Move-Up is the climax of a graduate's career. Symbols of authority' are given to the upper classinen - pins to the new L l2's, sweaters and senior privileges to the new H l2's, and the processional and places on the stage to the graduates. Silence during the presentations, applause for the musical selections, an ovation for the trophy' winners. and finally, tearsg these are all part of this great prograni. lt's pretty' hard to sing the hymn, but it's a tradition-tears and all. Jefferson expressed his point of view: Hthe dead hand of the past attempting to guide the future. In seeking guidance, human beings must look for practical answers. The past has great Value, but it must not blind us to the fast pace of our time. Ofttimes tradition does not consider origi- nality, and Americans are the most original people in the world. In contrast, tradition is a great stabilizer in our society and in our school, but it must not get in the road when we have new problems to solve and new issues to analyze. In our school we must provide an organization to take care of the individual. A person is a very delicate and complicated organism, and we must provide our facilities so that he will be in a climate to want to do his very best. Any person contemplating a successful future will have to learn to go past mediocrity. He may satisfy his group if he does not do too well, but when the employer interviews him, he will stand all alone before the desk of the personnel manager, and hc will be hired for what he is and for what he may become. If he has learned well, and is equipped with the habit of being satisfied with the best and nothing less, the pay will be most rewarding. At Balboa it is my earnest hope that our graduating students will forever strive upward to achieve the highest pinnacle of success in what ever Held holds their greatest interest. R. H.
