The Spartans are looking for a fine year next year with many returning let termen and losing only five seniors. Scores The Baker Spartans finished with a 4-3 Eastern B conference record. The coaches were very pleased with the play of the team considering the loss of many key players for the season, including captains Frosty M Williams and Kevin Petersen. The offense improved steadily throughout the year. After many changes in the front line, the team developed a strong line and got some very good blocking up front from Rich Whitmore,Ken Kenitzer, John Lizer, Kent Ketterling and Rich Becker. The Spartan backHcld was led by junior running back Jim Stanton who gained over 1200 yards and also led the team in scoring. Kevin Fleckenstein, another fine running back who arrived midway through the season, helped to balance out some of the running and strengthen the back field. Fullbacks Brian Hickey and Cliff Christianson also added some Fine blocking along with consistent running for short yardage. Junior quarterback Scott Tuggle had a great year as the Spartans number one signal caller, completing 42 of 102 passes, also having some fine runs when called upon. Defensively, the Spartans were led up front by tackles Rich Becker and Kent Ketterling, each scoring well with 341 and 310 points, respectively. The two senior defensive ends, John Lizer and Brian Hickey, played consistently all season long. Backing up the front line were our four tough linebackers who scored well with Rich Whitmore with 323 points and Kenny Kenitzer with 270 points containing the inside and Kevin Fleckenstein starting in mid season with 127 points and Hartley Barefoot with 316 points containing the outside.
