ur mind and bvdie The GIRLS' P.E. DEPARTMENT at Bakersfield High School was the largest in the state of California. The department offered many exceptional courses which most other high schools did not have. The instructors for those specialized subjects came to B.H.S. to fill the needs of the girls. Tap dance, archery, golf, modern dance, track, tennis, and basketball were just a few of the courses a student may choose. Varied classes were presented to those girls who excelled in certain fields such as Modern Dance Club, Agua- nettes, Teen Teachers, Swim Team, and Tennis Team. With twelve teachers on the staff, it was not hard for the two thousand girls who passed through the gym each day to recognize why our P.E. Department was the best. For the first time this year a new enriched program for students of honors classes was instituted. They studied both traditional math and the special program of the school Mathematics Study Group. The SMSG program placed particular emphasis on properties of real numbers. 29
