THE AWESOME GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM The Baker Girls basketball team finished the 1981 season with a W-IO record. The three seniors on the team were Laurie Paula Engesser and Kim Lund. Laurie Breitbach was' the team's second lading re bounder with71 defensive rebounds and 36 offensive. There were eight juniors on the varsity each getting a various amount ol playing time. 1 hey were Shelly Barefoot. the varsity’s second leading scorer with 102 points. She was the most consistent from the line, leading the team in free throws with 36 of 57 - over 50 percent. Karla Helfrich led the team in free throw percentage, shooting 61 percent for the year. She was 22 of 37 from the line and had 88 total points for the year. Natalie led the team in assists with 31 for the year. She also added 28 steals and 41 points. Kay Dixon was very consistent offensively and defensively for the Spartans. She had 91 points and 70 rebounds. She also shot over 50 percent from the chanty stripe and contributed 34 steals for the season. Jan Stoddard played well and helped the team in rebounding with 48 defensive rebounds and 20 offensive. Robyn Enos, Julie Bruha and Kathy McGonigal played well when called on to do so and contributed in various ways, always hustling and Irving their best. These three girls should contribute greatly to the Spartans next year. The only sophomore on the team was Traci Wade. She was a fine rebounder with 63 defensive rebounds and offensive. She also scored 74 points for the year. The Spartans lose three fine seniors but Coach Danclson has a very strong, talented squad coming back. They could be a strong factor in the eastern B race next year. K Above- Girls B.B. showing spirit. Far left-Our three seniors on the team. Far right-Asabelle, the team's pet. The Spartans came through the season looking pretty good despite the tough competition with an overall record of 7 wins 9 losses and a conference record of 7 wins-8 losses. The J. V. ’s were younger than most of their competition as three sophomores and two freshmen made up the starting five. Though the Spartans were young, they looked good and made a lot of progress throughout the season. With a record that was just a shade under 500, it really shows that Baker was a team to be respected. The J. V. s represented Baker well not only on the court but off the court also. Baker and Baker High School should be proud of these young ladies. As their coach, I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with every one of the Baker J. v;’s.
