The department acquainted stu- dents With their cultural and literary heritage and provided instruction in communication skills. Interested stu- dents took specialized courses such as debate, journalism, drama, public speak- ing, and radio production. Sponsoring the Read a Classic Week, and provid- ing a large variety ot films, books, and records were important parts of the de- partments activities. The VISUAL AIDS DEPARTMENT maintained and serviced all films, pro- jectors, records, cmd tapes used in class- rooms. Students assisted in producing slides and movies, and in moving equip- ment. The department filmed student activities for Open House and also cap- tured on film, football games and club activities. Maintaining health service for Bakers- field High students was the task of NURSES lone Bailey and Lillian Howe. They saw that new students had phys- ical examinations, contacted parents re- garding students with physical defects, and readmitted those who were absent three or more days. .4-.1 .ps-.. . .. ...I ,. .4 .. .-.... .. . Lillian l-lowen, Girls' Nurse: lone Bailey, Boys' Nurse. The LIBRARIANS, working with the teachers, ordered books which increased the scope of the library. They also com- piled book lists, trained student assist- ants, kept the library in order, and taught or unit to freshman social studies classes on the use of the library. Newly remodeled and redecorated, the STUDENT LIBRARY, located in Spindt Hall, helped students by provid- ing information for reports, books for reading, and quiet atmosphere for study and homework. The library was open to students first through eight periods. The student library offered reference books, books for pleasure and a place to study.

This year empha- sis was placed on teaching students the dangers of communism. The department continued lecture classes designed to prepare students tor college by teaching them how to take efficient notes.
