Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1965 volume: “
We pause 'mid the wonders of Life And the magic of Science, To bring forth on these pages The golden moments of time Just past. It is our wish to walk again The paths of achievement, fun, Beauty and skill; To walk the winter trails and Enjoy the summer sun. We set them all before You — Come walk with us! Tami Stenerson Carter Christiansen I We. the Seniors of 1965, dedicate the “Spartan' to Mr. Thomas McGonigal. who for the past fifteen years has been an inspiration and guiding hand to the stu- dents of Baker High School. The loyalty and devotion that he has shown the stu- dents in their times of despair have endeared him to all of us. It is with the highest admiration and greatest respect that we make this dedication. 2 SUPERINTENDENT A yearbook justifies itself in being a permanent record of a certain memorable period in our lives. Later on we may look at it again and remember. It is a compilation of events in a form which repre- sents our school, with at least enough completeness to suggest the rest. It brings to our attention how very wide the range of activity our school has. It sharpens the reali- zation that it is impossible for each of us to participate in everything. As we take this book in retrospect at the year we have just spent, those things in which we have personally participated will bring us the richest memories, and those students who have participated in the most, will find the fullest meaning in this book. This has been a very satisfying year, I am sure, for all of us. Few persons, except those who are on the Spartan Staff realize all the work that goes into the pro- duction of our annual. I extend my compliments to Mr. Bender, yearbook advisor, his student staff and our fine student body for a task well done. PRINCIPAL A cartoon may be a fine teaching aid . . . it picto- rially gets to the heart of a situation. I am reminded of one which showed a woman standing in a kitchen piled high with unwashed dishes, saying, I hate washing dishes so I let them accumulate. Someday it’s going to be a problem. How many of us are guilty of doing just that . . . letting something accumulate until it becomes a prob- lem? This often applies to daily school work. At the end of the six weeks we try frantically to get enough dishes washed” to carry us through. However, this cartoon has a more farreaching impli- cation. 1 am thinking of the little faults that we allow to pile up. Faults like using poor English, being dis- courteous, cheating a little, disrespect of private and pub- lic property, etc. These faults, if continued unchecked, settle into bad habits. I admonish you, don't let your faults pile up until they become a problem that you will have to face some day ... a problem which may re- quire a high payment in time, money, and reputation. Memories and good times past. Time has flown, school days have quickly passed by, But we're sure, we'll ne'er forget All our problems, joys at Baker High, As we leave, we part with regret. Goodbye, classmates, underclassmen, goodbye Faculty and friends, it's no lie We will miss you all, but now and then We’ll meet again. Never thought this day would come so quickly. We're alumni, man alive! Best of luck in all your undertakings From our class of '65. prophetat Upon enteriiig the gypsy's tent we handed her our $1 so that we could see the future. As we gaze into the crystal ball we see Paulina Ackerman running the Dahlman Motel, inherited from her parents. As she sits looking out the window thinking about Bradley Bruce's new inven- tion, electric bedmakers, Rick Bowen flies in with his manager, Craig Hunter, on his new Areo Cadillac en route to his next professional football game. As Lynn Cox and Elaine Sch- weigert, who are now famous fashion designers, stop in to see Paulina they smash into Rick's car. Mike Steffes, Secretary of State, runs out to see what has happened. He calls the chief of police. Billy Defferding who is on duty comes to the scene of the accident. They are taken before police magistrate, Tom Stenglein. Lynn and Elaine call their lawyers who are members of the Hepperle and Rost law firm. The Williams-Susa Insurance Agency pays for damages and the case is closed. As the crystal ball fogs over we pay another dollar for another view. We see the Scott Memorial Hospital which was started as result of the large donation from oii-tycoon, Fred Scott. Here Patty Bertsch is getting a foot operation. Her doctor is Wayne Sonsalla and nurses are Jo- Ann Blaser and Lucy Greenlee. As we leave the hospital we see Cindy Rindy sitting at the desk, and find that she is a private secretary to the now-famous brain surgeon. Carter Christainsen. Across the street from the hospital we notice lights flashing the name of the famous trumpet player, Ed Lawler. The backing band for Ed consists of our old friends, John Kaderavek, Sharon Kollman, and Tami Stenerson. Sandy Karch, who just returned from recording her first record in Hollywood is also appearing with Ed. Her accompanist is Brenda Olson. The club where they are appearing is the Esquire and is jointly owned by Sharon Brown, Judy Kollman, and Margie Peterson. As we give the gypsy some more money, there appears a dude ranch owned by Rick Stark, Keith Rustad, and Gary Rusley. They have Karen Fost managing the restaurant and Linda Jordan as head waitress. One of their guests is the professional basketball player, Ed Hoem, with him is Jody Nelson. Jody is known all around the world for breaking the world record in the mile. Nancy Striebel, Jean Leonard, and Joyce Heyen have met here for riding lessons for their com- ing appearance on Bonanza. Peggy Bickle will be their riding instructor. Paul Chapelle and Ray Pruett, who are now famous chemists have come to do some research on how to make sage- brush bloom. The crystal ball now takes us to the Minneapolis Speedway where Alvin Madler is racing his latest model. His strongest competitor is Russell McIntyre. James Crawford is Alvin's mechanic and Dennis Duffield is Russell’s. Robert Justesen has just built the new $50 million race track which was designed by DiAnn Spriggs. Mauve Demos is waiting to hear the results of the race expecting to win another million dollars from her car, Maud, being driven by Mike O'Donnell and designed by Dennis Rost. Nearby is the grand opening of a new underground drive- inn theater. This is owned by Clarence Schouboe and Wayne Frier. As Robert Singer is ushering us in, the crystal ball begins to fog over, but we know that we have seen all our classmates from our Class of '65. n n ■ Vera Abrams Lynne Anderson Robert Bergstrom Lois Bertsch Du Wayne Bohle Sylvia Bublitz Tom Carlson John Christiansen Joan Crawford Martin Efta Virginia Jestnes Judy Justesen Karen Kalland Lynda Koenig David Huether Frances Hufford Joanne Jensen Brian Flint Linda Fried Ralph Gallo Winona Hall LeRoy Hanson Kenneth Korneychuk Mike Krieger Kermit Krokker Shirley Kruger Kenneth Lacquement 24 Donnie Lain Ronnie Lain Marilyn Lang Renee Leischner Jim Martin Susan Martin Lynn McMillan Irene Mengel Kelley Munsell Wesley Naylor ' I Randie Nelson Virginia Nelson Phyllis Ness Russell Newell Kathy O'Donnell Jean Peterson Bonnie Plummer Gerald Ouenzer Fred Rambur James Rambur Calvin Randall Eddie Renner Linda Kay Rost Robin Roth Rosalie Rustad Linda Sampson Margaret Schoenbeck Shirley Schueffele Betty Schwartz Lester Schwindt Marie Slagter Robert Smeltzer Roberta Sonsalla Steve Spriggs Shari Stark Paula Stenglein Betti Swart Leona Susa Molly Tobin Jerry Townsend Marlene Varner (flasa ©ff iters Jerry Townsend, John Christiansen, Molly Tobin, and Renee Leischner Judy Andrist Barbel Amken Connie A skin Linda Ballou Donna Bass Betty Bertsch John Bickle Gary Brownson Jerry Callen Leonard Chamberlain Nancy Coddington James Cody Linda Coldwell Chan Crawford Tom Demos Alvin Dexter Medora Dinius Douglas Duffield Debbi Eilek Sandra Fisher Kregg Flint Jerry Freier Carol Gaustad Dennis Gilmore Terry Gonsioroski Jerome Goroski Nancy Greenlee Timothy Greve Kenneth Griffith Mike Griffith Jeraldine Gunderson Karin Gundlach Sharon Haar Beverly Hinman Jacueline Hoff Jerel Hoff 28 E -r Reginald Hoff Marilyn Huber Spencer Huether Delbert Hufford Ronald Hunter Earl Hutchings Charlotte Jafek Penny Jensen Steve Jordan Richard Keech Wayne Keech Kathy Kochel Margie Koenig Linda Kollman John Lawler Lynne Madler Raymond Madler David Martin r Larry Masa Margie McClain Jerry McFarland Ray Mengel Jeannine Morrow Linda Napton Christy Nelson Debbie Nicks Jack O’Connor Sharon Opp Tiena Petersen Lonnie Rath Chauncey Robinson Eileen Rambur Nancy Randall Nicky Rindy Robert Rost Mike Roy NOT SHOWN 29 v ■y tl Wayne Rodolph Allen Rustad Jerry Schwindt Gloria Sieler Scott Shepherd Russell Singer Beth Sparks Gerald Spriggs Diane Staudinger John S trie be 1 Class (Officers 30 Kathy Kochel, Jerry Freier, John Striebel, and Tom Demos Annette Abrams Peggy Bagley Becky Barkley Meredith Beck Brian Becker David Blake Kenny Breitbach Deborah Briant Carol Carlson Gordon Carlson Pamela Carlson Donald Crippen Randy Dietz Kent Flatness Sherry Gilmore Clayton Graham Linda Graham Donald Groshans Paulette Groshans Gregory Gunderson Carol Haar Melva Hanson Russel Hanson Lucille Hartse Dennis Hatton Roger Heyen Diane Hoff Gary Holman Donella Holtz Charlotte Huber Calvin Huether Roger Hufford John Jenks Keith Johnson Sharon Karch Jerry Ketchum 32 Reid Kochel Tommy Kohler Karen Krokker Kathy Kusler Judeann LaCross Rita Madler Gregory Malek Randy Martens Faye Morrison Max Munsell Janet Napton Barry Naylor Juline Newell Pamela Nicks Kenneth Olson Craig Paschali Steven Pruett Arlene Rambur Michael Rambur Rebecca Randall George Rankin Dennis Rath Ronnie Rindy Graham Roberts Dale Rost Sue Roy Linda Rudolph Brian Rustad Diane Schell Lana Schimming Patricia Schoenbeck Peggy Schouboe Deborah Schuler James Schueler John Schwindt Terry Schwindt Craig Setine Patricia Shepherd Dale Smith Duane Stadel Clark Steffes David Steffes Terri Stenerson Karen Stevenson Sharon Stevenson Dorothy Susa Boni Swart Virginia Tanner Paulette Taylor John Tronstad Terry Vanderpan Peggy Walker Thomas Walker Vicki Wellenstein Brad Wenz Keith Johnson, Kenny Breitbach, Terry Vanderpan, and Janet Napton lienor loll Glubent« Paulina Peggy Rick Carter Karen Ackerman Bickle Bowen Christiansen Fost Robert Ed Jody Mike Brenda Justesen Lawler Nelson O'Donnell Olson DiAnn Spriggs Michael Steffes Tami Stenerson Nancy Striebel Elaine Schweigert Vera Abrams Linda Fried Virginia Jestnes Sfnnor Stall J§ tubent« (continued) Judith Renee Virginia Rosalie Jerry Justesen Leischner Nelson Rustad Callen Linda Reginald John Lucille Keith Cold we 11 Hoff Lawler Hartse Johnson Judeann Dale Brian James Patricia La Cross Rost Rustad Schueler Shepherd I PHOTO Naf Availabt Patricia Terri Schoenbeck Stenerson Paulette Taylor j$ titfront (Tmmrtl LEFT TABLE: Renee Leischner, Ed Lawler, Elaine Schweigert, Keith Rustad, Jody Nelson, Peggy Bickle, David Huether, Nancy Randall. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Near the beginning of the present century, when the great increases in secondary- school enrollment stimulated the development of the social aspects of the high school through extra-curricular activities, forward-looking educators began to realize that scholarship was not receiving its rightful emphasis among the social and athletic activ- ities which already were holding the center of the stage. Incentives to improve scholar- ships, in the form of honor rolls, special privileges, awards of various kinds, delivering the valedictory and salutatory addresses, letters of congratulations, and scholarship awards, had long been part of the administrative routine of American schools, but each school had its own system of recognition, and little elfort was made to have the student body itself provide the stimuli for scholarship. Finally, in 1903, at the South Side Academy in Chicago, several students started Phi Beta Sigma as an honor society. This group provided the idea and others followed rapidly, until the present NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY emerged as the larger accepted society. The purpose of the NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY is to honor scholastically-talent- ed students and provide a means for them to further apply their talents toward good projects. The association of Honor Society students with each other promotes intensive use of their abilities in accelerated programs sponsored by this especially able group. The Honor Society in a high-school is potentially the most powerful group and should be foremost in activities as it represents the main purpose of high school, developing scholastic talents.
