The conference was a great success because of the hard work of the club. During the Christmas season the KAYS went carolling with the KAYETTES, and had a party afterwards. To receive their 3000 point award, the club held one of its hardest membership drives ever, the members made posters to increase membership, talked to new students about joining, and held meetings that were oriented to the new member. One of the highlights of the year was the panel discussion for a joint meeting of the KAYS and KAYETTES. T ics of discussion were dating, girl and boy friends exchanging gifts, and the Women's Lib movement. As a project to raise money, the group controlled traffic for the Baldwin Invitational Basketb Tournament. With the help of Mr. Larry Colson and Mr. jack Brookshire, sponsors, the KAYS had a year that truly exemplifi the theme of the conference, Stand and Serve with Spirit in the Silver Seventies . op- all Miles Stotts, KAY president looks on with Dierck Casselm an, K. Bulldogs Suffer nly Loss t Clawsof ildcats With hard work, determination and tremendous spirit, the Baldwin Bull- dogs freshmen football team ended the 1970 season with a very successful five win and one loss record. The Bullpups rolled over five of six opponents, averaging better than 28 points per game. The stop unit of the freshmen allowed a fantastic one point per game. The Bullpups' only loss came at the hand of the Louisburg Wildcats by the Score of 8-6. With hard, grinding work and spirit, the freshmen rebounded from their opening season loss to roll over their five remaining opponents and shut them off without a score. The season has been a great success and a great start for the freshmen and Coach Bell and his team should be congratulated for the fine job they did. Baldwin Bulldogs Capture Their Third Consecutive Conference Football Title As the 1970 football season drew to a close, the Baldwin Bulldogs found themselves in a tie for the Jayhawk Conference title with Eudora. Before the season started the Bulldogs were picked to finish no better than fourth place in the conference, but the 'Dogs responded to the challenge and finished the season with eight wins and one loss to win their third consecutive conference ch a.mpionship. With almost a completly new team starting practice for Baldwin, there was room for doubt. The hard work, sweating, and bleeding the Bulldogs went through over- came that deficit and enabled them to have a sparkling season. One of the lighlights of the year was the 20-6 homecoming victory over Eudora. The Bulldogs played hustle and hit football all season long as they were usually outsized and outweighed by their opponents. The hard hitting brand of football common to all Baldwin teams, pulled the Bulldogs through the season. Baldwin's defensive te am shut out four opponents while allowing only 56 points to be scored against them for an average of only six points per game. The Bull- dogs' offensive machine averaged 32. 5 points per game in rolling 293 total points. Seven Baldwin Bulldogs made the ALL Conference Team for 1970. The offensive members on the mythical team were Doug Turner, fullback, Bruce Chambers, half- back, and David Jones, center. The defensive members were: Doug Chanay, tackle, jim McMillen, guard, Jeff Chubb, end, and Mike Atwood, back. The other members of the team did not make the conference team, but they still made a great contribution to the team effort. The championship this year was the third consecutive title for coach Merle Veneble with the Baldwin Bulldogs. His assistant coach for those titles was coach Lawrence Colson. 16 E .Q I 2 Perry ,ff Ii ll 'f 0 122 9 i 3 '91 , XX 31339 G sri , O, .4 w. 1 if .0 ,Arab Pep Club girls hit the sack after long hours of planning homecoming i festivities. i QFIRST ROWJ: Donna Young, Student Council rep. 5 Dee Randel, parlia- mentariang Peggy Fisher, treasurer, QSECOND ROWJ: Susan Richards, vice-president, Martha Doty, presi- dentg and Nancy Hey, secretary promoted spirit in the Pep Club. An added event this year included an interclass float competition. Basket- ball season brought a lot of hard work and extra hours with Pep Club's responsibilities involved in Ba1dwin's Second Annual Invitational Basketball tournament. Throughout the year the girls were busy with poster- making, planning pep skits and the occasional serenading and decorating of the boys' houses. Mail call and maid service at lunch were just two of the imaginative ways that the Pep Club helped to raise school spirit. Martha Doty, president, did an exceptional job in lead- ing the club with her school spirit and enthusiasm. During the course of the year, the Student Council introduced the idea of an open forum where high school students were allowed to rap about any of the projects that the school had adopted or simply to get reactions of the students about high school life in general. The council also worked on plans for a student lounge, and it became a reality after many hours of work and funds contributed by classes. Students enjoyed the juke box daily and this made lunch hour more enjoyable. The members were actively involved as well, in the beautification of the school grounds. Another project was the build- ing and upkeep of the outside announcement board. One important event of the year was the hosting of a successful Student Council workshop which involved much work and careful planning 5 to orga- nize the discussion groups was an event all its own. The workshop was intended to be a kind of swap shop to exchange ideas to other councils in various schools around eastern Kansas. The purpose of Baldwin High School's Student Council is to be a bridge between the students and the faculty-administration set-up, and this year's coun- cil accomplished this objective extremely well. Besides being in skits, the com- mittee also decorated the team's bus with food and candy during both football and basketball season. MBU Club Sounds Gff in Cheering Block Letterman's Club created their own cheering block this year. The block was designated by purple derbys, Bulldog T- shirts, and letter jackets. Money-making projects for the club were the selling of purple and white stocking caps and a bas- ketball throw at the Student Council carnival. The caps were a popular expres- sion of loyalty to the teams. The B Club members supported the teams with real enthusiasm and expressed a great deal of sportsmanship throughout the entire year. The B Club wrote and drafted a new constitution which was accepted. During football and basketbal seasons, Spirit Committee supported the teams in various ways. Students always looked forward to the news of the school every two weeks. The staff pub- lished articles and stories that were of interest to the majority of the students--something which is difficult to do. Such issues as un- rest over the dress code, behavior at lyceums, faculty and admini- stration unrest over the students' unrest, lunchroom etiquette, and apathy among all students, were just a few of the more popular issues that the paper had to deal with. Members of the newspaper staff were Patty Williams, editor-in-chief, Miriam Kinyon, Connie Lindholm,'Ric Hitchcock, Mike Atwood, Donna Anderson, and Nancy Hey. Walter Hill, yearbook editor, prepared the foundation for this year's annual. His diligent work and concern for the perfection of the yearbook never ceased while compiling pictures and copy into a complete story of the memorable events of the year. Bob Martin and Steve Lynch spent prolonged hours in the dark room printing up their assigned pictures. Martha Doty, editor of school activities and organizations, along with her assistant, Julie Davis, hassled over the many' clubsfand highlights of the year to make the reader relive the past experiences of the year through action pictures and copy. Connie Lindholm, editor of the senior class, her assistant, Nancy Hey, and Susan Plank, editor of underclassmen, took interest in compiling pictures of those who make a high school unique--stu- dents. Sports action was put together by Steve Lynch, editor, and Jerry Seele, assistant. The annual staff tried to have the reader travel from September through May, noting some of the important events which made each day a year of rich memories. F.B.L. . Plans Ahead The Future Business Leaders of America, under the leadership of Carmen Collins, president, kept busy with its aim of strengthening it members' ability and leadership in the field of business. Members worked on service projects and their Twelve Purposes. The F.B. L.A. 'ers went to various conferences and made several trips in order to improve themselves. Seven members and their sponsor atten- ded the National Leadership Conference held in Philadelphia last june. Officers attended the Fall Workshop in Emporia during Sept. 1970. The Regional Conference, Feb. 4, and the State Conference, April 15 and 16, were both attended by Baldwin F.B. L.A. 'ers. Dur- ing the year, four members of the B.I-I. S. chapter were candidates for regional and state offices. In order to enrich their evening meetings, various speakers from local businesses were invited to present programs. They spoke on their business experiences and the specializations of their particular careers. To heighten school spirit and encourage members to pro- mote school loyalty, F.B. L.A. sold school booster buttons and planted flowers in the divider by the parking lot. At the end of the year, an award was given for the Outstanding F.B. L.A. The class started off the year by taking first place for the junior class home- coming float. Competition was between the four classes. The class worked very hard on the float and the results proved to be success- ful. Other activities were a booth for the Student Council Carnival last January and putting up the flags during the months of October and February. The class was in charge of all football concessions this ye ar. A new addition to our class who aided the football te am as right tackle, was Rex Pippenger. Among their accomplishments was the successful junior-senior ban- quet and prom, To Rome With Love, which they gave their junior year. Alsonas juniors, they presented the play OUR HEARTS WERE YOUNG AND GAY. In their final year, as seniors, the class participated in homecoming celebrations by contributing a class float, and later in the year by hav- a fishing booth for the Student Council Carnival. Class meetings were spent planning for the senior trip and preparing for graduation cere- monies. Outstanding seniors in football who proudly represented B. H.
