The Centurion came from a long conference about Baker being a leader of meng Baker's motto, Let Him First Be A Man g and the desire of the staff to have a flavor of century introduced. We hope this poetic license meets with general ap- proval. Thank you! D., from the Ohio Medical college, member of the Ohio Methodist Conference in 1835, preacher in West Vir- ginia and later at Dayton and Sandusky, Ohio. Ac- claimed as one of the eloquent preachers of Ohio, Dr. Davis was well prepared to take his place in the new land in the west. At 38, he was transferred to St. Louis, and after a few years he was elected to the chair of natural science in McKendree college, Illinois. When the trustees of the new college at Baldwin were looking for a man of ability, they invited Dr. Davis to be the first president. He arrived September 1, 1858, the day of a memorable camp meeting in the grove south of town. He was at once elected agent for the Kansas Educational Association, and his work was to raise money for the new college. This double duty he carried willingly. In the college, he taught the natural sciences and his wife taught piano and organ. After four years as president in those pioneer days, Dr. Davis resigned to devote all his time to preaching. He was made presiding elder of the Baldwin district, but in a short time he enlisted in the army. After the war he returned to the Kansas Conference and spent his last thirty years in preaching. Twice he was pressed into service as president of the college when some dis- couraged leader gave up. Fourteen years as a presiding elder, three times delegate to the general conference, elected as delegate to the Ecumenical Conference at London, and serving as pastor of the Baldwin church for three years in the prosperous days of 1882-1885, Dr. Davis was honored and loved by all Kansans. He lived to see the college which he started become a strong educational force in the land. He lived to see his son, Harry Thomas Davis, enter the ministry, and become the president of Baker. The funeral services of Dr. Davis were held in the college chapel June 21, 1893, soon after commencement. BAKERS FIRST PRESEDENTS ftop row - left to rightj W. A. Now the Knights of King Arthur's Court have reached the goal of Commence- ment. , This senior class is unique in itself, as it is the lO0th graduating class from Baker University. This year marks the first century of Baker Univer- sity as a place of learning. The seniors have played important roles during their last year at Baker. Seniors have been in Baker Choir, Chapel Choir, Panhellenic, Young Democrats and Young Republicans, lnterfraternity Council, Home Eco- nomics Club, W. A. A., Pep Club, Mu Sigma, Philosophical Forum, Col- lege Fellowship, M.E.N.C. and many of the fraternities. The President of Student Commission and Vice President of Student Commission are seniors. Many other seniors have held offices in various clubs and activities. The Popularity Kings and Queen were members of King Arthur's Court. Some of the seniors were out front leading Baker in a rip roaring cheer . While on the varsity football, basketball and track teams many seniors were found. On the Dean's Honor Roll seniors were consistently found, several with 3.00. The class of King Arthur's Court accepts the challenge awaiting them after graduation. Each will do his best to promote the high standards of Baker University in the next century. 4 g-.am , ,var , -, X if . S N .r - it h 1.4-1-1,,. ' : ww Y' r- f '-QF? Baker's match factory began, apparently, in 1866, when there were three members of the graduating class-- two men and one woman. No history or fiction reveals whether rivalry existed between the two men, but surely it would seem appropriate. Therefore, let us say that James C. Hall was the winner of the hand of Miss Olive Willey and they, thereby became the first match from the Baker factory and without comment of the hundreds since. 23 ,R .lcv ,3 L 4 t - ANDERSON, RICHARD DEE Beattie. Sophomores were well represented on the football, basketball, track and minor sport teams with many participating in the intramural sports. Scholastically speaking, they placed their share regularly on the Dean's Honor Roll. Many sophomores sang in the Baker Choir, the special Centennial Choir, while others contributed their many talents to the spring and fall plays and the Varsity Show. The class of '60 has been very active in the various campus clubs giving a great deal of leadership ability to many clubs. Many sopho- mores held high offices in the variousfraternities on the Baker campus. The class of 760 also placed two cheerleaders on the cheerleading squad. Journalistically, many sophomores held top positions on both the Orange and Wildcat staffs, working very hard to meet the established deadlines. The sophomores were represented by Homecoming Queen attend- ants, Beauty Oueen candidates, Campus Clown and Cutie candidates showing grace and beauty as well as leadership ability for the sopho- mores. As the members of the Columbian Commonwealth look forward to another two years at Baker, they are anticipating new achievements, performing more important duties, and to carrying on the Baker spirit which they have truly exemplified these past two years. 47 5 1 if if T JOHN ADAMS CHARLES ALBRIGHT HARLEY AINSWORTH DON ALEXANDER Mission Kansas City Ottawa Kansas City, Mo. Through our participation in sports and clubs, we have learned the value of associating and working with others. Scholastic ability was shown by the names of many freshmen appearing on the Dean's Honor Roll. The freshmen were well represented in all campus activities, having members on the football, basketball and track teams. Many others participated in intramurals as well. They were also well represented on the Centurion Staff and on the Orange Staff. They showed their ability in drama by taking part in plays and the annual Varsity Show. Many freshmen sang in the University Choir, Chapel Choir, and the Centennial Choir. Others showed their musical ability by being in Baker's Dozen. We were proud to be represented by candidates for beauty queen, homecoming queen. campus cutie and campus clown. With a strong foundation of knowledge and ideals, we shall strive to contribute to the life here at Baker. There were Kappa Sigs on the varsity teams and we did very well in intramurals. We consistently placed several men on the dean's honor roll. 4 'S A Pr' .. 1 A ' . .ASQ , any U 134 .fr 4 1- -A 44 .,,, . as , WM wr 'fi 1 F3 A C51 - M f Q -kg' .. . . Yea Wildcats Y ! ! 1' ll' J, , AV al. .V x N Coach Karl Spear Coach Jim Irick Baker called upon one of her most talented sons when Jim Irick took his place for the second year as head basketball coach. Coach Irick was a four year letterman in both football and basketball while attend- ing Baker. After graduation, Coach Irick was a basket- ball coach for Paola High School, where he enjoyed two successful seasons before getting a Masterls degree from Pittsburg State while acting as an assistant coach. After receiving his Master's Degree, he accepted the post of football coach and assistant B-Ball coach at Parsons High School, where he remained until com- ing to Baker. Coach Irick has done a lot to improve the athletic system at Baker. He stresses the need for cooperation from all parties involved to reach our full potentialities. On the court, Coach Irick stresses team work, condi- tion and desire. Karl S ear Bakeris Athletic Director and head P i football coach is in his twelfth year at the helm of Baker University's Athletic Department. Coach Spear graduated from Baker in 1933, fol- lowing a great athletic career as an undergraduate. He was a four sport letterman in football, basketball, track and golf. He was all-conference three years in football and one year in basketball. In addition he placed second in state golf competition and was chosen one of the top eleven football men in the state. Coach Spear did graduate work at Kansas Uni- versity, Iowa University and Missouri University, re- ceiving his Master's Degree from the University of Kansas. After successful years in high school coaching, he returned to Baker in 1946 as football coach and Athletic Director. Coach Spear, in many minds, is a credit to Baker University. He is one of the busiest men on campus, with such duties as football, track, and golf coach, assistant basketball coach, athletic director, sponsor of the B Club and a full load of classes to teach. In spite of such a load, Coach Spear is always ready to give a helping hand. The experienced Baker line refused to be moved and repeatedly dropped S. W. backs for impressive losses. This was the first sign of things to come from Baker's two new backs Bill White, and Jim Paramore. as they both put on impressive performances. Baker ran head on into its first conference game with College of Emporia. and came out with a 7 to 7 deadlock. In a rough game at Bethany, Baker surpassed their scoring effort of the week before as the Wildcats won 47 to 21. This was the first of four consecutive Homecoming games in which Baker participated. With Queen Mary Lee Reed reigning from the sidelines, the Baker eleven scored an impressive victory over Bethel, making the l957 Homecoming a success with I6 to 0 win. Baker's alert backfield was the key to victory as Bethel attempted 23 passes completing only IO. Scoring honors were taken by Paramore and Harley Ainsworth. The Baker victory skein was halted at four as they invaded Salina to take on the defending Champ- ions. Kansas Wesleyan. After spotting the Coyotes I4 points early in the game the Wildcats closed the gap but couldn't draw ahead and met their first conference defeat. Coach Spear's crew met their second defeat of the season at the hands of William Jewel. The Wildcats were not able to snap back after the K. Wesleyan loss of the week before. The Wildcats clinched second place in the K. C. A. C. with a 27 to I3 victory in the season's finale. Baker's torrid ground game was responsible for most of the scoring while Ottawa scored all their counters on aerials. Bakers scoring was highlighted by a pass interception by Paramore and Jim Lee on a pass play. 1 4 DALE WILLIAMS rv., PERRY MILLER CHUCK WILLIAMS 4 JIM LEE 4 Football Lettermen STEVE SUBLETT T ., 6, I 'vi g ' W A II f L If R' sb I SCOTT MANN 3 I, DON WEBER I LYLE HABERBOSCH BOB SHORES CHUCK BROWN VV O jg: 1 X35 I 32 ,f ...Mui QC L, If , ' f RON GEENENS DAVE ROACH W N CARL ANDERSON EARL YOUNG ,He .I K DICK SHORES BILL WHITE HARRY BEAN CHAUNCEY RUCKER I B U D S P E A R Football Lettermen m as C y , w g 1, K A , 7 .: V M DICK HEDGES HARLEY AINSWORTH i hum xu If JIM PARAMORE an JIM MERIT BILL COLLINS In J I it 6 ., k I , Q gy.
