Miss Linda Meyer. Miss Meyer is Baker's finest artist who has traveled throughout Europe because of her many talents in art. Besides being a teacher, she has been a fantastic cheer leading sponsor and takes part in all activities such as Homecoming Week, Tournament Week, and the Art Festival. She promoted the murals on the walls in our school which add color and excitement to our school days. She has also done covers for many different programs. We will remember her through the years and never forget her friendly smile and warm personality. As Seniors, students of Baker High School, and the com- munity, we would like to express our thanks for all you have done for us. The Baker Spartan Football team opened the 1977 season with a win over Bowman by a score of 24-6. Gaining confidence, the Spartans lost a close 6-0 squeaker to the Sidney Eagles. After an upset loss to Poplar, the Spartans defeated the Wolf Point Wolves, a Spartan Homecoming Victory, The Spartans were defeated at Glasgow and by champion Glendive on the road before closing the season with a close game losing late in the game to the Miles City Cowboys, Gresh Tuggle led the Spartan ground attack, rushing for over 400 yd| Gresh was also the scoring leader. Doug Vander- pan followed Tuggle in both departments. Mitch was the leading receiver and one of the best punters in the Eastern Division. Bill Zupanik, Royal Duneman, Bob Owens, Jim Mahon, and Rick Livesey did the blocking for the backs. Defensively, Royal Duneman, Bob Owens, Mitch Anderson, and Larry Dahl anchored the line, with Bill Zupanik, Kimbal Thompson also the fullback, and Dave Meschke also a running back doing the linebacking. Our defensive secondary allowed the fewest yards passing in the Division. Bill Zupanik, Mitch Anderson and Kevin Miller were second team All-Conference, with Doug Vander- pan and Mitch Anderson and Royal Duneman honorable mention. Now here's the plan, Kimbal. Inconsistency seemed to be the main problem, as the Frosh played their better games against Junior Varsity teams and let down against opposing Freshman. As the final scores show all the games were close, and the record might easily have been 3-1 or 4-0 with a few breaks and more determination. The Spartans defeated every team in the Eastern A Division at least once, with the exception of the Glen- dive Red Devils. Baker won their own invitational tourna- ment in mid-December, but did not play well until shortly after the Christmas holidays. The Baker team finished fourth in confer- ence standings for the season. In tournament action the Spartans won three of four games before losing to Miles City in the Challenge game. Junior Class Play Twelve Angry Men Synopsis Twelve Angry Men was a play that required high drama in order to be effective. In the play, a man has just undergone trial for murder and the jury is left with the alt important decision: innocent or guilty. With a man's life in the balance the jury searches for the meaning of a reasonable doubt. The jury see-saws back and forth being polarized by the words and actions of various jurors, until at last a decision is reached. 122 r ■ Upper [eft: Gary Wade arguing a point. The veteran performers were determined to see prestige become a part of the club. We began slowly but gained strength as the season pro- gressed. The team took 1st place in the Class A Division at the Garfield County High School Invitational Meet. At the Forsyth meet the Spartans doubled the score of the nearest competitor. Each meet the team brought home more victories until the Divisional where only Glendive accumulated more class A points. This year was a perfect ending for the Senior actor-actresses and a perfect beginning for the new team members which will make up the nucleus for future Drama teams. 126 127 Just Passin’ Through They point out the way to me and you As we (earn, we laugh, and study too. Through good times and bad, they're always there They encourage and support us and show us they care. We thank them for what they've done for us all The reading and writing, laughs in study hall We thank them for doing the best they can do. As the classes of B.H.S. are 'Just Passin1 Through. Superintendent’s Message To the Senior class of 1978, I issue this challenge! Work hard, for nothing of any consequence can be obtained without honest effort or toil. Respect and love all humans no matter what their race, creed or ethnic origin -or only by being capable of love and respect are we in turn loved and respected. Put the most into and get the most out of very opportunity in life for an opportunity once lost may never be regained. Do what you know to be honest and right for yourself and it will usually turn out to be right for all concerned. Finally enjoy life to its fullest, be happy and optimistic because if you succeed in all else and are unhappy or miserable, life will have been a failure. I wish success to each of you in full measure. May your paths always be downhill and wind always at your back. HARRY D. Middle School Play — “Bachelor Of The Year’’ The annual 8th Grade one-act play, Bach- elor of the Year, by Joseph Baldwin was presented to the Middle School and the 5th and 6th grades. The setting of the story was Principal Thomas Caldwell's office. The plot centers around Principal Caldwell being elected bachelor of the year—a great honor—poor man! The superintendent of schools decides our bachelor should marry, and he favors having women do the proposing. ■ A queenly drama teacher proposes, followed by a brisk, business-like Home Ec teacher, and also the teacher of girls' Physical Education. Mr. Caldwell believes he turned them all down tactfully; but they think otherwise, and each of them announces her engage- ment! They all decend on Mr. Caldwell. He beats them to the punch by having his pretty secretary announce their own secret engagement. The wrathful trio stalkout, leaving Mr. Caldwell safe but glumly wishing he were engaged to the secretary. In a climatic finish, in which the secretary quits her job and leaves, Mr. Caldwell, by phone, convinces her to return and become his wife. 7th Grade Boys Basketball The 7th Grade basketball team showed a great deal of improve- ment during this year, especially in the area of teamwork. After a slow start, the players steadily improved and were able to play a controlled offense. Defense was the big question mark during the season. The highlight for everyone was coming back from a 6-27 defeat by Miles City to beat them by a 23-19 score. Overall the season ended with 7 wins and 2 losses. Cast Of Characters Nick Schueler - Thomas Caldwell Laurie Breitbach - Alice Michaels (his secretary) Janae Anderson - Miss Evans (teacher of dramatics) Rosalyn Young - Miss Gustafson (teacher of Home Ec) Dena Ehret - Miss Baumgartner (teacher of girls Physical Education) Rory Bakken - James McClendon (Sup't. of Schools) Starla Householder - Miss Uleet (reporter from Register) Kim Lund - Sanda Sue (a senior) John Hoke - R onny Bronkuski (a pro foot- ball player) 8th Grade Boys Basketball Though the 8th Grades' season did not look very good (3-8) the playe rs did improve fundamentally and they look very promising for the upcoming years. With the aid of the fine coaching staff we have at the high school level, these boys will produce winning teams and seasons in the future. M.S. Boys And Girls Track The 1978 Track season for Baker Middle School was hampered by much rain. The season included track meets at Miles City, Glen- dive, Beach, Bowman (2), and one home meet. As a team we placed well at all the meets and won 8 trophies. There were several new track records set. 144 Middle School Girls Track First row: Carol Rath, Julie Bruha, Janice Stoddard, Kay Dixon, Kathy McGonigal, Kim Lund, Second row: Vicky Zupanik, Anita Bowland, Bev Burghduff, Valerie Losing, Lori Breitbach, Kim Gookin, Shelly Barefoot, Tami Barkley, Paul Engesser, Natalie Ferrel, Third row: Donna O'Connor, Maxine Losing, Teri Di (worth, Janae Anderson, Tracy Rustad, Lynn Wolenetz, Sharlene Beckers, Starla Householder, Miss Jones, Mrs, Steward.
