Self-realization of their own potential was fulfilled by the members of the ENG- LISH DEPARTMEN T. No longer restricted to the teaching of traditional grammar, the department enlarged its scope to in- clude the complete humanities. Mr. Don Ringler and Mr. Hal Silverman created a stimulating and challenging program for teaching the humanities. Thus stu- dents expanded their knowledge by the study of philosophical traditions and intellectual and literary trends. A significant element of the fresh program was team teaching. Different teachers delivered lectures on various subjects to large sessions of classes: then, smaller seminar groups discussed in depth the ideas presented in the lec- ture sessions. Lecture material was sup- plemented by a series of films, and ad- ditional reading was assigned, with an emphasis on the Classics. Members of the SOCIAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT sought to impress students with the lessons learned from past experiences. Hopefully, the tragic pattern of wars and de- struction would not be repeated bv succeeding generations. Of equally great import was the growth in understanding peoples of different backgrounds and ethnic origins and broadening of view- points. Students were guided in the study of man and the development of his cultures, social structures, po- litical organizations, and economic systems by the social science teach- ars. Students were able to relate this newly-acquired knowledge to the international situation.
