Reverend Lentz then gave the Benediction followed by the recessional of the graduates. With the end of graduation there were many tears and smiles. Some happy to be done and some quite sad to leave. We started the season slowly, but by mid-season we began to play some very competitive basketball. In that stretch we won two games and played some fine ball in a losing effort in five other games. It began to look like we might play the role of a spoiler by tournament time, but the experience of the other teams began to take its toll on the young Spartan team as we entered the final weeks of the season. In the tournament the Spartans played inspiring basketball even though they lost their first two games. The young Spartan team showed great hustle, desire, and determination to win. If this attitude prevails through the summer and into next fall, the Spartans, will be a force to be reckoned with. Record - 3 wins 14 losses Varsity In Action Upper left: Get off my back. Summary The tally of games won and lost this season is definitely not an indication of future seasons from these girls. Though there were four more losses than wins, the J.V. 's improved a great deal over last year. They have a tremendous amount of potential which needs to be and will be developed. The J.V.'s strong points are defense, hustle, and attitude. The girls ran the full court press excellently and hustled all the time, both on offense and defense. It was not a winning season but the girls continued to work hard and had a good attitude. Some of the J.V. 's will be playing varsity ball next year, but with some fine freshmen and the returning J.V.'s, a strong and promising season is in the making for next basketball season. Season Summary By Coach Harold Schwan The Baker Spartans experienced a disappointing season in 1978. After a strong start, injuries plagued the Spartans all season. Early in the season, quarterback Doug Vanderpan sustained a shoulder injury that prolonged throughout the campaign. Dale McCamish was also hurt early for the entire season. Both starting guards were hampered with ankle injuries along with periodic problems with several other players. In early competition, the Spartans dropped close encounters to Miles City and Sidney; two games that should have been in the ' 'win'' column. From there it wras downhill as the Spartans w ere able to win only over the Poplar Indians in our homecoming game. Defensively, the team played well, and generally won the battle at the line of scrimmage, but inconsistancy in the secondary hurt their opportunities for victory. Offensively, the ground attack wras solid, but inexperience at quarterback and receiving positions allowed the opponents to concentrate on our running attack. Individually, we had some excellent performances, senior tackle Bob Ownes, had an outstanding season in leading the defensive line. He got great support from Rick Livesey, Tim Buchanan, Gary Wrade, one of the outstanding football players in the conference, was consistant wherever he played. In the secondary, Kevin Miller, twice all- conference, and Russell Stoddard led the team along with safety Dave Bowiand. Allon Fleckenstein, a younger player, had several fine efforts. Offensively, Kevin Miller w-as the w'ork horse, gaining the most yards, with excellent support from Russ Stoddard, Allon Fleckenstein, Dave Bowiand, and Shane Farstveet. On the line, center Rick Livesey, Gary Wade, and Bob Owens were consistent. Even though losing, the Spartans w'ere 1 'in the ballgame'' most of the games. We will graduate a fine group of seniors but next season will return 21 lettermen and should have a fine year in football. 34 1978 Senior Lettermen Sitting: Wade Jacobsen, Gary Wade, Rick Livesey, Bob Owens, Kevin Miller Standing: Dave Bowland, Tim Buchanon, Russell Stoddard, Jim Mahon. Monday night started out the week with the Junior Varsity Football playing Bowman here. Tuesday was sign and sucker day and that night the girls basketball team played Beach here. Wednesday was dress-up day and the junior high football team playing Sacred Heart here after school. That evening coronation was held with Jana Mueller and Wade Jacobsen becoming the royalty. Thursday was jersey and Spartan day with the option of shorts and boots, followed by spirit night in the evening. All of the classes . ave a skit - Seniors, Mock Drill Team; juniors, radio station (DEAD); Sophomores, Sophomores Are Behind You; Freshman, Crowing Up With Football; and some of the faculty also gave skits. The drill team also performed. After all the spirit in the gym, everyone moved their spirit out to the bonfire. When everyone left the bonfire, some of the seniors had a hot dog and marshmallow roast. The vanity cheerleaders went out and whitewashed on the streets. Friday was maroon and gold day and that night was the homecoming game with the Poplar Indians. We w on - the score being: 6 to 3. After the game was a homecoming victory dance. Summary Of Season—Tournament Action After narrowly missing a state tournament berth last season, the Baker Spartans did not do w'ell in the 1978-79 campaign. Lack of size and experience contributed heavily to the Spartans downfall, their last season in Class A ranks. Senior captains: Gary Wade, a 6'2 1 2'' forward and Wade Jacobson, a 6 1 ' forward, were the teams leading scorers and rebounders. Gary led the Spartans to their victories and also contributed in the games in which the Spartans almost upset Glasgow and Sidney. Gary averaged 15 points per contest and better than 10 rebounds. After early season problems, Wade Jacobson developed into one of the finest shooters in the Eastern A Division. He ended his high school career with a 25 point second half performance in a narrow loss to the Poplar Indians in the tournament. Seniors Kevin Miller and Dave Bowland played well. Miller was one of the Spartans most valuable players as he played both forward and guard and performed well whenever called upon. Dave was injured most of the season. The coaching staff believed losing Dave was a key loss and took away effectiveness at the guard positions. The underclassmen included: Shane Farstveet, a strong rebounding junior center; Doug Vanderpan, our defensive leader; Dale McCamish, also injured part of the season and not totally effective throughout; Scott Townsend, a most talented sophomore who was third in scoring; and Lester Straub, Mike Herbst, Craig Pinnow, Tom Breitbach, Andy Wade, Jeff Varner, and Forst Eichhorn, who played the J.V. schedule hard and were in almost every game. Though they lost games on the floor, we commend them because they are winners just by competing. Wre look forward to an excellent season in 1979-80. Wre return eight lettermen and have several promising freshman and sophomores. Basketball is on the wfay up and the future looks bright for the Baker Spartans. Getting Ready For The... IN MEMORIAM Cynthia Renee Mayhall, Junior Her friends knew her as Renee. She was shy but after she got to know you she was talkative. She didn't talk much about herself; she always seemed more interested in what you were doing. Renee was hardly ever seen without a smile on her face. We regret the loss of Renee through a car accident on February 13, 1978. Her absence will be felt in the classrooms and halls of BHS. TO RENEE She always had a smile Whenever she1 d pass you by, Some knew her to be talkative And others - to be shy. She seemed so ready to listen, To whatever you had to say, And now she's gone to Heaven The Lord took her away. She had a unique relationship With God and all her friends. And whenever you were near her You could feel the warmth she'd send. She was always her very own person In her very own special way. Now a part of her has left us But a part will always stay. In this world God has a purpose For everything He does. Sometimes we just can't understand Why He takes die ones we love. Roxi Harris What My Family Means to Me ? My family means having somebody Who loves you, Having someone to share my love with, Having someone to go home to, Having someone who really cares about you, That's what my family means to me.
