The 1976 football season was a rebuilding one for the Spartans. With only four or five starters back, and the Spartans competing in the toughest league in the State, it was a long season. However, the outlook for the future is bright. With fifteen starters and seventeen letterman returning, we are going to be tough. The Spartans did have their bright spots this season winning their first game in two years and then recording their first shutout ever in Class A when they beat the W'olf Point Wolves 6-0. The Spartan defense proved to be one of the toughest in the conference. Led by all-conference selections, Royal Duneman and Bill Zupanik (both returning next year), the Spartans were able to hold their opponents. The Spartan defense should be the toughest in the league next year. On offense the Spartans return 8 starters including two freshman at wingback. Injuries hurt the Spartans during the entire season. We had to rely on young inexperienced kids which hurt us. But the experience they gained this year will prove valuable for next season. Season Summary of Middle School Sports The Baker Middle School 'ootball team completed a perfect 5-0 season. Baker 18 Circle 0 Baker 22 Glendive 6 Baker 14 Bowm an 0 Baker 22 Miles City 12 Baker 46 Beach 0 Seventh and 8th Grade Girls Basketball squads gained much needed experience throughout the season that will help them next year. The coaches made it a point to play every girl at least a quarter of every game. This was a great morale booster as it gave all girls an opportunity to learn. WRESTLING: The team participated in 4 tournaments --finishing 3rd in Bowman; 1st at Baker; 2nd at Dickinson; and 2nd at Forsyth. During tournament competition, 8 different wrestlers won a total of 22 tournament championships. Baker defeated 16 dif- ferent teams in tournaments. In a dual meet with Bowman, Baker won 5 matches and lost 9. Against Miles City, Baker won 15 and lost 2. The total team match record was 124 wins and 65 losses. The Baker Trojan 8th Grade squad went through the last season marred by illness and 4 cancellations to finish the season at 5-4, Although the Trojans suffered offensive problems, defensively they permitted no team to score more than 41 points in any game. The team was blessed with some tall boys and some natural athletes. With another year of growth and practice, they will make fine prospects for a winning Freshman squad in 1977- 78. The 7th Grade basketball squad started the season slowly, but finished it in somewhat of a flurry. Losing their first 4 games, the Trojans won 3 of the last 5 to finish the season with a respectable record. Proof of their improvement was evident in the last game as they defeated Ekalaka by 9 after losing to them by 5 in their second game of the season. The Baker Middle School Boys track team saw limited action this season due to the field being worked on. In two of the meets tire squad participated in, both squads came in 4th at Miles City and the combined team placed second at a meet in Plevna. We had 4 track meets this year. In Miles City the 8th grade placed 4th out of 6 teams, the 7th placed 6th. In Plevna, the 7th and 8th were combined and placed 2nd out of 5 teams. The Bowman track meet had 12 towns and we placed 4th for the 8th grade and 6th for the 7th grade. In Dickinson 2 girls placed and our mile relay placed. 123 Middle School Girls Track Has Big Turnout Front Row--Kimberly Lund, Tamera Barkley, Paula Engesser, Shannon Ueker, Denise Losing, 2nd Row- Linda Christianson, DeAnna Eyre, Sandy Engesser, Shannon Granat, Carol O'Connor, Patricia Becker, Starla Householder, Joyce Ferrel, Ronda Pfeifle, Laurie Breitbach, Back Row-Brenda Heiser, Barbara Mahon, Cheri Heron, Marci Celander, JaNae Anderson, Rhonda Amell, Cheri Jacobsen, Gay Brocket.
