K B U B on The Air DON BLADES, JERRY HOLLEY This program is coming to you from the heart of Baker University, ...These are familiar words to the many radio listeners of Baldwin City, Kansas, and the surrounding area. From the studio in Parmenter, KBUB's competent staff of twenty-eight-under the guiding sponsorship of Mrs. Thelma Morreale fill the air ways with sounds of music, news, weather, and sports. KBUB was given birth in September of 1957 and has since made great progress. At present, the broad- casting schedule has been expanded to include each day of the week, with a weekly tally of seventeen hours. KBUB's rapid progress and success can be credited to the fine staff work, strengthened by the new and improved equipment. The name of Ed O' Donnell, the station's chief engineer, has masterminded the complex technical and electrical groundwork and is certainly deserving of mention, for it was he, who through many extra hours of work, finally got our station running again after days of endless trouble. Graduating from Baker in 1933, Coach Spear closed a successful career of athletic endeavor lettering four years intfootball, basketball, golf, and track.. More- over, he was all-conference in football for three years, in basketball one year, second in state golf competition and one of the top eleven men in football in Kansas. Coach Spear did his graduate work at Kansas University, Iowa University, and Missouri University. He received his M.A. degree from Kansas University. After suc- cessful coaching years at -Harper, Concordia, and Atchison high schools, he came back to accept the positions of athletic director, football, track, and golf coach, assistant basketball coach, sponsor of the B- Club and professor, During his years at Baker, Coach Spear has tried to make men of his athletes. Even though he desires to win, he has always stressed good character above victory in preparing his men for life. Coach Jim Irick: Jim Irick, Baker Alumnus, was afour-year letterman in both football and basketball and a member of one of Baker's undefeated teams in his days as a Student. While in the service of Uncle Sam during World War ll in the cold regions of the north Atlantic area, Jim was hot on a top basketball team of that area. He received his A. B.Degree from Baker and after he returned from the war, he was called home to Paola, where he had two successful seasons as basketball coach for the high school from which he had been grad- uated. Irick received his M.A. fI'0If1 Pittsburg State While Serving as an assistant coach there for two years. He then accepted the football coaching position and assistant basketball coach for Parsons high schOO1. ln 1955 his team was undefeated and ranked third in the state. Baker drafted Jim in 1956 to take charge of basketball and tennis coaching, and to assist with football and track coaching for his alma mater. HiS aspiring athletes have respectfully named him QHPtain Blood, because of his demands for conditioning by his players. And, his young men I'GPOI't they know Wen the meaning of this when they find themselves still S0ing and their adversaries are tired. ,ww I ..f a vv, . A -.rwwagaf 3. .. . , 'I 1 . Q' u , Cagers Season Sporadic flashes of brilliance marked theWildcats' 1959-60 basketball season with a first by conquering Ottawa at home and away. The Wildcats' whipped the Ottawa Braves on their own home court by a score of 61-42 led by freshman center Babe Hawk of Atchison. On the Wildcat's home court, they won again 84-59 where Mike Neal broke open' the close ballgame in the second half by hitting 27 points and a total of 34 points for the game. At the season close, a total of eleven games were decided in the last two minutes including two double- overtime games and one over-time game with three other games decided in the last ten seconds. Mike Neal was the top scorer in the conference with 20.3 points per contest and was selected on the first team All-Conference. 'Neal also won the Individual Free Throw title with 85.273, Baker led the league in team scoring with a 76.1 point average and finished second in field goal scoring with 40.8fZp and team free throwing with a 69.32 average. Graduating seniors were Jim Kean, Richard McDowell, Terry Herman, and John Rubow. All of these men were outstanding competitors and will be greatly missed next year. It was a good season-notia championship season- but the way the ball bounces might easily have made it championship. In bringing to fruition the recommendations of the Long Range Planning Committee, Baker University is enriching resources of physical facilities and instructional staff! - . As the oldest four-year liberal arts college in Kansas, we are proud of our heritage. Established in 1858 and named for Osmon .C. Baker, the first Methodist bishop in the Kansas territory, our foundation is clear and strong. To prepare for the space age, so clearly enunciated inf the Centennial celebration, is the purpose and program of the Long Range Planning Committee and the Board of Trustees. n Over a period of six years, more than two million dollars has been invested in thephysical plant. Faculty and staff salaries have been substantially improved. - You hold in your hand the pictorial record of 1959-60. Even as the varsity show used as its theme the movement from the first -half of the twentieth century into the second half, so we at the graduating seniors on facing the future unafraid. - e i V x 1 , ' William J .
