I v SPA RTAN 1 Foreword Let us pause in the midst of war and world crisis to walk again the paths of achieve- ment, fun, beauty, skill, and adventure of the 1970 school year. We hope that you will relive tills past year as we have tried to tell it in this annual. We wish to thank our sponsor, Mr. Heron and the 1971 SPARTAN staff for their many hours of help they have given us to make this annual a success. As Co-editors, we hope that you find the SPARTAN full of happy memories and cherished moments. 2 Dedication We, the class of 1970 and the student body of Baker High School, dedicate the '70 SPARTAN to Mr. Ben Post in recognition of his 9 years of service to Baker Schools. Ben has shown seem- ingly unflagging interest and enthusiasm for our school and our students. He rises much earlier than most students and is at school long after most have gone home to ensure that we will have a healthy and pleasant atmosphere in which to work. For this service beyond the call of duty , we thank you, Ben Post, and dedicate to you this SPARTAN. 3 Board of Education Dr. Robert Weeks Pete Molenda Tom Overton Not Pictured Rushmore Hall Rusell Culver Charles Madler Francis Madler Ernest Bechtold Edgar Justesen As the class of '70 heads into the decade of the '70's, we pause to thank the Board of Education for the many hours of work that they do for the betterment of our schools. Much of the work that they do is behind the scenes. But it is through their tireless efforts that the school system is what it is today. 4 Superintendent's Message The amount of information to be learned in all fields doubled from the birth of Christ to 1750, doubled again from 1751 to 1900, doubled again from 1901 to 1950 and has doubled again from 1950 to the present. More change has taken place in the last 50 years than took place in all previous time since the world was created. Education for change is no longer an elec- tive, it's an absolute necessity. And yet, one of the most difficult jobs is that of explaining that change, and why schools today ain't what they used to be. Our young people must be willing to change on short notice and therefore learn to enjoy and anticipate change instead of fearing it. For this role we hope Baker High School has contributed to the self-image and confidence of each student to cope with what lies ahead. My best wishes to our 86 graduates, our yearbook staff and their sponsor Mr. Heron and our fine Faculty and Student Body. It has been a privilege to be the administrator of the Baker School System. a J- 6 Principal L. Fredric Bruggeman Vice-Principal Gary Tuggle This is the age of the computer - a device that with proper programming can give in seconds answers man would have to work hours to get. This is also the age of standardized merchandise ... a standard for everything and everything up to standard. How then can you as an individual compete successfully with other individuals in the mechan- I ized age? The answer lies in courtesy which is the mark of a lady or gentleman. It costs nothing but it can take you to the top. Having it will set you apart from others. Not having it puts you in I the same category with the run of the mill. It is so easy to follow the rule ol doing unto others as you would others do to you. That is courtesy - another name for politeness. My best wishes follow you as you go Out of School Life into Life's School . BAKER SPARTANS 69 FOOTBALL SEASON The Baker Spartans started the 1969 season showing the power that they were capable of. On the very first play from scrimmage, we scored a touchdown against Bowman and went on to beat them 38-6. After this win, we beat Poplar, Circle, Scobey, Fairview, Plentywood, Forsyth, and Broadus. The only close game was the Circle game, which we won 8-6. By beating Broadus, we won the Conference Championship and were eligible to play in a post-season division championship game. November 1st was the date of the playoff game between Baker and Roundup and the place was the Dust Bowl in Baker. In a hardfought game, Roundup defeated Baker 24-20. The margin of victory was two extra point attempts missed by Baker. We had concluded a fine season for a Baker team that showed real teamwork and the efforts of our fine coaches.
