ADMINISTRATION FACULTY Superintendent A mi imi „ 11 ess age Next year being the year of the bicentennial of the American Revolution puts one in a reflective mood. In fact, it puts one in a bireflective mood. We must assess future goals in terms of past happenings in order that the second two hundred years be as fruitful as the first two hundred. The key to making the second bicentennial as good and better than the first can only be achieved through the resolve and purpose of an enlightened society of which you are an important part. It is important when thinking in terms of future” that the same optimism and singular purpose empitomized by out ancestors be embodied in our endeavors. Never let pessimism, cynicism or negativism become the ruling factor in your life. Remember the future holds much for you. Harry D. REDISKE MOKKOW’S ACS MA KD WA K8 23 South Main Phone 778-2510 World’s Jair The first night of the tour was spent in Butte. While there we all jour- neyed up a half mile hill to Berkeley Pit, the richest hill on earth. After viewing the pit and crawling in the $14,000 tire which stands 14 feet, we boarded the bus and headed back to the church for our first nights sleep. Saturday a.m. began with 7:00 reville and French toast and juice for all. After loading the bus, we headed up to Berkeley Pit for one last look and then on to Coeur d' Alene. We stopped in Superior for a swim and a picnic lunch. When we arrived in Coeur d1 Alene, we were directed to our sleeping quarters, unloaded the bus, and set up for a 3 hour rehearsal in the parking lot. Performance Day began at 6:00 with 60 girls 'trying' to share 4 sinks! Everything was loaded onto the bus, breakfast in the parking lot, and then Church Call was made. Pastor Barnard led the Protestant com- munity while the Roman Catholics took the bus to a Church blocks away. We were all loaded by 9:00 and on our way to Expo '74! The full band gave two performances at the International Amphitheatre, which looks onto the Spokane River. The wind ensemble also gave two performances at the Alberta Theatre. When the last performance at 6:00 was over, everyone changed and went to see the sights. The bus was loaded by 11:30 and on its way back to Coeur d1 Alene. By 1:30—15 minutes after arriving—we all had retrieved our suitcases and sleeping bags from storage and were fast asleep. 116 As you walked into the U.S. Pavil- ion, you were greeted with this pile of junk. All the materials were re- cyclable. The motto of our pavilion was, The earth doesn't belong to man, man belongs to the earth. A gigantic screen also welcomed the crowd which stood 90 feet tall just as wide, brought realism that caused your stomach to turn as you're beginning an airplane trip and dropped down into the Grand Can- yon. The entire movie was so real, you actually believed you were in the plane! Days four and five were spent at Expo seeing all the sights and par- taking in the Food Fair. Foods from all over the world were fea- tured here. Always to be seen was a band member in a blue T-shirt with a fried banana, an Italian submarine, or beef on a gamboo shoot. Fire- works were displayed each night over the Spokane River reminding us we had 2 hours left to venture in- to the pavilions, visit the Food Fair or go to the carnival. Day six is one we all remember. The blue bus broke down! The red bus went on ahead and when it dropped off its load of kids in Cranbrook, headed back to get the load of band members from the blue bus. Re- pairs would take days, so another bus had to be rented to transport all of us to Ft. Steele. The ensemble played a concert in the bandstand and then played in a parade through mainstreet. We spent the afternoon at the Radium Hot Springs. After our swim, we headed for Banff, where we gave a two hour concert in the park. We were able to go eat supper following the concert. To- night was our one and only night of sleeping in a bed and did it feel good! 117 We were allowed to sleep-in until 10:00 today but it looks like some were still tired! We went shopping and then everyone ventured up to the Gondola lift. The sky lift rose almost 3,000 feet in 7 minutes! The loading crew had to move all of the suitcases, sleeping bags, and horns off the rented bus and onto the blue bus which had finally been repaired. The two buses pulled out from Banff about 7:00 and we were on our way to Calgary. We arrived there about 2 hours later, furnished with an escort to take us to the school where we would stay. They provided us with foam mattres- ses, which is a great improvement over cement floors! The next morn- ing, we dressed in our band uniforms for a parade. After the parade, we played for a concert at the Calgary Brewery, and then everyone took ad- vantage of the pool near by. That night we all went to the Chuck- wagon Races. The loading crew was always busy loading and unloading the bus filled with uniforms, hats, and horns. Sunday afternoon, we went to the Calgary Zoo. So many different ani- mals were there--with each band member trying to figure out a way to bring one home. 118 Parade is aver— We ’re headed home! Sunday night we played for the Elks Barbecue. When intermission was taken, the band members neatly piled their instruments and rushed for the food li ne. We reassembled and played for the group again and then it was off to the planetarium, which served to be great sleeping quarters. When we got back to the school everyone settled down in anticipation for tomorrows parade. Hamburgers and French fries were delivered for those who complained of being hungry. End of another day... Parade Day began at 5:00, with the girls trying to get their hair in stockings and everyone looking for this and that. The parade started about 9:00, lasting about an hour and a half. We had all afternoon to go shopping. After supper, we toured the Calgary Tower. Everyone was up until 1:00 talking, packing suit- cases, having pillow fights, and awaiting the moment we boarded the bus to go home! Tuesday morning found everyone ready for our trip home. We stayed in Glasgow that night, where peep- ing toms were numerous at our windows! Wednesday morning, our 12th day of being gone and having traveled over 2200 miles, brought us home again! Our tour was over, a fantastic adventure, which everyone is sti 11 reliving, and laughing over the million and one little things that took place and marveling that it all really did happen! 119
