Baker University Baldwin, Kansas 7 Published annually by students of Baker University C 1 Ann Bussing Ed' or D C1 C D'g Parmenter Hall, once known as Old Science Hall, required 20 years to erect and occupy. A gift of SlOO by Abraham Lincoln aided in building finances. The crowded conditions of a growing campus required more room. Centenary Hall was completed in l884. .. The building was razed in 1964. It was built as symbol of progress and it was destroyed to let progress continue. WMS-V:1ie-aLViL Kibbee C abin Stone Hall Old Castle Lucius Kibbee, having c om e from Indiana, built this log cabin in 1853 about two miles north of Baldwin. In this cabin, the Rev. Wm. H. Goode preached the fir s t sermon to white set- tlers in the new Kansas territory. ln March of l857, a group met at Kibbee cabin and decided to build a college at Palmyra QBaldwinJ. So in this h um ble cabin, Baker University, named after Bishop Baker, had its birth. The Stone Church, one of the first Methodist buildings in Kansas, was built in l868. The church was used for 15 years until the atten- dance became so great that the worship service was m oved in l885 to the chapel in Centenary Hall. The Stone Church was c on verted into a girls' dormitory and later into a mens' dormi- tory. Old Castle, the first college building was s tarted in the spring of l858. On the building site one block east ofthe campus, the first four -year liberal arts college in Kansas opened its doors. Local Methodists were meeting in the chapel of C e nt ena ry Hall until the new brick church was completed in 1904. On its corner, this church stood for the highest idealsfor a Chris- tian college and sad was the day in November of i930 when it burned. A modern Gothic stone church was built in l932 and is used to this day for university worship. The campus forms the heart of student life. Architecture is the embodiment of the human act. FUOTBALL 196 as 'Stir Q giwtlflt w f 'vw s Spurred by the inspirations of an inexperienced quarterback with a young team, the Baker Wild- cats forged a winning season and ended standing third among the conference teams. At the beginning of the season, Coach jim Irick had to rely on the talents of Hank Perry as his quarterback. Perry hadnever so much as called aplay before this year, but did the job more than just commendably. With backs like Mike and Dave Turner, Woody Hobson, anda solid forward wall of men like Dave Huebner, Mike Stouffer, Al LeDoux, Ken jones, Bob Everly and Terry Wyrick, the job became much easier. Things looked a bit rough in the opener of the season as the Cam turned back the Bethel gridmen, 19-O. The win was by a convincing margin but the play still needed improvements. 1325? we Baker 19 Baker 27 Baker 35 Baker 13 Baker 5 Baker 16 Baker 2 6 Baker 13 Baker 14 168 Average score - 18 . 6 Opponent- 13 . 6 Returning le ttermen- 1 8 Bethel O Sterling 12 C of E 7 Kansas Wesleyan 7 21 Southwestern McPherson 0 Bethany O Friends 46 Ottawa 30 123 ri-gr Sterling was rated as one of the top teams in the con- ference and was figured to be one of the te am s to beat. As game time rolled around, the Cats were ready and dida handy little upsetby the score of 27-12. Things were looking better. The next Week brought C of E to Cavaness Field and the haunting rernembrances of the uncanny difficulty Baker had always had facing the husky Emporians. Apparently unfaul- te r e d by the league's le a ding passer and best field goal kicker, the Wildcats ground to another Victory, this one by a Very impressive tally of 35-7. With three victories under their belt, Baker's footballers had an edge going into their next contest with a tough Kansas W esl eyan, current produc er of the league's best ground gainer. The contest was tense and closely fought, and again, the Cats came out on top, 13-7. Next in line was Southwesten, a pow e rful team which had been gaining m om entum through its first four games, and like Baker hadn't yet experienced its first loss. It was indeed an unfruitful night for the Wildcats as they struggled to stay in the contest to take a 21-5 beating. sf fr.,,,,. Us If I iiififiali 1 - ar f - .. Us . Nj - ' ' . ' . Traveling to Bethany for the seventh game of the e xpiring season, the Wildcats were hoping to finish with just a single blemish on theirwin-loss record, and in so wishing, trounced the Swedes impressively, 26-O. A bitter cold Wichita night, and a fired up un- Friendly football team took away any chance for a second place title. Everything ran amiss and Baker suffered an undue b eating by the score of 46-13. The last game of the s e a son comes nigh, and as usual, with our archrival Ottawa. It was a close first half, but as the forth quarter drew to a clos e, the Wildcats had fallen in de feat. The score, 30-14. The Wildcats finished the season, 6-3, and placed Doug Kelsey on the All-Conference squad, the only man from Baker to make the team. 1 A 72 gall' T an Hq,.-...tiff Y -1 R in ,E xx, W fl! fl H1 A Zi ,,,...-auuunlpvf M, q .F f-dna - , A , QQ 1 A WV M ! Four of last year's first seven were gone with only one transfer student coming in and a hand- ful oftreshmenreturning to compile a team for the dawn- ing season. With just a glance, die situation could be appraised, lack of height. However, in the season's opener against Missouri Valley, the Cats managed a convincing 87-67 victory. In it'spre-season tournament, Baker suffered dual losses from lack of good solid play: one in overtime. Returning to begin the conference schedule found Baker facing a tall Southwestern. The Builders emerged on top by a score of 84-74. The Threshers from Bethel didn't let up as they taxed the Bakerites fora score of 66-63 in a closely fought battle. Standing O-2 in the young season, Baker faced McPherson and Sterling next, both successfully. The Cats emerged with scores of 57-53 and 75-61, respectively. Coming back after the winter holidays, Ottawa was next on t.he list. Troubled by erratic play, the Cats tumbled bya score of 64-57. Traveling to Emporia found the Cats vainly trying to redeem themselves, C of Ewon handily over a very cold Baker squad, 71-58. Once again on the road, Bethany was their next foe. Expectinga dismayed team, the Swedes were surprised to find quite the opposite as Baker won easily, 61-50. At Kansas Wesleyan, current dark horse in the league, another loss was tallied, and following in a game with the leader of the conference, Friends, once again the Cats failed to emerge on top. In their next contest with Bethel, on the Threshers' home court, the Cats began their battle successfully but emerged the loser. McPherson had been beaten by the Cats once before, but the acquiring of a transfer student for the Bulldogs and a cold night for the Cats brought yet another defeat. Then venturing to Sterling, the Baker Cagers anticipated a grueling contest from an improved ball club, but their anticipation proved inadequate and once again a mark was tallied in the loss column. Returning for the first of three home games, the Cats caught an unsuspecting Ottawa off guard, 58-55 to end their losing streak of five. ---... Fhirw 1...-...W---M 4 Q , t 3. The Cats came within reach, but couldn't overcome the Presbies' first half attack and they fell in defeat. Bethany came to Baldwin next with revenge in its tactics and won a close contest, 71-68. Arriving inWichita to ply the league-leading Friends team, Baker played controlled ball until the final minutes but could not suppress an onrushing Friends attack. The game was forced into overtime and finally Friends won 80-78. In their last road game, with Southwestern, the Wildcats failed to put four quarters of good basket- ball together and suffered a 72-60 defeat. Coming home to meeta title -hungry K-Wesleyan in the sea- son's finale, the Cats were submerged by a remark- able shooting attack, 101-80.
