The VICE-PRINCIPALS assisted the Principal as Well as fulfilled individual responsibilities. Herbert Martin, Dean of Boys, supervised student welfare for male students. E. C. Mills was Coordi- nator of Counseling and Guidance Serv- ices and served as Director of the Sum- mer School Program. I. S. Wallace was responsible for coordinating the curricu- lum and served as chairman of the Scholarship Committee. AJ .f-Ely' L. W. Hedge showed tireless effort in performinqiltha vari- ous duties of Principal of Bakersfield High Sc ool. Leslie W. Hedge, PRINCIPAL, has pro- vided inspirational leadership since 1939. This year under his guidance BHS continued to gain a reputation of excel- lence. Mr. Hedge expanded his activ- ities to include serving as president ot California Association of Secondary School Administrators and spearhead- ing the starte accreditation program. Herbert L. 14 mini tration hand ed Theron McCuen, District Superintendent, continued serving as secretary and professional advisor to the Board of Trustees. Mr. T. I... McCuen, DISTRICT SUPER- INTENDENT since 1945, and secretary and professional advisor to the Board of Trustees, assisted in the fulfillment of Board policies. I-Ie first came to the Dis- trict in l929 as a teacher, then served as Assistant Superintendent in charge of business affairs. During the past year he was President of the California Associ- ation of School Administrators. The fivemember BOARD OF TRUSTEES was responsible for approving the school financial and building programs, adopting textbooks and courses of study, employing personnel, and establishing all district policies. The Board approved the plans for the rehabilitation of the Science, Shop, and Library build- ings on the BHS campus. Bakersfield High School was one of the ten member schools of the Kern County Union High School and Iunior College Districts to benefit from special educational and business services offered by the DISTRICT OFFICE. 'delinquent students. Bonnye Deal, DIRECTOR OF TEST- ING, planned, supervised, and admin- istered general aptitude, achievement, and vocational-interest tests. Miss Deal also gave individual tests to students having special problems. Elwood Leaplev, SUPERVISOR OF ATTENDANCE AND WELFARE, had otherduties besides watchinq over the attendance' of students. As part of his job as general. supervisor of students, he issued student parking permits, kept the campus ,free from loiterers, and assisted with the testing program. Eloise Nelson, DEAN OF GIRLS, was responsible for a special attendance file, had charge ot serious problems ol mal- adjustrnent, handled discipline problems concerning girls, and Worked with other women counselors, the faculty, and city officials. Miss Nelson's duties also in- cluded coordinating selection ot Citizen- ship Awazrd candidates, Bank ot Amer- ica Award winners, and Senior Service Awards.
