On the left page, in the upper left corner, Pete Stanton and Kevin Petersen tie Mr. Xavier up. On the middle picture on the right page, Paula Engesser gets in the action. Mr. Xavier escapes anyway. Another happening this fall was the Buddy Rich Concert. Buddy gave an excellent performance. The B.H.S. Jazz Band also performed the same night. On the left page the top right picture, Buddy is beating away at his drums. On the right page in the bottom left you see Buddy Rich’s saxophone section. Buddy gave a great performance. On October 31, 1981, as an activity, the Art Club demonstrated how to paint clown faces for the elementary children. Then the children went out trick or treating afterwards. On the left page on the bottom left corner, Carol Beebe is hard at work and in the right corner Kelly Mahon is busy painting. On the right page in the right, Louise Braun is enjoying herself. THE AWESOME GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM The Baker Girls basketball team finished the 1981 season with a W-IO record. The three seniors on the team were Laurie Paula Engesser and Kim Lund. Kim Lund was the leading scorer for the year with 135 total points. Paula Engesser led the team in rebounds with 75 offensive and 133 defensive. She also led the team with 68 steals. Laurie Breitbach was' the team's second lading re bounder with71 defensive rebounds and 36 offensive. There were eight juniors on the varsity each getting a various amount ol playing time. 1 hey were Shelly Barefoot. the varsity’s second leading scorer with 102 points. She was the most consistent from the line, leading the team in free throws with 36 of 57 - over 50 percent. Karla Helfrich led the team in free throw percentage, shooting 61 percent for the year. She was 22 of 37 from the line and had 88 total points for the year. Natalie led the team in assists with 31 for the year. She also added 28 steals and 41 points. Kay Dixon was very consistent offensively and defensively for the Spartans. She had 91 points and 70 rebounds. She also shot over 50 percent from the chanty stripe and contributed 34 steals for the season. Jan Stoddard played well and helped the team in rebounding with 48 defensive rebounds and 20 offensive. Robyn Enos, Julie Bruha and Kathy McGonigal played well when called on to do so and contributed in various ways, always hustling and Irving their best. These three girls should contribute greatly to the Spartans next year. The only sophomore on the team was Traci Wade. She was a fine rebounder with 63 defensive rebounds and offensive. She also scored 74 points for the year. The Spartans lose three fine seniors but Coach Danclson has a very strong, talented squad coming back. They could be a strong factor in the eastern B race next year. K Above- Girls B.B. showing spirit. Far left-Our three seniors on the team. Far right-Asabelle, the team's pet. The 198! season was a tough one for Baker’s J.V.’s as they ran into a lot of excellent competition. The Spartans came through the season looking pretty good despite the tough competition with an overall record of 7 wins 9 losses and a conference record of 7 wins-8 losses. The J. V. ’s were younger than most of their competition as three sophomores and two freshmen made up the starting five. Though the Spartans were young, they looked good and made a lot of progress throughout the season. With a record that was just a shade under 500, it really shows that Baker was a team to be respected. The J. V. s represented Baker well not only on the court but off the court also. Baker and Baker High School should be proud of these young ladies. As their coach, I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with every one of the Baker J. v;’s. The freshmen girls basketball team completed the second season with a record of 8 wins and 4 losses. There were 15 girls on the team at the beginning of the year. (Two members of the team, Maria Prokop and Vicki Uttke, played with the junior varsity team. Others that helped the junior varsity from time to time included Sharon Brietbach, Christy Kinsey, Molly Barefoot, and Tanya Dilworth.) Tanya Dilworth was high scorer for the year and Sharon Brietbach was high rebounder. The girls played several extremely close games. Each time, they came through to win. The team was one that had real desire to win and it showed when the game was close. The team has a lot of talent. They will be a team to watch in the next couple of years. Coach Kuch GIRLS B.B. The Spartans are looking for a fine year next year with many returning let termen and losing only five seniors. Scores The Baker Spartans finished with a 4-3 Eastern B conference record. The coaches were very pleased with the play of the team considering the loss of many key players for the season, including captains Frosty M Williams and Kevin Petersen. The offense improved steadily throughout the year. After many changes in the front line, the team developed a strong line and got some very good blocking up front from Rich Whitmore,Ken Kenitzer, John Lizer, Kent Ketterling and Rich Becker. The Spartan backHcld was led by junior running back Jim Stanton who gained over 1200 yards and also led the team in scoring. Kevin Fleckenstein, another fine running back who arrived midway through the season, helped to balance out some of the running and strengthen the back field. Fullbacks Brian Hickey and Cliff Christianson also added some Fine blocking along with consistent running for short yardage. Junior quarterback Scott Tuggle had a great year as the Spartans number one signal caller, completing 42 of 102 passes, also having some fine runs when called upon. Defensively, the Spartans were led up front by tackles Rich Becker and Kent Ketterling, each scoring well with 341 and 310 points, respectively. The two senior defensive ends, John Lizer and Brian Hickey, played consistently all season long. Backing up the front line were our four tough linebackers who scored well with Rich Whitmore with 323 points and Kenny Kenitzer with 270 points containing the inside and Kevin Fleckenstein starting in mid season with 127 points and Hartley Barefoot with 316 points containing the outside. Throughout the season, the girls participated in meets at Miles City, Colstrip, and Glendive. A meet was held in Baker hosting Miles City and Bowman. This meet gave the community a chance to see how much the team has accomplished in one year. Four girls finished the season by participating in the state meet at Glendive. JUDO Judo, meaning gentle way, is a sport invented by Master Kana in Japan in the early 1900 s. Master Kano took the best throws and ancient Jujitsu to form his modern sport. Judo is the only martial art accepted as an Olympic event. A student of Judo is continually learning the art while advancing through ranks. A Judokan, a student of Judo, begins as a white belt and through hard work earns yellow, green, brown, and finally black belts. Although Baker's Judo Club has only male members, Judo also has something for women. Judo aside from being a sport also offers its members a unique form of self defense. The Spartans Finished the season just over the 500 mark. Although a veteran club, the team play was not consistant. The Spartans finished in fourth place in the conference, and played very well at times, narrowly losing several games. Spotty” rebounding hampered the Spartans throughout the season. Junior Orville Madler led the Spartans in scoring, narrowly edging Senior forward Frosty Williams for the scoring title. Orville was also the leading rebounder and free throw percentage shooter, followed closely by Mike Losing. Senior guards Kevin Petersen, who was the Spartan point guard, and Jim O'Connor Mr. Defense and hustle for his team, contributed much to the spartan success, Petersen and Williams struggled back from injuries in their junior year and were unable to return to top form. The underclassmen who progressed well, and along with the seasoned Madler should bring success to Spartan basketball, were, Fleckenstcin, Pete Stanton, Jim Stanton, Scott Tuggle, Doug Kuslcr and Pat Zink. Fleckenstcin matured remarkably well and became a Spartan starter late in the season. Pete Stanton, an outstanding sophomore prospect was one of the Spartan leaders in all catagoreis. The speedy Jim Stanton came off the bench frequently to help the spartan defense. The JV leader, Pat Zink impressed the coaching staff with his consistency offensively. Doug Kusler was the JV “shotblocker. The MVP was Orville Madler, selected by his teammates. The conference coaches recognized Madler as an honorable mention all-conference performer and Frosty Williams was named to the second five in the Eastern B Conference. J.V. Wrestling Summary The Baker Spartans finished the year with one State Champion, Senior Rich Becker, and one sixth place finisher, Freshman Thadd O'Donnell. As a team the young Spartans improved all year long and they are looking forward to next year. Rich Becker finished 25-0 and had an excellent year for a first year wrestler. The other three state qualifiers, Chad Afrank, Thadd O'Donnell and Mark Domagala all had very successful seasons. We finished second at the Broadus Invitational, fifth in divisional and fourteenth at the State meet in Butte. We had only three seniors on the entire squad this year so next years team should be strong and experienced. Who? Me? Coach Curry and Assistant Coach Gottwig. Chew him up. Rich. The setting is Barefoot’s Bread, Butter and Beverage Bar, in beautiful downtown Baker, Montana. Hartley is hosting the committee that is planning the 20th reunion of the class of '82. Seated in a secluded corner booth are Sherrie and Dan Becker. Rich and Dan, of course, are partners in Becker’s Hide and Fur. Rich is minding the store. Jay Nyquist has just joined them, after selling a truckload of exotic calves at a fantastic price. Waitress Denise Losing comes by with complimen- tary coffee for the group, and announces that Diane Miller, of Diane's Floral Boutique, won’t be able to make the committee meeting. She and her staff, Brenda Meschke and Jan Shepherd, will be involved in the wedding of celebrity singer Tammy Dexter. Incidently, Pastor Larry Greenlee is performing the ceremony and Jeff Groshans is chauffeuring the honeymoon limosine. The former Laurie Breitbach has just joined the meeting. She had to drop off her 6 pre-schoolers at Jeanette Zachmann’s day care center because her teenagers are involved in the divisional track meet. Coach Paula Engesser and her local team are entertaining several schools today, including the Plevna Cougars, coached by Cathy Beudry. The serious business of planning the reunion will begin as soon as County Attorney Jim O’Connor arrives. He’s appearing in court today before Judge Patty Wuest. Rory Bakken, who is president of the bank in Beulah, North Dakota, is also expected. Everyone had seen on television the night before the report that John Carlson was just back from an intergalacti expedition. T.V. news corre- spondent Jenny Myhre reported that John landed safely in the Indian Ocean. Major Scott Williams of the U.S. Air Force directed the rescue mission. Missionary Nick Schueler and gospel singer Dwight Quenzer watched the splashdown from the east coast of Africa. A personal interview with John on the late night talk show, hosted by Merri Kirschten, revealed quite a bit about the class of ’82. Kevin Petersen, always a go-getter has a lucrative Volkswagen rocket and hover car business on Jupiter. Roz Young and her Cosmic Trumpets are debut- ing at Rod Kramlick’s Farout Club across the street. They will be accom- panying the new exotic dancer, Kim Lund. On his way to Saturn, John stopped at Brian Hickey’s rocket refueling 124 station. Sister Charlotte Knipp happened to be there too, buying Gator- ade for all her little orphans. They had been on a field trip to Pluto, where they visited the executive offices of Lisa Hughes, editor of “Space Girl magazine. Photographic layouts were being done by Starla Householder, and the advertising staff was headed by Dena Richmond. The latest edition of “Space Girl included a feature article on the employees of an orbiting luxury spaceship. Interviewed were Tammy Barkley, Captain; Debbie Varner, Activities Director; and Vicky Zupanik, Food and Bever- age Consultant. Speeding back toward Earth, John took time to stop at Neptune, where he consulted Orthopedic Specialist Scott Huether about a whiplash he suffered when he was nearly collided with by Kevin Braun just off Uranus. Test pilot Kevin had just exceded the speed of light! Assisting Dr. Huether was Nurse Emma Benner, who commutes all the way from Mercury. Luckily, there was still time to make the lecture at raising sheep in rare atmospheres. John had been introduced by Arme Brown, corresponding secretary at the University. After the lecture, our space traveler went to relax at his favorite health spa on Mars. Frosty Williams, an interplanetary business tycoon, was soaking his knee in the whirlpool. Rich Whitmore, the famous stand-up comic, was next door, desperately trying to make the 400 Club. Stacey Anderson was conducting her weekly aerobics dance class downstairs. The reunion committee is ready to get down to business. Sherrie reports that Connie Beebe has been kind enough to offer her lovely estate on the shores of South Sandstone for the class gathering. Gary Irgens, a prominent Marmarth rancher, will furnish the beef for the barbecue. Mike Losing, a professional basketball star, has just been selected as the overall chairman and M.C. With this awesome group, the ultimate suc- cess of the reunion is assured. Laurie Breitbach Rosalyn Young 125 SENIOR CLASS WILL I, Stacey Anderson, will 5 inches of my height to Teresa Heiser.
