Traditions seem to build themselves over the years until they have become the foundations of loyalty, and the invisible element we call spirit. These things really make a school. It is for this reason that we of the Galleon Staff decided to build the 1955 Galleon around the school year as expressed by tradition. On the front end sheet there is a picture of the new seniors getting ready to run down the aisles at the Move-Up Assembly, depicting the beginning of the term. The back end sheet, consisting of graduating seniors, shows the end of the term. Between these are pictured many other traditions of which Balboa students are rightfully proud. In the years to come, you will look back on your school years and remember how much fun there was, and how these traditions helped to induce this fun as well as a few tears, perhaps. We hope this 1955 Galleon will add in some way to your pleasant memories, and to the enjoyment of your thoughts. Jefferson expressed his point of view: Hthe dead hand of the past attempting to guide the future. In seeking guidance, human beings must look for practical answers. The past has great Value, but it must not blind us to the fast pace of our time. Ofttimes tradition does not consider origi- nality, and Americans are the most original people in the world. In contrast, tradition is a great stabilizer in our society and in our school, but it must not get in the road when we have new problems to solve and new issues to analyze. In our school we must provide an organization to take care of the individual. A person is a very delicate and complicated organism, and we must provide our facilities so that he will be in a climate to want to do his very best. Any person contemplating a successful future will have to learn to go past mediocrity. He may satisfy his group if he does not do too well, but when the employer interviews him, he will stand all alone before the desk of the personnel manager, and hc will be hired for what he is and for what he may become. If he has learned well, and is equipped with the habit of being satisfied with the best and nothing less, the pay will be most rewarding. At Balboa it is my earnest hope that our graduating students will forever strive upward to achieve the highest pinnacle of success in what ever Held holds their greatest interest. R. H. LEHMAN Principal Charles Swinburne niust have been a graduating senior when he said Dead and gone. the days we had together ---- It's true if we count only' the days oi the past year. but what we did on those days remains with us stronger than ever. Move-Up is the climax of a graduate's career. Symbols of authority' are given to the upper classinen - pins to the new L l2's, sweaters and senior privileges to the new H l2's, and the processional and places on the stage to the graduates. Silence during the presentations, applause for the musical selections, an ovation for the trophy' winners. and finally, tearsg these are all part of this great prograni. lt's pretty' hard to sing the hymn, but it's a tradition-tears and all. Well, some have failed, while, on the other hand, there are some who are able to join the California Scholarship Federation. The CSF is an organization for people who have received the top grades in the school. The sponsor is Miss Natalia Aced, who has guided the group for a number ol years. To join the Council each boy applies with the sponsor, Mr. Hansen. Then he must have a form signed by his reg. teacher, his counselor, the principal, vice principal and three members of the Council. A meeting is then held in which the new members are elected. Boys who hold an S.A. office and those on the board of directors are made honorary members of the organization. The Boys' Council has many other duties besides maintain- ing order. At the Bal's Open House the Boys' Council, with the Girls' Council, escorted parents to various roomsand sup- plied information to assist them in their inspection of the school. They are also on duty in the cafeteria during lunch periods to see that it is left in good order. Easily recognized by their orange and blue caps, members of the Boys' Council can be seen at all school activities and are doing a tremendous job. Members of the Girls' Council are either representatives of some Balboa organization or are outstanding in school activities. The Council and the Girls' Block B held their joint picnic on November E50 at Sigmund Stern Grove. The enthusiasm of all who attended made the affair rnernorable. At the end of each terrn the Girls' Council serves a breakfast to introduce new mernbers. 'ff f I Af lumni: The 're LU al ll- An organization popular with Balboa gradu- ates is the Alumni Association. A while back, it broke up and was inactive a number of years. It was reorganized by a group of boys in l9-15-46, and Bud Harris was a sort of spark plug of the organization. In June of l95l the Alumni had a banquet in honor of the retirement of Mr. Chase, former principal of Balboa. At this time there were eight speakers, of which seven were former Bal- boa Student Association presidents. The group has meetings every third XN'ednes- day of every school month. A recent dance, Un- der the Stars of Paris, was sponsored by the Alumni. In April, the Alumni had a reunion of the Class of 1947, and the turnout was surprising: about T5 per cent of all the kids came to their dinner-dance in San Anselmo. The Pterodactyls is an organization, for Bal- boa graduates only, which gives a trophy to the schools outstanding athlete every semester. Mr. Gibson was the sponsor for a number of years, but after a while the Pterodactyls, consist- ing of adults, no longer needed a sponsor. Joe McMillan, former Student Association prexy, is the current president. As it goes to press, the Galleon is unable to tell who the Pterodactyls will honor this semester, or what they will do at Move-up, because the information is not available. Another name for the Pterodactyls is Loyal Order of Graduates. Alumni members renew acquaintances around the Little Theater piano, During the fall '54 term the Balboa Choir and Girls' Chorus sang at the Music Assembly, doing very well under the competent direction ol' Mr. Bernard. The Cliristinas assembly came next, and the two voice classes joined lorces to make a very exciting program. At the close ol' the term the Choir sang for graduation. ln the spring the Girls' Chorus sang before a Masonic lodge and Ill zu school assembly late in the term. The choir performed during Public Schools YVeek at sev- eral ol the neigliborhood banks, and also at the late term music assembly, as well as at graduation. lflitiir, Chorus Win Biiiitl Will GIRLS' CHORUS lFALLJ Bottom Row: Wright, Rodinck, Steingasser, Cuschieri, Carnpagna, Tarfer. The end of regular season play found the Bucs occupying third place in the league, and therefore qualified to participate in the play-offs. Bal was scheduled to meet Sacred Heart, the round-robin champs, in a best two out of three semi-finals series. VARSITY BASEBALL But Swaiters ln Pla -offs In the first game, Balboa was defeated by the Irish, 9-3. In the second game, Sacred Heart was handed its first defeat of the season, -1-2. Ernie Evans pitched for the Pirates, and also hit three for three. Balboa hopes for a play-offs champion- ship were smashed, however, by a 10-0 beating in the third game. Two Bal players were chosen for the first string of an all-city team elected by the league's players and coaches. The honors went to Tom Tarantino, outfielder, and Ernie Evans. Honor- able mention went to Russ Fadeff, Karl Ryden, Bud Williams, and Jim Miguel. Mr. Hedden performed the very capable coaching job with the horsehiders this year. Mr. Haas, baseball coach in recent years, has been working at the central office on a special assign- ment. Bottom Row: Crudo, Williams, Harckbarth, Fadeff, Haiiht, Miquel, Rodriquez, Mr. He-dden. Balboa Girls Have Fun in GAA Miss Bess Powell, who has been head of girls' l sports at Bal for twenty years, has reason to be proud ot' her achievements. During those years Balboa girls have become more sports minded, and good scholarship and good sportsmanship have risen together. An ever-widening selection Fall vice President of sports has been oflered under her leadership. The most pleasant memories Miss Powell has of her twenty years as head of girls' sports are the girls who have received GAA awards, for they are the Cream of the crop, combining good scholarship and good sportsmanship. To get an award a member may be absent only three times at the most, must be a good sportsman, and must be courteous and polite to the instructor, team- mates, and opposition. It is not easy to get a GAA awardg many who start out never complete the task. SWlM.MERS' AIDS KFALLJ Bottom Row: Kelso, Hoerner, Rado, Butcher, Pease. Top Row: Gowan.
