1973 SPARTAN BAKER HIGH SCHOOL BAKER, MONTANA IN MEMORY OF The graduating Class of 1973 respectfully dedicates the 1973 Spartan to Walter William Luetkens. Mr. Luetkens was a part of Baker High School, serving many years as Coach and Athletic Director and always as a teacher, from 1947 until his retirement in March, 1973. To think of World Geography, Civics, or Driver's Training was to think of Mr. Luetkens. The school and community mourned his death on April 11, 1973. When Mr. Luetkens died, Baker High School lost someone who could never be replaced, but who will always be remembered. It is with fond memories that W'e the seniors of 1973 dedicate our annual to Walter William Luetkens. ■Mte VA LEDICTORIA N SAL VTA TORI A N Debbie Knutson Joel Alexander HONOR PLAQUE AWARD Debbie Knutson BEST CITIZEN A WARD LuRae Bechtold TOP Debbie Knutson Joel Alexander Beth Chester Marilyn Schell Valerie Duppler Harold Miller TEN Cheryll Straub Tina Barnard Paula Straub Rena Beach Lynn Post 6 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Doug Dahl, Treasurer; Rodney Breitbach, Secretary; Harold Miller, President; Cheryll Straub, Student Council Representative; Larry Kusler, Vice-President. Mrs. Savage (Jeanne Huntley) had been left ten million dollars by her husband, and wanted to make the best use of it, in spite of the efforts of her grown-up stepchildren (Gerald Madler, Keith Losing, Lisa Wiman) to get their hands on it. These latter, knowing that the widow's wealth is now in negotiable securities, and seeing they cannot get hold of it, commit her to a sanatorium hoping to bring her to her senses. But Mrs Savage is deter- mined to establish a fund to help others realize their hopes and dreams. In the sanatorium she meets various social mis- fits (Beryl Bechtold, Vic Callen, Barb Bermel, Todd Overton, Becky Jensen) who just cannot ad- just themselves to life, people who need the help Mrs. Savage can provide. In getting to know them, she realizes that she will find happiness with them, and plans to spend the rest of her life as one of them. But when the doctor tells her there is no reason why she should remain, she hesitates to go out into a hard world where people seem ready to do any- thing for money. Her new friends are interested in HER, not in her money. The self-seeking stepchildren are driven to dis- traction by their vain efforts to browbeat Mrs. Savage, but she preserves her equanimity and leads them a merry chase. At last her friends conspire to get rid of the in- laws, and through their simple belief in the justice of her cause, they enable Mrs. Savage to carry out her plans. The last scene, a farewell party, was a de- lightful fantasy where each guest in the sanatorium realizes at last some hopeless dream for something he was never able to realize. The dominant mood was high comedy, and the audience was ;eft with a feeling that the neglected virtues of kindness and affection have not been entirely lost in a world that seems motivated at times only by greed and dishonesty. Staff members at the sanatorium were Ross Shepherd (Dr. Emmett) and Miranda DeGrand (Miss Wilhelmina). The play was directed by Miss Marcia Prather. In her 12 years of instruction as an art teacher and a French teacher, she enjoyed working and teaching the young people and everyone liked and appreciated her very much. As advisor of the French Club, she gave a French feeling to all her students. She helped her students plan the yearly French Club Banquet which was always a success with the townspeople. As an Art teacher she taught some very creative students of whom she was very proud. She gave many fine art shows for public viewing which were very beautiful and successful. S UP ER INTENDENT And now the path gets steeper but the climb has just begun is the motto of the Class of 1973, Baker High School, Baker, Montana. It is doubtful that a better motto could have been selected by the members of the Senior Class. They have identified the problem early in their pursuit of their personal goals. Very soon they will find that the foundation they have been working on, their formal education, will determine the rate of effort required in meet- ing and surmounting the obstacles they will en- counter along the pathway of life. It has been said that work is the crab grass in the lawn of life and you may be sure that your work will always be neat- ly trimmed as a direct result of your personal ef- forts. My sincere, best wishes to the Class of 1973. D. M. Hartwick Superintendent SCHOOL BOARD BACK: Russell Culver, Ashley Stanhope, Charles Woodson, A1 Grenstiner, Rex Farstveet.
