BALDWIN HIGH SCHOOL 4653 CLflIRTON BLVD. PITTSBURGH, Pfl 15236 VOLUmE 45 1987 “Catch a wave and you’re sittin’ on top of the world” — The Beach Boys It was back in the sixties when everyone pulled on his jams, grabbed his surfboard, and headed to the beach to “catch a wave.” Students have revived this style in the Jams fashion craze. And now the Balthi gives you a chance to “catch the wave.” This theme has more meaning than Coke commercials or Beach Boys music. Think about it, seniors! Twelve years pushing forward and the high point of high school life is finally reached. The Balthi will help everyone to look back at this special time before the next wave takes him to a new start. Baldwin’s Purple Wave has become legendary since a rival track coach used the phrase to describe a mass of Baldwin runners pour- ing over a hill. Today the phrase “Purple Wave” refers specifically to Dave Flick, Baldwin’s champion of school spirit, who psyches loyal Baldwin fans — the real Purple Wave. Catch the Wave, and catch school spirit! 3 4 5 Everyone finds it difficult to believe that his fondest memories of high school will have been the very things he mocked at the time. Everyone will remember those substitutes who liked to yell and point their fingers, the cafeteria food identifiable only by the can from which it came. No one can forget those tiny lockers dwarfed even by the locks, the countless pep assemblies, or the crowded halls. These ex- periences are classics — they should bring a few laughs, some warm memories, and perhaps a tear to the eye in future years. 6 7 10 11 12 Baldwin graduates have shared so many unique experiences that there are bound to be great memories. Who could forget Mrs. Hrutkay’s “Good morning!” and Mr. Banky’s “Thank you for a nice day”? The Purbalite’s novel announcements prompted quite a few chuckles from the students. How many times has there been a mad rush to guidance or to the nurse? “Do you have a hall pass?” was the S20 question. And who hasn’t wondered why the new track is red instead of purple? How many people have slept in or had car trou- ble, but had Mom or Dad write a “Name is late to- day because he was ill” excuse to get one of Mrs. Horbiak’s magic green late passes marked “ex- cused”? And anyone can recite the Pledge of Allegiance, but how many students, and even teachers, pretend it’s a Federal Express commercial? Everyone shares many facets of the daily school ritual and these provide each student with rich ex- periences he will take with him forever. 14 Prayer for the Frazzled Student God bless the frazzled students be they near or far For they are the ones who burn the midnight oil to hear “that’s a job well done.” In search of recognition, they plow through pages of notes, an abundance of books, and a plethora of papers. They dedicate their lives to the holy quest for the almighty A. And what do they receive for this special devotion? Only headaches, ulcers, and red, bleary eyes. Suffering means nothing; they are numb to pain — For they seek the goal that few will attain. So be kind to frazzled students, and remember them in your prayers. Perhaps words of comfort may console them, but do not talk for too long — there is probably a paper due. They’re the most visible peo- ple in the school: captains, editors, and leaders. Seniors approach their final year hoping for a fun, wonderful time. The senior year, however, consists of an intensity all its own. Everything goes by too quickly. College and job applications cause pressure and anxiety. That’s not to say that the senior year isn’t fun. It’s the little things that make it so special. Driving into the student parking lot — legally, covering your driver’s license with a friend’s senior picture, having a graduate turn your ring around, agoniz- ing over a Prom dress or tuxedo, deciding how your name should read on your diploma: these moments contain an indescribable magic. One must also remember the depressing aspects: hav- ing to grow up, face the real world, and saying goodbye to your best friend. All of this merges to make the senior year an unforgettable experience. Seniors 35 D. Duplay completes an assignment. Carol Jones Tammy Jones Jennifer S. Zoldos As a class we have always proven ourselves to be especially in- novative and spirited. Our excellence surfaced long before we became seniors. As sophomores we played a major role in the rebirth of the Purple Wave, and last year, as juniors, we again proved our prominence by winning the Christmas decorating contest. This year, continuing to work together, we have started many new traditions. The creation of our class T-shirts and Senior Day program, for example, have laid foundations upon which future classes can build and expand. We did not hesitate to make changes in order to make our year more enjoyable. Consequently, I have only the highest expectations for members of the Class of 1987. We have excelled in high school and should continue to do so in later life. If we continue to display the qualities seen during high school, we can attain our highest goals. We have definitely left a mark on Baldwin, and I think I can safely say that the Class of 1987 has been one of the best classes Baldwin has seen in a while. Too many people to name have con- tributed to our success, but I would especially like to thank the administration, our sponsors, Mr. Hochberg and Mrs. Laszewski, as well as the other officers, Angie Joint, Vice-President, Debbie Ivey, Secretary, and Dave Flick, Treasurer, for their help in mak- ing the 1986-87 school year so memorable. I wish each of you the best of luck — the future is what you make of it! The Baldwin Highlanders changed their outlook com- pletely on the game of football during the 1986 season. The new coach, Vince DelGreco, began practice with a two-week sleep-over camp at the stadium, held to familiarize the team with its new coach. New passing maneuvers were among techniques introduced by DelGreco. Although the Highlanders’ 0-10 record disappointed both players and fans, team members say they never lost spirit. Senior Quarterback Chris Delposen said, “We treated every game as the most important. We never gave up.” 60 Sports COACHES ftdStaSffi !£ SKEE0”'- j M ™'“ «-M N—.«.M . Many G,„„. Peretin, D. Mattei, Mr. George Mazur, R. Lutz, G. Thomas, S. Purcell, D. Layman, L. Willig, S. Brennen, S. Woolney. This year’s Highlander basketball team main- tained a remarkable record. The Highlanders lost senior Joe Peretin to an injury for an extended period and senior Doug Layman to a permanent move to South Carolina. Despite this adversity, the team defeated many opponents, including Keystone Oaks, North Catholic, and Upper St. Clair. All players have shined brightly this season. Seniors “Chip” Mattei and Mark Boris each tallied 18 points, and, with help from Senior Ron Lutz, led the Highlanders to victory over Keystone Oaks (71-57). The team then proceeded to conquer North Catholic (84-67) with clutch scoring by Senior Matt Nagy in the fourth quarter. The team played an excellent game; an astounding 60 per cent of the shooting was done from the perimeter. The Highlanders thwarted Upper St. Clair’s eight-game winning streak, even without the home court advantage, the Highlanders claimed a vic- tory (73-63). Seniors Mark and John Boris com- bined for 38 points in this triumphant endeavor. This year’s basketball team aimed for the best, maintaining clear, strong goals. Hopefully, this de- mand for excellence will continue to be upheld by future teams. The golf team had a disappointing season this year finishing with a 2-5 record. However, the team was in contention every match with the final result being decided on the last hole. The bright spot on the team this year was Senior Capt. Doug Layman. Doug’s strong, consistent play led him to compete in the three major tournaments held by the W.P.I.A.L. Doug leaves as a three-year letterman and with a career record of only two defeats. Two newcomers joined the team this season, Seniors Rich Sentner and Troy Webb. Both played well and moved their way up to the 4th and 2nd posi- tions on the team, respectively. The team built a strong foundation for upcoming seasons with Freshman Ray Glacicki and sophomore Mario Wortten. Baldwin has two fine women golfers in Beth Parham and Heather Sumansky, who will greatly contribute to the team’s success next season. Other outstanding members included junior John Mainarich, as well as sophomore Walt Hasis. The team finished with eleven wins and three losses in the regular season, and it also won the Central Catholic Invitational, a major cross country meet in Western Pennsylvania. The team has many young members who hope to continue the tradition with another excellent season in 1987. 78 Sports WOmEN’S CROSS COUNTRY 1st Row: A. Mancini, D. Marinelli, S. McNulty, L. Senior Lynn Chesney led the team through a season of five wins and seven losses. Although the team was plagued by injuries, enough girls lined up to prevent forfeitures by each race time. The highlight of the season was the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League qualifiers, where Lynn Chesney advanced to compete as an individual contestant in the W.P.I.A.L. finals. With a respectable season, the girls showed spirit and sportsmanship at all times. The returning team members will keep the spirit alive and strive for a win- ning season in 1987. Despite a mid-season slump, the team bounced back, beating Seton- LaSalle and Mt. Lebanon. Although defeated by Erie Prep, the team beat Erie McDowell while on its annual Erie trip. Much credit for this year’s performance goes to Jason Byers for his improved goal-tending. Confirming Baldwin’s talent was the selection of five members to the all-star team: Seniors Ken Reed, Ken Sharrer, and Mike Kovach and Juniors Dave Koval and Jason Byers. The Highlander hockey team has earned a place in the spotlight for its great talent and outstanding performance. VOLLEYBALL C. Long — Determination makes a champion. Up — Over — Score! This year’s women’s volleyball team continued Baldwin’s win- ning tradition in women’s athletics. The junior varsity team lost only two matches and the varsity was undefeated in section play under returning head coach, Paul Hindes. In ad- dition to the section games, the girls played in four tournaments at Trinity, North Allegheny Ambridge, and Penn Hills. They placed third at North Allegheny and finished first at both Trini- ty and Penn Hills. After the Penn Hills tournament, the var- sity team ranked first in the Western Pennsylvania In- terscholastic Athletic League. The girls proved that they deserved this ranking by win- ning the W.P.I.A.L. champion- ship. They then advanced to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association semifinals, held at Indiana University. The girls retained their status as one of the leading volleyball teams in the state. Both the junior varsity and varsity teams look forward to another great year in 1987. 82 Sports JUNIOR VARSITY VOLLEYBALL 1st Row: C. Wuchenich, H. Boshelle, A. Mirt, D. Nagy, A. Ruce, M. The Baldwin Highlander wrestling team, despite all its hard work had a discouraging season. The team is in a highly competitive section; therefore, it had a difficult time with traditionally powerful rivals, such as Mt. Lebanon and Bethel Park. Additionally, Keystone Oaks had become this year’s leader in wrestling. Although each wrestler had both highs and lows this year, the true problem seemed to be an inability to pull it all together. Several matches were lost by only a few points. Next year’s members hope to achieve that sense of unity vital to a winning team and look forward to a great season in the coming year. This year, the Balthi has represented some of our largest frustrations, but also our greatest happiness. We’ve come a long way since the crazy times at the Seven Springs’ Seminar. It seems as though we were just in the planning stages, but now we’re really done. There are certain staff members who deserve some special recognition. First and foremost, Mike Clarke — our right hand man, without you, there would be no yearbook. You’re the best! Nancy Lytle — more than just Student Life and Seniors, you deserve more recognition than we can ever give. Chris Handa — by the second semester, you yield- ed to the benevolent dictatorship of Balthi, and quite well, we might add, proving your dedication with hard work. Brenda May — the Junior section was never done so quickly (or so well). Lori Shontz and Ed Urbansky — now stop bickering about style rule infrac- tions. Seriously, though, you are the best two copy editors imaginable. Denise and Kelly Zoldos and Meg Moats — thanks for always being here and for all the moral support. Larry Scott — you’re the greatest; we’re glad to see that you learned to crop correctly! Iris Bornmann, Wendy Wenerstrom, Mike Mann, and Melanie Wuchenich — thanks for working on the Freshman section. To Michelle Handa, Krista Holtz, and Sara Oswalt — “Do it on a Quad-pack.” Nineteen ninety will be your year. Mary Kay Terrari, Wendy Lu- ty, Amy Zapeline — thanks for all your hard work and dedication. And to our photographers, Jenny and Mike Zbozny, Meg Moats, Marc Spear, and Mike Chasky — a special appreciation for all the necessary last-minute rolls of film. Thanks to Laura and Karen McMahan for their long hours and hard work. To all the people who graciously donated their personal pictures to our book, we are forever grateful. And to the many whom we have not men- tioned — we thank you so very much for your con- tribution to the 1987 Balthi. Most of all, we must thank our sponsors, Mr. Robert Bayer and Mrs. Marian Powney, for all their help, patience, and understanding. This year, a lot of patience was certainly required. Overall, however, it has been a fabulous year, and we could not have asked for a better staff. We really pro- gressed. We made a lot of changes; and we’ve final- ly finished with a pretty good book. Thank you all again so much! Good luck to the Balthi staff of 1988! Your editors, Amy Salamey and Keith Eklund Another Balthi picture? Activities 139 PURBRLITE STAFF 1st Row: M. Moats, W. Have you noticed the impossible finally happened? Yes, Friday, January 16 was the first Friday pizza was not served in the cafeteria this year. Could we come a little closer to creating a secret police system? Happy 100th anniversary of the Constitution to you too, Ed. Have you noticed, when you drink milk from a carton, whether you are a right — or left-handed drinker? That is to say, do you put your nose on the right or left side of the raised lip? They say one can tell a person’s political tendencies by the way he drinks his milk: right-sided, conservative, left-sided, liberal, in the center, no preference. One major annual activity was the TI weekend. Held in early November, it enabled a few selected students to meet with TI members from different schools. Senior Dave Flick was chosen to be the Student Coordinator, and Mr. Rentier was an adult advisor. Also planned was the Teen Action Day at Cen- tury III Mall in late January, where many TI groups gathered to distribute information about drugs and alcohol. Officers were Michael Chasky, President; Kristen O’Neill, Vice President; Brooke Smokelin, Secretary; and Dave Flick, Treasurer. The members of Baldwin’s Drama Club have actively exhibited their talents throughout the year, not only in the school, but also in the com- munity. In October, the club helped the Cloverleaf YMCA to raise funds by participating in their annual Haunted House. One of the Drama Club’s major activities was its part in Bells are Ringing, this year’s musical. Baldwin’s thespians also presented their own production, Room and Bored this past spring. Each year the Allegheny Intermediate Unit sponsors a variety of apprenticeship programs to acquaint students with fields not normally covered in high school. Students gain familiarity and hands-on experience in diverse areas, such as animal behavior, aquatic and marine biology, ar- chaeology, architecture, astronomy, choreography, com- mercial art, conducting music, dance, film-making, geology and earth sciences, international social science, meteorology, poetry, still photography, theater, vertebrate paleontology, and veterinary science. To qualify for the program, students must write a small essay and obtain a teacher recommendation. Those who are selected meet once a month for specialized instruction from experts in their respective fields. These students go on field trips and engage in other activities that allow them to gain valuable insights into career options. Students who attend Junior Achievement form their own companies, controlling all aspects of industry, including production, marketing, and administration. Members pur- chase stock and receive wages and dividends. The most suc- cessful companies compete for awards at higher levels. In 1986 two students won District Achiever Awards: Tina Glaser, Top Selection “Vice President of Marketing” District, and Carol Wiedder, Top Selection “Vice President of Finance” District. Junior Achievement strives to provide students with knowledge and experience of the business world. Approx- imately fifty Baldwin students participated in a variety of programs. 1st Row: B. O’Kain. AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS Bells Rre Ringing M. Jones and K. Montgomery M. Turina and J. Schirra Baldwin’s 12th musical, Bells Are Ringing, was presented March 19, 20, and 21. Starring Senior Kathy Mont- gomery as Ella, a telephone operator, the plot centered around Susan’s phone Answering Service and its customers. Ella displeased her cousin, Sue (Jacqui Schirra), by meddling in the business of her subscribers: Dr. Kitchell (Dan Mur- tha), Blake Barton (Mike Clarke), Larry Hastings (Mike Stefanac), and even fall- ing in love with Jeff Moss (Mike Jones). The situation is complicated by a bookie, Sandor (Marc Turina), and the bungling investigators — Inspector Barnes (Mike Chasky) and Francis (Nick Dolgos). Enhanced by the dancers, chorus, pit orchestra, art crew, and stage crew, this production was a time-consuming but fun-filled effort. A tender moment in Bells Are Ringing. 218 Supplement K. Speakers were Senior Class President Tina Glaser; Valedic- torians Tina Glaser, Jennifer Johns, and Kelly Verba; Salutatorian Denise Dupaly; and Student Council President Bill DelGreco. Supplement 239 Friendship and memories A Celebration of Friendship By not injustice or injury, Let these bonds of friendship be severed. Make them endure. With hope, let each man cast aside his differences So that this comradeship, Of late grown frail by indifference, Might be renewed and restored. Let this final year symbolize not the end of this era, But its increased maturity and strength through time. Let each man nurture these ties till Age refines into truest fellowship Unsurpassed. In ever nearer future, Let no boundary divide, No expanse separate — We are as one. For, in adversity, If we not hold on to what is got, Then what seemed friendship was likely naught. “It was the best of times... It was the epoch of belief... ” More than allow it remain; demand it sustain. — Edward T. Urbansky In fflemoriam Julie Ann Finotti May, 1985 The Class of 1987 was sad- dened by the loss of Julie Ann Finotti. Together, the Balthi and the entire student body mourn for Julie whose activities centered around her position as the regional president of the Future Business Leaders of America. We will remember Julie for her friendly personality and kindness, and we will miss her. The Balthi staff and the stu- dent body of Baldwin High School join to mourn the loss of Michael K. Clarke, who was, along with all of his other ac- tivities, the Activities Editor of the Balthi. We will all remember Michael as we knew him — a pleasant, sweet, helpful, and bright young man — and we will all miss him. Michael K. Clarke 240 Supplement
