SNOWDEN On Friday, September 5, the Highlanders opened their grid season by trouncing a Snowden eleven to the tune of 37-0 at the South Park Oval. The Purple and White took the upper hand immediately and marched to pay dirt no less than six times. Coach Eurcka's boys showed power and speed plus a promising season. BETHEL Bethel Field was the scene of the next grid battle. Two wellmatehed teams played three quar- ters of scoreless ball, but with Baldwin playing the better game. ln the final stanza, Bethel provided a needed break and the Highlander eleven promptly turned the bobble into a score. Shannon cross- the chalk with a six pointer but a try for the point was no good. The game ended with Bethel in possession of the ball, but the Purple and White on the big end of a 6-0 score. BRENTWOOD September 19 saw the game of the year when the Brentwood Spartans and the Baldwin Highlanders engaged in a Triadic tilt at Phillips Park. The game was played under the arc lights before a crowd of 7,500 spectators. The Spartans, with the bitter memory of last year's 32-I4 defeat, were out for the Baldwin scalp, and the Scotties from Baldwin were eager to make it two in a row against their old rival. During the first half the Township eleven lost many scoring chances. In the opening minutes of the fourth quarter the Blue and Gold broke Scharf loose for a tally. The con- version was wide and Brentwood led 6-0. Upon receiving the kick the Baldwin eleven went into the spreadforniation and marched down the field with Tomko finally toting the pigskin ofl' tackle for a six pointer. Using the spread again, Tomko cracked the line for the extra point and the game at 7-6. CARRICK The final game for the Triadic cup found the Purple and VVhite eleven battling it out down to the wire against the Blue and Gold of Carrick. This classic tangle also took place at Phillips Park under the lights before a capacity crowd. Baldwin's forward wall, though greatly outweighed, played a whale of a game, both on offense and defense, At half-time the score remained 0-0. At the beginning of the third frame Carrick blocked one of Sehmidt's punts turning it into a score when Jennings rammed it over. The extra point was good, making the score 7-0. Although the Highlanders fought to overcome the seven point lead, the Carrick Gridders seemed to have renewed strength, and the final tally showed Coach Eureka's eleven going down to their Hrst defeat, 7-0. Once again the Triadic crown had evaded Baldwin's grasp. MUNHALL Baldwin's next opponents were the Double A Munhall Indians. Playing hard, but out- elassed, the Baldwin eleven was sent crashing to its second defeat by the Maroon and Cray tide. Twice in the first half the wild warriors from Munhall crossed the final chalk mark to garner four- teen points, and then came roaring back in the second half to jump the score to a 32-0 at the final whistle. Coach Eureka substituted freely and provided valuable experience for next year's team. MARS Mars provided the battle ground for the next encounter. The Baldwin boys scored late in the sceond period by sending Carson smashing twenty-five yards off tackle for the score. The Highlanders failed to make it seven when the conversion attempt went wide. outside the uprights. Late in the fourth frame the Planets found the goal line and rammed the pigskin over, but they too, failed to make the extra point. The game ended in a 6-6 tie, dropping Baldwin from the A race. VANDERGRIFT The boys from the Highlands took on the Vandergrift Lancers as their next opponents. A large and powerful Van team knocked off the boys clad in purple and white by a ffl-20 score. Bald- win eouldn't get their passing attack clicking as the lanky Lancers intercepted three aerials and turned them into tallies. Tomko, Ross, and Mackewich scored for the locals. ELIZABETH Again at the South Park Oval the purple and White gridders trounced an opposing eleven. Elizabeth was the team to feel the sting of the Baldwin boys. The Highlanders took an early lead when Tomko received the kick-off and scampered all the way to pay dirt. Lutch also broke loose and jaunted seventy-Hve yards for a six pointer. Three more T. D.'s were added as Baldwin coasted to a 32-0 win over Elizabeth. DORMONT in hope of knocking the Dormont Bulldogs from the A race, the Highlanders played valiant hall. The Dormont eleven took off to an early lead but Baldwin came striving back trying to over- come the Bulldogs. Carson scored for the Baldwin boys in the third quarter but the Highlanders' best efforts were thwarted as they finally succumbed to the Bulldogs 20-6. SHALER The final encounter of the grid season found Shaler and Baldwin clashing at the former's field. The Shalerites were aiming to keep in the A race and the Highlanders were trying to prove that the Huskies' bark was worse than their bite. Two teams, full of Hght, tangled in a bruising battle. No less than four B. H. S. boys got the thumb while a total of 95 yards in penalties was amassed against the visitors compared to ten against Shaler The Huskies scored in the opening and closing frames but the Purple and White couldn't find the pay-off line and was set down 12-0. . f' . . :E .1-5,5 ' K K -K Scovron Reck Pumphrey Lyle Chiurazzi Uhl Nzlsci Marcus Tomko Kurtz Christ Carr Councilor Bonctti Grier s 3 'M A OQO L f 2:1 E Maltei B0ll0llli J My MQW X W H X ,ff 3' 1 1 Lf ., sgz 1 i . GLASS HISTORY Seventh Grade In our first year at Baldwin we played the old game of getting lost and being late for all classes, but not lunch. Before long we learned to cheer just as loud as anyone else when our team was winning. And oh! how we envied those seniors as we sat in the back of the auditorium during assembly! But we liked our Hrst taste of B. H. S .... the only thing we missed was recess. Eighth Grade We became more interested in school affairs. We attended the dances whether we could dance or not-M there was always the refreshment stand. The 8-2's held the Hrst -lunior High dance in the cafeteria. Ninth Grade Something new came to us in the form of the split fifth period. A blonde lass . . . Doree Cartwright . . . was added to our class and it didn't take Bob Lyles long to sit up and take notice. Till Then by the Mills Brothers was the tune of the times. VVe had a, very successful class party e-checkers, dorninoes, and all. iVe began to recognize the talent in our class, and before long put on assemblies and organized a. quartet. Many of us took part in the Variety Show. At last we were eligible to join the Purbalite! Tenth Grade Ah! Senior High! Under Mrs. Shea's guidance we organized our Sophomore Glass. Gloria Sorger, Jo Jarvis, and Marian Haines were selected as May Queen attendants. We ordered our class rings, which were standardized for the first time in the history of Baldwin. Then came the day when the entire school went outside for the planting of a new tree. Sophomore girls dated Senior boys. We had our First-and last bonfire. The Highlander was chosen as our official school emblem. Eleventh Grade Our rings arrived! Mr. Eureka came back to B. H. S. A power shortage caused the school to conserveg we got a day ofif! Then came the strike, lasting three days. We beat Brentwood in football, although they beat us in basketball. Twelfth Grade At the top of the ladder now- what a climb! Hal Hizer was elected Student Senate President, Byron Uhl, Senior Glass President. Once again we defeated Brentwood. The girls swooned over Lawrence Olivier in As You Like lt We proudly exchanged pictures and name cards. Our class play was a huge success. We felt very sentimental at the Senior Prom, especially as we tearfully hummed our Alma Mater. Commencement was a real feather in our caps, but a ratha sad one. XVe must leave Baldwin, but we'll never forget it. SENIOR CLASS PLAY Stage-Struck was the name of the play chosen by the class of 1948. Under the direction of Mrs. Shea the play was given in the school auditorium, Friday. March 19, 1948. The play is centered around Jennifer George, a stage-struck girl of seven- teen. Jennifer imagines herself a great actress and she makes her every move very dramatic. She manages to get the part of L'Sylvia Trent in the play from a well- known novel written by Taylor Chase. Dave Burton, an adolescent of seventeen. is in love with Jennifer, but seeing that she prefers the stage to him, he decides he doesn't want an actress, just a girl, and turns to her sister, Alice. As it turns out. Taylor Chase happens to be Professor john Whittier. a nephew of the wealthy and influential Mrs. Whittier. In spite of the fact that John is also in love with jennifer, he asks Christine Bryant, a successful Broadway actress, to take the part of Sylvia, but Christine, sensing .Iennifer's hurt, gives the part back to her. The play has a, happy ending when jennifer realizes that -Iohn isn,t such a dull literature professor, after all. THE CAST jennifer George Alice George ..,... Mrs. George .......,........
