T H E I960 BAI TH I BALDWIN HIGH SCHOOL PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA w ■— ■■¥1 i 1 ■«••■¥ ■! foreword Let's Go Forward Together, the theme of the class of '60, is also the record of our years at Baldwin. Our exciting history together has been a whirl of classes, dances, pep rallies, football games, report cards, senior pictures, and climaxed by gradua- tion. We pause now to record this history before we go forward together into our new role, the role of alumni of Baldwin High School. FACULTY Those who educate children well are more to be honored than even their parents, for these only give them life, those the art of living well. —Aristotle I )  11 1 Sir J ( I ( s Teat In Board of Directors: Bottom Row: Stanley A. Jarecki, Secretary; Katherine K. Stone; Ernest C. Ott, President; Edward X Hallenberg Vice President; Edward R. Lawrence, Solicitor. Back Row: Richard D. Snouffer; William B. Cullen; Don E. Vierling; Clifford M. Sweitzer! ADMINISTRATION W. Robert Paynter Board of Directors The duties of the seven member school board which controls the Baldwin-Whitehall School Districts' educational system are man- aging supplies, preparing the budget, regu- lating salaries, and hiring teachers. This year Mr. Ernest Ott is serving as the president of the board. The school board meets regularly once a month and has many special committee meetings beside this. As the school year closes, we wish to thank them for their guid- ance. Supervising Principal For the past nine years. Dr. W. Robert Paynter has been the Supervising Principal of the Baldwin-Whitehall School District. From hearing him speak to us at various occasions, we know that he is a man devoted to his job and to us, as students. Dr. Paynter is a grad- uate of Pennsylvania State University and of the University of Pittsburgh where he received his Master of Education and Doctorate de- grees. 8 Principal, C. Paul Clark Mr. C. Paul Clark received his B.S. degree at Indiana State Teachers College and his M.Ed. degree at the University of Pittsburgh. Although he has been with us a relatively short time, he has won the admira- tion and respect of everyone who has been fortunate enough to meet him. Mr. Clark has the innate ability of conveying to the students that he is their friend and that he can be approached for counsel or advice. We sincerely hope that he will be with Baldwin students for many years to come. Administrative Assistants Dr. Warren Shepler, Director of In- struction, is responsible for the direction and coordination of our instructional program. He directs the employment of all instructional personnel and evaluates each member of the instructional staff. Mr. Wilbert C. Brandtonies, as the Di- rector of Administrative Services, is in charge of directing the non-instructional personnel. He is an assistant to the su- pervising principal. Dr. Paynter, and is responsible for the purchase of school supplies and equipment. Mr. J. Ernest Harrison, the Director of Curriculum, prepares programs for the planning and improvement of curricu- lum, and through research, he studies and evaluates various methods of im- proving education. Dr. Shepler, Mr. Brandtonies, Mr. Harrison Mrs. Bartlett Dr. Zingle ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS Mr. McGibbeny Stanley A. Zingle We were all happy to be associated with Dr. Stanley A. Zingle. It was a pleasure to see him at our school activities and his kind, generous attitude will long be remembered. Dr. Zingle graduated from California State Teachers College and re- ceived his Doctorate and Master of Education de- grees from the University of Pittsburgh. Elmer J. McGibbeny A familiar face around the halls was that of Mr. Elmer J. McGibbeny. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, with a Master of Education degree. One of his many duties was the efficient direction of the school buses. We only wished that he would have put his coat on when he went out to direct them through the snow! Mrs. Enlow, C. Books are keys; use them wisely, treat them well and they will serve faith- fully. OFFICERS: Seated: Carol Feick, Secretary; Richard Knight, President. Standing: Douglas Rauch, Treasurer; Robin Metz, Vice President. SENIOR CLASS Class Colors Class Flower Class Motto Royal Blue and White White Carnation Let's go forward together. As we look back on the past year, we, as sen- iors, leave behind many happy memories: the excitement of Senior Recognition Night, the joy- ous atmosphere of the Christmas dance, the tedi- ous but necessary job of selling Christmas cards, the success of our Senior Class Play, the tears and smiles on Class Day, and our wonderful Prom. But there were times of sadness, too. There was a realization that we would soon be leaving the friends we had known and loved. We realized the seriousness of the responsibilities which lay ahead as we prepared for graduation. On commencement night, it was with a mix- ture of sadness and hopeful expectation that we said good-by to Baldwin, knowing that the year 1960 would remain a permanent part of our memory. The juniors had many wonderful events to put away in their memories. The biggest event was the distribution of the long awaited class rings. Now just one more year to go! The Junior Class Play, Gramercy Ghost, left the class with the feeling of pride and accomplishment in a job well done. Under the supervision of their spon- sor, Mr. Bartos, the juniors had a very success- ful and enjoyable class party. New doors were opened for us by the fascinating courses of biology, typing, and many different languages. Under the able supervi- sion of Mr. Banky, our class sponsor, we elected our first class officers. We ordered our class rings this year, and are looking forward eagerly to next year when we'll receive them. Our class party was the crowning touch for a successful sophomore year. 84 Mr. Banky, Class Sponsor SOPHOMORES Barbara Abraham Linda Abramson David Ackerman Gary Alberts Janice Allison Linda Allison Sara Altenhof Janice Appel Leslie Arch Lloyd Arch Carol Armstrong Michael Atherton Juel Backstrom Judy Ann Baker Susan Barbin Howard Barlow James Barone James Baughman Thomas Beck Roy Beck Ralph Beerbower Pa'ricia Benevento William Bennett Karla Bentzen Patricia Berents Wesley Berger James Bernarding Joseph Beyer Charles Bieri Carolyn Bird William Bissell Linda Bixler Jean Blaney Judith Bliss Robert Bliss Karen Blohme Charles Blosel James Boffey Barbara Bogucki Donna Lee Bomer Martin Bonomi Shirley Born Mary Lou Bradel Peter Broeren William Bromley Carole Brown Christine Brown Fred Brown Robert Brutico Carol Buhr Thomas Burke Karen Bush Robert Bushman John Calabro Charles Cardani Eleanor Carlsen Colleen Carney Roseanne Carroll Donna Casciani Carol Chambers 85 SOPHOMORES Ronald Chesnos Thomas Chikes Thomas Chorba Robert Christensen Ralph Churchill Carol Citro Robert Claire Victoria Clark Charlotte Close David Cochran Lorraine Cofsky Martha Colesberry Thomas Connors James Cook Linda Cooper Wayne Covert Charles Covey Faith Creasey Patricia Crosby Linda Crouch Betty Crowley Mary Alice Crowley David Daffern Cheryl Dalrymple Roy Dalzell Joyce Daugherty Jean Davidson Nancy DeBattista Loretta Del Percio Robert DeMare LaDorna De Paul Nancy Depp Ronald Detillo Charles Dick Stanley Dinert James Donahue Joyce Doyak Marlene Dragar Judith Dryer Frederick Dunihue Catherine East Marjorie Ebken Suann Edwards David Elliott Sandra Erbe Linda Eroline John Ersher John Erskine Thomas Fahrner Nicholas Falgione John Farar Philip Fassett Nancy Fee Anne Mae Feenan Virginia Fellner Jacqueline Ferris Barbara Fettis Helen Finnegan John Fischer Michael Fisher 86 G. This was due mainly to the inclusion of many new activities designed to meet the needs of the frosh. In so doing, the freshmen solidified themselves and became part of that well- oiled machinery which produces that famous Baldwin spirit. The class party climaxed the year with a challenge to bring Baldwin greater things in the fu- ture. Under the guidance of Miss Kirkland, Mr. Michael, and Mr. McCormick, the editors and staff members worked hard and enthusiastically to publish one of Baldwin's finest annuals. The work began in the previous school year with the selection of the editors. The edi- torial staff spent part of the summer plan- ning and arranging the layout of the book, so that the actual work of taking, identify- ing, and naming pictures was able to begin early in the school year. The Balthi strived to give the class of '60 a yearbook long to be remembered. 100 EDITORIAL STAFF Co-editors News Editor Features Editor Sports Editor Publicity Editor Head Typists Photography Editor Pat Robinson Don Mitchell Carol Feick Joy Utley Richard Frye Diane Dickerson Barbara Rautner Mitzi Milanovich John Rhoads This year's PURBALITE made its debut with a new look. For the first time, it was a completely independent newspaper, printed under the guidance of Mr. Robbins and the boys in the print shop. One of the excellent features of this year's PURBALITE was an abundance of pictures. Co-editors, Don Mitchell and Pat Robinson, expanded the scope of the paper to include not only stories concerning the school, but those of interest to the community. Each homeroom elects a rep- resentative and an alternate to present its suggestions concerning matters of in- terest to our school and its students. In addition to its regular business, the Sen- ate published the annual handbook, THE HIGHLANDER. The Student Senate sponsored buses to the away football games, which pro- moted school spirit. After Friday night home basketball games, the students danced to the music of the Bel-Aires at the Basket Ball, sponsored by the Senate. This year, instead of making two sep- arate collections, the Student Senate made one big money collection, giving part of it to the United Fund and the other part to the March of Dimes. The big accomplishment of the year was the successful completion of raising the necessary funds to sponsor a foreign exchange student for next year. Baldwin also participated in a very successful school exchange program with several of the schools in this area. Student Senate Officers: C. Feick, R. Frye, N. Rauch, R. Cutler, M. The standards of this club were high because membership was open only to those students who received at least two A's in ma- jor subjects and no less than B's in all others. Along with outstanding scholastic qualities. this organization required its members to be- long to at least two extra-curricular activities at Baldwin. Mr. Jesko was the very capable sponsor who checked every member's report card at the end of each nine-week period. The membership cards which were distributed represented high scholastic achievement. PROFOUND INTEREST IN SCIENCE SCIENCE CLUB BIOLOGY CLUB Under the sponsorship of Mr. Bartos, the science club spent many hours conducting ex- periments, viewing filmstrips, and studying physical phenomena. The highlight of the year was the planning and conducting of the school's science fair from which fifteen out- standing projects were chosen to be entered in the fair at Buhl Planetarium. The Biology Club, directed by Mrs. Gibbon, was of primary interest to those students who were planning careers in medicine or biology. At their meetings the members viewed films, made blood tests, and conducted other experi- ments and dissections. Through several field trips, the members advanced their knowledge and gained a greater understanding of this field of science. 104 Chemistry Club: Bottom Row: G. Peat, J. Varner, N. Brown, M. This club met after school where they conducted experiments and tests and viewed demonstrations. The group also took several field trips in order to gain on-the-spot knowledge about this phase of science. This small group's purpose was to solve various mathematical problems, while under the competent leadership of Mr. Wagner. The meetings were held twice a month on Wednes- days after school, and were attended mainly by Senior Academic Math students. These stu- dents, through participation in the club, broad- ened their mathematical knowledge through this beyond-the-classroom experience. FURTHERING ACADEMIC KNOWLEDGE Math Club: Bottom Row: D. Sponsored by Mr. Trujillo, the club pro- vided the members with knowledge about the culture, historical background, and the way of life in the Spanish speaking countries of the world. One of the projects accomplished by the members was making pinatas at Christ- mas. The Latin Club, comprised of first and sec- ond year Latin students, became better ac- quainted with the customs, as well as the lan- guage of the ancient Romans through projects, skits, and other activities. DEBATE CLUB This year's club was ably guided by Mr. Butler, head of the speech division, and Mr. Klein, head of the debate division. It gave practical experience and self-confidence to all its members by encouraging interscholastic competition during the school year. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA Due to the large membership, the Future Teachers of America was divided into two groups this year. The Betkins Chapters, sen- iors, was under the able direction of Mrs. Jen- kins. The juniors were directed by Mrs. Daley. FTA members assisted the teachers and used every opportunity to learn more about their chosen profession. In observance of National Education week. they distributed an apple to each teacher in the district through the courtesy of the B. P.- E. A. A bake sale, card party and fashion show were held to raise money for the scholar- ship fund. Members were given the oppor- tunity to observe a class and assume the teach- ing responsibilities of that class for a day. Ac- tivities for the year ended with the annual club banquet. These service pro- jects were on the international, national, com- munity, and school levels. Through their con- tinued work, the girls learned to give freely of their time to benefit and bring pleasure to others. RED CROSS HELP OTHERS At their meetings the details of the various activities were carefully planned, and commit- tees were set up to see that the projects ran smoothly and that they were carried out with efficiency. This year their programs consisted of filling Christmas stockings for underprivil- eged children and giving a variety show at the Veteran's Hospital. 109 Key Club: Bottom Row: R. The Key Club pro- vided service to the school by distributing supplies to the homerooms each month and collecting books at the end of the year. Last summer at the International Key Club Convention, Baldwin's club was awarded a Merit Certificate for its out- standing contributions in service to the com- munity. One of their main projects this year was the support of a foreign orphan. A car wash in the fall and their annual dance in the spring rounded out their program for the year. Through their various projects this club provided many services to the school and the community. M. Elliott, R. Bloomstead, P. Ignatius Our Delivery Boys! 110 Hi-Y: Bottom Row: D. Rauch, L. Vari, D. For various holidays the boys collected food and clothing for needy families. In addition to their service projects, they also managed to turn out a winning bas- ketball team. OUR SPORTS LETTERMEN The goal of every athletically minded stu- dent was the Varsity Lettermen Club, spon- sored by Mr. Crevar. To qualify as a letter- man, a boy must have earned, by hard work and athletic ability, a letter in a sport. A mem- orable event of the year was the Faculty- Lettermen basketball game which was played to raise money for their various activities. These boys were rightfully dubbed as out- standing sportsmen. A great deal of rivalry was seen in the gym on Wednesday evenings when the Lead- ers Club sponsored girls intramurals. The members, comprised of sixty-five senior girls, helped in the organization of teams and acted as coaches, referees, and scorekeepers during the games. Each girl also gave up one study hall a week to aid the gym teachers in class. Here they took roll and helped instruct vari- ous fundamentals of physical education. In doing these things they learned responsibility and leadership. M. Brovet, D. Sherman, D. Bayan, Y. Burnett. Donna and Yvonne watch as Melanie and Dee practice one of the folk dances. SERVICE IS THEIR MOTTO Y-TEENS The Y-Teens, a branch of the Y.W.C.A., were divided into three groups: the sopho- more group, led by Mrs. Enlow; and the junior and senior groups guided by Mrs. Fox. The membership was composed of girls who gave of their time freely to assist in service to others. They also gave a little of themselves in every- thing they did. The meetings were held on afternoons following school, and many groups frequently found themselves in the midst of a service project. Although they were quite busy with these projects, they still found time for fun at bowling and roller-skating parties. The year was brought to a climax by the spring formal which is sponsored by these energetic workers every year. R. Brown, H. DePhillips Rosemary and Helen sold many Herbie Dogs and Baldwin High lander pencils to raise money for Y-Teens. 113 Girls Pep Club: Bottom Row: V. Herrick, J. Rockenbach, M. Malone, M. Schultz, M. These girls displayed their abundant store of energy at the various ath- letic events, and were readily spotted in their white pep club sweaters. The highlight of the year was Senior Recognition Night when a pep queen and two attendants were crowned. These girls proved themselves wor- thy assets when it came to cheering the team on to victory. The Boys Pep Club was sponsored by Mr. Bruni and could be distinguished in the stands by their purple beanies. Planning Senior Recognition was a difficult job, but the boys managed to complete it successfully. These boys were greatly appreciated at the various athletic events and certainly did their share to promote school spirit. Boys Pep Club: Bottom Row: W. Cullison, D. Moggs, R. Day, D. Ludwig, J. Besides these tasks, the members of the Concessions Club worked in the stadium during the after- noon of the game chipping ice, setting up the trailers, and unloading the pop cases. Their work enabled the spectators to more fully en- joy the game. A NECESSARY PART OF THE GAME Pep Queen and Attendants: M. Wellener, B. Sill, B. Wolber. FUTURE BUSINESS UEADERS OF AMERICA BALDWIN S FUTURE SECRETARIES A new club made its appearance at Bald- win this year, the Conwin, chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America. Spon- sored by Miss Conte, this club consisted of twenty-two members. Qualifications for mem- bership were good grades in all subjects, spe- cifically business subjects, and a sincere inter- est in working in the business world in the future. The club accomplished such things as typ- ing the ninth grade newspaper, becoming ac- quainted with business machines, and learn- ing about specific careers in the business field. B. Corbett Remember—Keep your eyes on the copy! 116 SECRETARIAL CLERICAL CLUB SERVICE CLUB The Clerical Club extends to all of its mem- bers practice and experience that will help them in their chosen vocations during future years in the business world. Each member served as a personal secretary to each of the teachers and did all their necessary mimeo- graphing and typing. Mrs. Reinhardt success- fully guided the club this year. One of the most hard-working clubs at Baldwin was the Secretarial Service Club, sponsored by Mrs. Magness. The club had two very worthwhile purposes. The first was to give the members experience for future office work and the second was to provide each teacher with his own secretary to type, mimeograph, and do his other secretarial work. The erection of scenery and backdrops were a few of the jobs done at the Christmas and Easter Programs, the class plays, and the band and choral concerts. SOUND SQUAD The main purpose of the sound squad was to aid our classroom learning through interest- ing audio and visual aids. These films made lessons more meaningful and increased com- prehension. These boys were under the ca- pable guidance of Mr. Waterman. The club proved to be of great benefit to both teachers and students. 121 Highlander Hi-Lites: Bottom Row: M. Ziolkowski, L. The story con- cerned a young girl, Nancy Willard, who in- herits a ghost, a Revolutionary War deserter, Nathaniel Coombes. He is destined to re- main on the earth forever, unless he delivers a message he has hidden under a tree since the war. Because Nancy is the only one who can see him, her boyfriend, Parker Burnett, believes she is mentally ill and tries to get her committed to an institution. A young news- paper reporter, Charles Stewart, however, believes in her and together they find and de- liver the message. This removes the curse from Nathaniel, and the play ends happily for everyone. THE HIGHLANDER BAND Summer vacation was again cut short for Highlander Band members who spent many long hot hours in training sessions. The re- sult of their work was demonstrated at half- time during football season when they aston- ished us by their ability to march, dance, and play their instruments at the same time. Among the most outstanding numbers per- formed last fall were: Bill Bailey Won't You Please Come Home, The Baldwin Boogie, and Tiger Rag. On September 15, Baldwin was host to a band show in which seven area schools par- ticipated. It was a wonderful evening of en- tertainment for the audience and quite an ex- perience for band members. Among the show stoppers was an Indian dance by Dick Frye to a very unusual song called Thunderbird. The con- cert was also dotted with such favorites as Glenn Miller's American Patrol and Leroy Anderson's Forgotten Dreams. Even before the show was perfected, rehearsals in the auditorium were drawing large crowds of on- lookers. Everyone eagerly looked forward to the Spring Concert where the band added fame to fame. Wherever and whenever the band goes, all eyes are on the majorettes, the Highland- ers and Pipers. They are the symbol of our Highlander theme and add prestige to Baldwin. Band: Top Row: R. Brower HIGHLANDER CHOIR The 1959-1960 Highlander Choir, under the fine direction of Mr. Shalley, once again blended their voices to create music which de- lighted their audiences. The Choir's first appearance this year was at the Stephen Foster Memorial, and in spite of the fact that there were many new members and little time for preparation, they did an ex- cellent job. They also participated in the Thanksgiving assembly and presented a beau- tiful program of Christmas music before the holidays. Parents, teachers, and friends who came to the program joined in for the tradi- tional finale of Oh, Come All Ye Faithful. After a short rest the Choir began work- ing on their music for the Easter assembly and Spring Concert. The concert was not only good listening, but the robes were laid away to be replaced by evening gowns and white dinner jackets, and the appearance was as pleasing as the sound. This year's Highlander Choir again sur- passed itself in quality, and for the seniors of the Choir, the year ends appropriately with the words of Sir Thomas Wyatt, Now is this song both sung and past . . This was due mainly to the fact that they were given more rehearsal time. In previous years, the girls met only twice a week, and in differ- ent groups. This year, the girls were all sched- uled together for five periods a week. This improvement, plus a lot of hard work resulted in outstanding performances at the school as- semblies, Christmas Program, and the Spring Concert. The group had one hundred and seven members, and was under the able direction of Mr. Shalley, Baldwin's Choral Director. It was his task to choose the fine music that the girls sang, and to direct the rehearsals of this out- standing organization. 131 Boys Glee Club: Top Row: E. Collet, M. Capizzi, R. Lewis, T. Their musical ability was more fully developed due to daily scheduled rehearsals. The Glee Club was reduced in size, the rehearsal time being difficult for those with tight schedules. However, it drew many athletes who previous- ly had been unable to practice after school. Many members of the Glee Club are also in Highlander Choir, and their knowledge of music and musical techniques were an asset to the group. The quality of the Glee Club was improved under the direction of Mr. Shal- ley, and their participation in many assem- blies, the Christmas Program and Spring Con- cert certainly added to an evening's entertain- ment. THE FRESHMEN CHOIR The Ninth Grade Chorus, under the direc- tion of Mr. Scandrol, had a rewarding third year of existence. Much time was spent on the techniques of singing in a group, such as proper breath and tone control. Knowledge of this kind increases the musical ability of the singer and greatly improves the sound of the choir. The experience of this group will add to the quality of future senior choral groups. The choir sang in many of our assemblies, but will be remembered especially for their part in the Ninth Grade Spring Concert. D. Rouser, A. Harrison, D. Manspeaker, Mr. Scandrol The Music Department is the proud owner of this ultra- fine tape recorder. Its use as a teaching aid has un- limited possibilities as Mr. Scandrol shows to Dorothy, Ann, and Dave. 133 John, Tom, and Jim are familiar figures to those who have ever spent a Fri- day night at a football game. Their bagpipes ac- company our Highlanders, and together they represent Baldwin's theme. Pipers: J. Rhoads, T. Pastorius, J. Mcllroy. FRESHMEN BAND The Freshmen Band, under the direction of Mr. Mcllroy, was again an active member of the Music Department. Membership con- sisted of twenty-four ninth grade students who had musical ability and interest. They prac- ticed during the third period daily and the re- sults of their efforts were clearly displayed at the Thanksgiving assembly, the Mid-Year Con- cert, and the Ninth Grade Concert. The mem- bers of this organization can be justly proud of this year's progress and accomplishments. Freshman Band: Top Row: W. Moody, G. Remley, G. Berg, A. Speicher, A. Short, H. Hardy, J. ORCHESTRA This year the orchestra was again under the direction of Mr. Mcllroy. It was composed of about 45 members, including a string sec- tion and select members of the band. Rehear- sals for the complete orchestra were held after school once a week, and the string section met every day during school. The Spring Instru- mental Concert, put on by the orchestra, was a huge success. The orchestra also performed on numerous other occasions throughout the school year. Some of these were the Senior and Junior Class Plays, the Christmas pro- gram, and many of our assemblies. The per- formances of this fine instrumental group were greatly enjoyed by everyone who heard them. Mr. Shalley, B. McCrackin, W. Spence, A. Neumeyer The new Music Theory class found that, as a part of the course, they had to compose their own music. Such a project is being explained by Mr. Shalley to Barb, Wally, and Al. 135 136 SPORTS IN SIXTY The sports year at Baldwin began with the summer camp for the football team. The cross-country team also be- gan training during the last two weeks of August. The football team had a mediocre four and five season, but the cross-country team turned in a fine sea- son, closing with the state tournament at Penn State. In November, the basketball team and the wrestling team began their cam- paigns. The basketball team again ran into stiff competition in Section Six. The wrestling team had a fine season with some of the squad going to the post-sea- son wrestling tournaments. As soon as the weather cleared, the baseball team began its spring practice with high hopes of bringing the W.P.I.- A.L. title to Baldwin at the end of the term. K. Bentzen, E. McLaughlin, C. The track team began practicing out- doors in March, but they had been pre- paring for the season since late winter at the indoor track at South Park. Their practice paid off as they did very well this year. Also during the spring, the golf team had a successful season. Thus ended the sports year at Bald- win for 1960. Although we may not have had winning seasons in all the events, the boys participating learned many skills, but more important they learned sportsmanship and teamwork. E. Fiertz L. Kent, F. Brown Entanglement during practice. FOOTBALL FIGHT! HIGHLANDERS! Coaches: Mr. Gillooly, Mr. Crevar, Mr. Banky, Mr. Fritsch. The football team, coached by Al Crevar, and his assistants—James Gillooly, George Banky, and Warner Fritsch, began the season in late August with summer camp. Injuries to key players suffered during the summer session and a fine Sewickley Area team added up to a Baldwin defeat in the opening game of the season at Baldwin's stadium. Next to visit Baldwin was Langley of the City League. In sound physical shape, the Highlanders had little trouble with the Mus- tangs. Football Team: Bottom Row: L. Isabel, J. Johnson, C. Susan, R. WIN! WIN! Bethel was the next victim of the Crevar men. Baldwin's offense finally began to click, and it was too much for the Bethel team. In their fourth straight home game, the High- landers had little trouble in disposing of its tra- ditional rival, Carrick. Baldwin took to the road for the first time of the season and ran into a tough Uniontown team which proved to be too powerful. For its second straight road game, Baldwin traveled to Munhall. In the roughest game of the year, Baldwin suffered many injuries and was outlasted by a very good Munhall team. Back home again to meet West View, the Highlanders, though missing many of their regu- lars, beat the Indians with some last minute de- fense to make the game a real thriller. On Senior Recognition night the Highlanders met Mt. Lebanon. They played a tremendous first half and might have won the game except for a freak pass interception in the second half which put the game out of reach. To close out the season, Baldwin traveled to Washington. The Highlanders were leading late in the game, but the Presidents' last effort led to the winning touchdown. Although on paper the season seems to be a loss, the Highlanders provided their fans with plenty of excitement and good football, of which they can all be proud. Grabowsky A new dash of sparkle was added to halftime football entertainment this year, as the forty-eight snappy Heatherettes marched onto the field to the strains of the Highlander Band. Training began with two weeks of summer practice and con- tinued with after-school rehearsals through- out football season. The precision drill and dance routines performed by the girls re- flected their hard-working efforts. The initial appearance of the Heather- ettes was made at the band festival held in our own stadium in September and they appeared regularly at all football games. Credit for such a successful season as this should be given to Mr. Regis Shalley, the capable director and sponsor of the group. CHEERLEADERS LET'S GO!! Outfitted in purple skirts and sweat- ers which had a big white B on the front, the eleven peppy cheerleaders made an attractive picture whether on the football field or on the basketball floor. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Helen Neuhard, these girls stimulated the crowds and helped cheer our teams to victory. During the football season, the squad consisted of only seven cheerleaders. Later on in the year, however, for the basketball season, four new girls were added and trained. As winners of the 1958-59 Allegheny County Cheerleading Contest, the Bald- win cheerleaders played host to more than 30 schools for this year's competi- tion which was held in the high school gymnasium. Many new and different cheers were added as a result of the hard work of the squad. Co-Captain: Carol Feick, Captain: Karen Brower Mrs. Neuhard checks Aggie's skirt. Cheerleaders: Bottom Row: S. Under the guidance of Coach Bob Neuhard, the wrestlers compiled a fine season record and continued in their winning ways at the sectional wrestling meets at the end of the season. After a slow start, losing to the top two teams in the area. Mount Lebanon and Shaler, they went on to win more than their share of the remaining meets. Congratulations to Coach Neuhard and his fine team. They have made Baldwin a respected wrestling squad in only two short years. Center: Mr. Neuhard, A. Ranft, P. Newcomb, P. Sheridan, D. Ludwig. In their second year in Section Six, the Highlanders found winning very hard, as they lacked the height which McKeesport, Homestead, Duquesne, Clairton, and Elizabeth- Forward possessed. In the pre-season games, the Highlanders showed prom- ise of a winning season with scrappy playing and good out- side shooting. Also, in the First Annual Christmas Tournament held at Baldwin, the Highlanders beat a good South Catholic team for third place, after losing to a tough Scott Township team. But when they moved in section play, they could not cope with the height and experience of their opponents. Also adding to the troubles of the Banky-ites was the dis- missal of two key players. In track season, Baldwin again turned in many fine performances, both as a team and as individuals. Outstanding on the team of Coaches Karpa and Dick- inson, were Fiertz, Shaffer, Hitchcock, and Nanz. This year the team did very well in the regular season, and also in the invitational meets. With many lettermen returning, practice started on February first. These boys worked very hard all through the season; their success being well deserved. TRACK Spring Coaches: Fritsch—Baseball, Dickinson—Track, Karpa—Track, Mazzocco—Golf. Wolt Borto, Rich Solera, Coach Dickinson LET'S GO HIGHLANDERS In the nineteen-fifty-nine season, cross country became a very popular sport at Baldwin. In the sec- ond season as a varsity team. Coach Bob Dickinson's cross country harriers won fifth place in the district meet. This earned them the right to participate in the State Finals at Penn State. They did very well there, also, with an overall team standing in the top twenty. Although it is primarily a participant sport, cross- country gained many fans in the past year due to the fine performances of our team. CROSS COUNTRY Cross Country: Bottom Row: P. Vantine, E. Again pitted against some of the perennial baseball powers of the W.P.I.A.L., Baldwin won its share of the games. Their schedule was not completed due to the weather, but they still provided the fans with some very exciting games. With the strong pitching of Hasbach and powerful hitting by Rockenbach, Baldwin again was a contender for the W.P.I.A.L. title. GOLF Rich Cecere and Barry Huff smile over a hole-in-one. Although possibly the least known of var- sity sports at Baldwin, golf has been one of the most successful interscholastic sports in which we participate. In a section with teams such as Mount Lebanon, Centerville, Bethel, and Canonsburg, Mr. Mazzocco's boys have always been contenders. This year it seems as though they have a better chance than ever to win with many lettermen returning. Mr. Mazzocco has only one word of warning for the opposition, Fore! SINK THAT PUTT Bottom Row.
