We've had our joys and sorrows too The same as all the rest. Our aim in life is living well. We'll strive to do our part To help set right a twisted world And sooth the troubled heart. OUR DRAlVIA'S DRAMA Ever Since Eve , which was chosen as the class play production of the class of 1945, attained success only because of the willingness to cooperate on the part of the directress, Mrs. Choffat, the cast, and the production staff. As the play opens, Johnny Clover, a seventeen-year-old boy around whom the plot is woven, is busy with his tasks as editor of the Preston High School news- paper. Susan Blake, who has liked Johnny since the beginning of school, enters the picture and causes a small revolution when she is elected assistant editor of the paper. Love comes to Johnny, and practically every other boy of Preston Hi, in the form of Lucybelle Lee, a southern charmer from Tennessee. When Johnny contracts measles, Susan takes complete control of editing The Christmas Issue and arranges the paper in her own way. After the paper comes off the press and is distributed throughout the town, Johnny discovers the series of em- barassing situations Susan has caused through her editing errors. The trouble finally clears and at the close of the play, Johnny, realizing that Susan isn't so annoying after all, escorts her to the Christmas Prom. THE CAST johnny Clover .... Mrs. Clover ...... Baldwin can look forward to each year under lNIr. Wilkinsons leadership, and feel sure of having sound, well-coached, sueeessful teams. THEFOOTBALLTEAM Baldwin's football Highlanders proved to he a greatly improved team this year. A record of two wins and two ties, proves this. The fine spirit and teamwork of the group were predominate over individual performances in every game. Bob Peterson, who has played eenter for the past three years, led the charges of the linc. He was flanked by Washabaugh, Cass, Cegelis, and Glover who were used alter- nately with Yoders and Urcavich. Black and Schluter proved valuable flankers, with Blaek starring at kicking extra-points. Lloyd Kraus was outstanding whether calling signals, or playing half-back. He saved many scores with his open-field tackling. Nesbitt, Maley, and Lostetter eompletcd a spirited and speedy backficld. The school can well bc proud of this years tczllll. They provided the fans with exciting moments and gave every team they met a good, hard battle. Baldwin came within scoring range often, but lacked the punch to cross the goal. The team showed a well balanced offense, and gave promise of some thrilling QEIITICS to COITIC. BALDWIN 6-BETHEL 0 This game was played at Baldwin Field and was sweet revenge for the defeat Bethel dealt us last year. The score came in the last quarter. Yogan plunged over from the one yard line after Kraus had tossed a beautiful twenty five yard pass to Black. CARRICK 26-BALDWIN 0 Baldwin's first defeat was handed out hy Carrick under the lights at Phillips Park, in the first 'l'riadic League activity of the year. Carrick's initial score came when the game was just a few minutes old. The team put up a closer game than the score indicates. Two sustained drives of over fifty yards each were carried to the Carrick 10 yard line, but there Carrick held that line. BRENTWOOD 13-BALDWIN 7 An overflow crowd at Phillips Park can never forget how near Baldwin came to defeat- ing the heavily favored Brentwood team that night. The Highlanders took a first period lead when a Brentwood punt was blocked, and Lostetter recovered it for a Baldwin touchdown. In the fourth period, with Brentwood leading, Baldwin went 58 yards to the Spartanls 3 yard line, hut a 15 yard penalty set them back and Brentwoods line stopped the drive. Q 1 CORAOPOLIS 13-BALDWIN 7 In this game, Baldwin again was first to score, and again their lead was overcome by two enemy touchdowns. Maley plunged over from the two yard line, climaxing a 55 yard march. Black again was successful in kicking the extra point. BALDWIN 13-SNOWDEN 0 This game is unique in our football history, there were more players than spectators. There was more mud than anything and with a hard driving rain it held the game to straight line play and punting. Black scored in the first quarter on one of the few passes and followed up by kicking the extra point. Schultz went 30 yards for Baldwin's second touchdown in the first quarter. BALDWIN 7-ELIZABETH 7 The Highlanders came from behind to tie Elizabeth in a game clean and well-played from start to finish. Elizabeth scored on a pass and led at the half 7 to 0. Baldwin's touchdown came after a 70 yard drive down the field. Kraus made the last l9 yards on an end run. Black tied the game by booting the seventh point. DORMONT 51-BALDWIN 7 None of Baldwin's spirit or fight was missing from this game, but Dormont's fast, power- ful team had too much T-formation magic. The game was fairly even until the final stanza when the dykes broke and a flood of four Dormont touchdowns cascaded over the goal. Lostetter gave Dormont a taste of our power when he raced 70 yards behind good blocking for the one touchdown. SHALER 12-BALDWIN 0 Shaler Township is a new name on Baldwin's schedule, but they wasted no time in racking up a 12 to 0 victory in the Armistice Day game. Peterson, Glover, Cass, Nesbitt, Kraus, Black, and Washabaugh donned the Purple and White for Baldwin for the last time. A glorious victory was accomplished over our Triadic League rival, Carrick, by a 37-35 score. Brentwood, our other friendly rival of the Triadic-League, downed us by two points This proved to be one of the most exciting games of the season. UNIOB HIGH BASKETBALL This year the Junior High Basketball Team, coached by Mr. Brandtonies, displayed outstanding progress in speed and accuracy. The Little Highlanders worked hard the entire season to finish the year with a record of six victories and eight losses. 'l'ompko was the most able basketeer and leading scorer of the team. We certainly can look forward to a promising Varsity. With the never say die efforts of Reck, Lyle, Sobczak, Maley, Euler, and Scovron, Baldwin, can feel confident that more victories will come her way in a few years. Half of the players on the twenty man squad were freshmeng five were from the seventh gradeg and five eighth graders comprised the remainder of the team. All members of this squad are to be complimented upon their efforts to bring the school success. J, o SOCCER Soccer, the one time mystery sport , has finally come to be recognized by the Baldwinites as one of the outstanding sports of our school. Coached by Mr. McGibbeny and led by Captain Charles Bradish, the squad succeeded in defeating Snowden and Bridgeville. After tying with South Fayette, the tables turned and the Baldwinites succumbed to South Fayette as well as to Snowden. Bartos, Bradish, and Melani, will be absent from this ycar's line-up, but out- standing players such as Schmitt, Spasbo, Tzxueher, and Wfalbert are determined that the '45 season will be a victorious one. Phillips, Guastini, Schultz, and Christopherson return to aid in verifying the statement that at successful season is in store for the Booters,' from Baldwin High. GOLF Mr. Maley's Hswing eorpsu completed another of its successful seasons, as it emerged the undefeated champions of its W.P.l.A.L. section. After defeating Bethel, Mt. Lebanon, and Snr mxa' den with a delightful bit of ease, the Kings of Swing entered the lV.P.l.A.L. playoffs with high spirits and hopes of capturing their first golf cup. With the victory over Wfest View in the semi-final playoffs, the Cup was practically a reality. The fact that the Highlanders had lost to Penn two years in succession convinced the Baldwinites that their third meeting would bring them certain victory. The Pennettes proved to be champions and the spell was broken. The Baldwinites returned home with the memory of the Qlfg-Slfg defeat lingering unpleasantly in their minds. The success of the squad was due to the consistent playing of Bartos, Bradish, Rhodes, lNalbert, and Ruzzi. BASEBALL With a bat, a hall, and a prayer, a group of eager hall players represented Baldwin in W.P.I.A.L. competition last year. It was an exacting job choosing nine regulars from the many boys who tried out for positions, hut hard praetiee told the story, and a team with uplenty of spiritn was evolved. Mr. Maley managed the team splenclidly, and taught the players to take the bad breaks in stride. - The schedule called for six games, two eaeh with lfVest View, Grafton, and Mt. Lebanon. Although the team didn't win a game, they showed typical Bald- win spirit and teamwork eaeh time they took the field. Howard Hap,' Williams led the pitchers, with Glenn Noble. 6'Skip Ringei- son, and Edward Rump eompleting a servieeahle staff. Ed Gregor handled the catching duties.
