THE 1968 SPARTAN BAKER HIGH SCHOOL BAKER, MONTANA 1 FOREWORD Carefully gathered within these pages are our treasured memories of classmates, teachers, activi- ties, and all that has been a part of our active school days. We have tried to provide you with a deeper understanding oi the true character of Baker High School and of the people with whom this book is concerned. It has required the co-operation of students, staff, and those who have contributed their support through advertisements. We wish to thank you who have helped us; especially our sponsor, Mr. Bender, who has spent many hours with us working to make our 1968 Spartan a success. To future graduates, may it present a challenge to do your best work... never to abandon your search for knowledge and truth. Now we present to you the 1968 Spartan, may it always bring you the fondest memories. With many a smile But never a tear We hope you'll agree It's been a great year! — E. Gilbert Diane Schell Co-Editor Dorothy Susa Editor 2 Left to Right: Tom Overton, Bob Anderson, Rushmore Hall, Edgar Justesen, Russell Culver, Walt Ehman, Ernest Bechtold, Charles Madler. Not Pictured: Francis Madler, Dale Olson-School Clerk Pausing at the intersection, we see the stop and go lights beaming down on us. These lights are the nine people who compose the Board of Education for School Dis- trict 12. Although little known to most students, the school board is faced with the important tasks of forming school policies, keeping the school provided with necessary equipment and helping the school to run smoothly. We owe our sincerest thanks to these people who devote much of their time and energy to improving our school. DEDICATION We, the members of the Class of 1968, wish to ex- press our appreciation and gratitude to Mr. Bender who has been working with the commercial students at Baker High School for the past eight years. Through Mr. Bender's guidance and help, many of our gradu- ates have gone on to successful business careers. Be- cause we want to show the gratitude of Baker High School to one who has always acted with friendship and tolerance toward ail, we, the Spartan Staff of 1968, affectionately dedicate our yearbook to you, Mr. Larry Bender u SUPERINTENDENT Many ideas have been and will be increasingly in conflict. This conflict will be influenced particularly by the greater proportion of the young, while leadership control still will be in the hands of the older population. The struggle between the conservative and the progressive approach will further complicate value choices. For education this conflict will require careful selection of all that is good from the past and present and the equally careful use of progressive inventions and ideas proven under simulated conditions from the future. The task of guiding the growth of the young from birth to adulthood is, in the final analysis, a function of the total community. It requires the resources of the local community, state, and nation and the co-operative planning and work of every responsible agency. Toward this end all of us in Baker are dedicated to provide the kind of atmosphere for learning and growth of character that will graduate young people from our schools as responsible, dedicated, and loyal American citizens. Mr. James Hoffman Recently I read a short article entitled Be a Co-operator which contained some good ideas that I would like to pass on to you. Since the word co-operate” means to work together, the author suggested that we co-operate: With ourselves - maintain our bodies in good health, and exercise our minds as well as our muscles. With our family,, - be on time, do our part and be agreeable. In school - work with, not against teachers and fellow-students in order to be successful. With friends and neighbors - think and speak well of people we know, or don't think and speak of them at all. With our city - study both sides of any controversy. With our nation - make up our minds from facts, not from somebody's opinions. With those who are working now to make this world a better place today and in the years to come. This type of togetherness should make us easier to live with and life easier for us to live! Mr. L. As the halls grow dim and the classrooms quiet, we hope this book will bring back memories of this year and hold this school forever in your memory. AUTOGRAPHS 113 AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS
