Baker's match factory began, apparently, in 1866, when there were three members of the graduating class-- two men and one woman. No history or fiction reveals whether rivalry existed between the two men, but surely it would seem appropriate. Therefore, let us say that James C. Hall was the winner of the hand of Miss Olive Willey and they, thereby became the first match from the Baker factory and without comment of the hundreds since. 23
