We all came to Baldwin separatel} ' and with many and JL J J f ( ir: w diverse interests. Some of us sought academic excellence, others athletic superiority: others strove for artistic achieve- ment. Yet, here we were drawn together and worked for one goal, the glory of the Purple and White. Each of us contributed to every facet of school life. If we were not in the class plays, we applauded; and if we did not partic- ipate in athletics, we cheered. Thgugh we have gone, our spirit, achievements, and the motivktion that Baldwin instilled in us remain for future classes. Most of the activities that we have participated in together are recorded in this, the 1963 Balthi. 3 -S. O , Faculty 3 ,yV - .!W .oa£: Seniors Classes 6 flV 44- p. Superintendent Administration To The Class of 1963, Those of us engaged in education have a rare priv- ilege. We are in the position of working closely with our nation ' s greatest resource, its future citizens. You, the members of the Class of 1963 of Baldwin High School, are a large segment of that resource. Because each of you will be expected by your fellow citizens to make some contribution to the total welfare of all we hope you are now prepared for the next step and eligible to represent Baldwin High School as one of its graduates. Do you know that your education has only begun? Many of you may terminate your formal schooling at this point but all of you had better be planning to go on learning at every opportunity. Have you set a goal for your life? Is it one that not only challenges the best that is in you but one which also fills you with pride and spurs you on toward its realization? All of the knowledge that you have gained through your many years of study must be put to work toward some worthy end or it is as nothing. My challenge to you, then, is to go on learning and striving toward a goal that is worthy of your heritage — your family, your school, your friends. But, most of all, to thine own self be true. Dr. W. Robert Paynter, Superintendent BOARD OF DIRECTORS— 5;mi£ ;i.s, ' ; Edwin W. Elliott, Fred E. Barron. William B. Cullen, Andrew W. Kovacs. John E. Bush, Richard D. SnoutTer. Seated: Stanley A. Jarecki. Secretary: Katherine K. Stone. Edward X. Hallenberg. President; Clifford M. Sweitzer. Vice-President; Edward R. Lawrence, Solicitor. YOU AND OPPORTUNITIES You live in a marvelous age of opportunity. Twelve years of public education is provided. A college edu- cation is available for persons who have the desire and an ability of average or above. In addition to the formal educational opportunities, a lifetime of learning is pos- sible by listening to other people, reading many pub- lications, viewing visual mass media, and various other means. It has been written that many young people today assume the world owes them a livi ng. Whether or not this attitude is prevalent is without substantial proof. All evidence points to more and better opportunities for the person who prepares well, who is a never end- ing learner, and who will give just a little extra in his chosen job. The typical employee is said to be inter- ested only in fewer hours, large financial rewards, and quick promotions. The more important considerations involve job satisfaction, service to benefit others, and an opportunity to advance to one ' s highest expectations. Opportunities will always exist for persons who pre- pare, who give that little extra in effort, and who re- late to worthy purposes. What will you do with your present and future opportunities? C. This year, Baldwin ' s football team showed its com- petitors that the class of ' 63 really meant business. Mount Lebanon, our constant rival, formerly unbeaten by Baldwin, went down to defeat at the hands of the Highlanders. In the last moments of the game, our Highlanders broke a 20-20 tie by successfully complet- ing a pass, upsetting Mount Lebanon 26-20. Bethel also fell for the eleventh year in a row and the Highlanders went on to a 5-4 season. Our team showed strength, ability, and sportsman- ship while continually scoring for B. H. S. Long will they be remembered and topping their record will be the goal of future teams. The victories over Mt. Lebanon and other outstand- ing challengers including Munhall, Bethel, and Can- non McMillan were some of the many fine perform- ances that made the team of ' 63 unforgettable. The following seniors. Herb Hawkins, John Schmidt, Andy Tomko, Bob McMahon, and Denny Reilly, were given awards by the W.P.LA.L. Western Conference All-Star Team. BaUle of the gridiron. Back Roir; Mr. Keller, H. Reese, S. With Mr. Meell and Mr. Karpa showing them how, the boys chalked up a memorable record of seven wins and three losses. Rich Lehman and John Berseth were the two outstanding runners of the season. Their superior performances enabled them to take part in the State Championships, where they represented our school in an excellent manner. Once the team got going, it performed excellently. Under the painstaking guidance of Mr. Matthews and Mr. DiGiulio, the wrestlers went on to tie North Hills and win six more matches in a row. Perhaps the most outstanding member of the squad was Bill Niro, who remained undefeated for the season. Other top wrestlers were Ed Stasik and Dick Hughey.
