t •: v The 1964 edition of the Spartan has truly been a challenge to all that have had a part in making it. We hope that as you page through this year's Spartan, you will share with us the fond memories of the activities, classmates, teachers and events tha were a part of the school life at Baker High in 1963-64. Editors Dale Holmlund Vicki Leischner bV It is an honor to one who has become such a genuine part of Baker High School. His interest in his students and his eagerness to help them have endeared him to all who have come under his influence. Because he means so much to so many, we the students of Baker High School dedicate the 1964 Spartan to Mr. Darwin E. Burnett. ADMINISTRATION Sufr€xiHte«tde tt Why Think? Thoughts rule the world . . . thought takes man out of servitude into freedom.”-“Emerson “Thought means life, since those who do not think do not live in any high or real sense. Thinking makes the man.”—Alcott Mr. Lewis ' 'P’UKCifi l Aristotle once said, Excellence is an art won by train- ing and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those be- cause we have acted rightly. We are what we repeated- ly do.” Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit. Our classmates and teachers, We bid you adieu; And dear Baker High School, We’ll ne’er forget you. We'll always remember These glorious years; Glad but somewhat unhappy As the time of parting draws near. We’ve journeyed a long way, It's no time to stop. Commencement's upon us. Let’s strive for the top. Kenny Fried Connie Stevenson CLASS MOTTO: Before us lies the timber—let us build. CLASS COLORS: Mint green and white Graham Munsell CLASS FLOWER: Gladiola On this beautiful day made possible by Alison Livsey, our friend and former classmate, who received the Weather Master Award for X Galaxy, in 2063. Vicki Leischner, Becky Hatton, and Wayne Brownson leave Baker, the Bubble capital of X Galaxy, in their pink, luxurious bubble, the latest in transportation for those who can afford it. We have planned this trip to visit our former classmates in our early 100’s so we can enjoy it to our utmost before we reach our middle ages. Kay Hall, through want of enjoying her happy life longer, had helped us with these plans by supplying us with “ZIP, Zest in Persons. We are now floating over Indianapolis Speedway. As we land we hear our own Donald Schou- boe proclaimed the winner I At Niagara Falls, where we glide under to get our bubble washed, we see Matt Kinsey trying to train his horse to walk the high wire across the falls. At New York Stadium we find Janice O’Connor managing the New York Yankees. As we float by the Statue of Liberty we catch a glimpse of Rosezella Boucher painting the fingernails of the statue. In Washington D. C., now the capitol of the world, as we all helped stamp out communism and it is a free world, we visit with Elaine Hepperle, who is a government official. Janet Abrams is her first secretary, Faye Greenlee is the librarian for the world library building, and Kenny Fried is the public accountant. The statue on the grounds, representing our free world, was de- signed by Colleen Ratliff and constructed by Billy Schwindt. As we are passing over the Ozarks we catch a glimpse of Jim and John MayKay awaiting the results of their new recipe. We stop at Cuba where JoAnn Crow is stationed as a Peace Corps member. Diane Rambur and Linda Braun are both members of the Crops and are stationed in Panama. While in the Caribbean we decide to stop over at Bobin Island, world famous, where Marlene Bobiney has taken up residence and Jerry Knutson, Donavan Simmons, and Jean Fisk are trying to discover why the island bobs. While flying over Venezuela, we drop in to visit Jana Ludwick, who is taking life easy with her husband, who has taken over the company. Gliding up the route of the Amazon we notice a boat docked beside the deep jungle. Out of curiosity we float above the faint trail, which was recently made. We come upon our former classmates Doug Wenz and Raymond O'Donnell in search of treasures. From the deep jungle, we continue to Port Push-off. Here we equip our bubble to go under- water. In the huge electronic shop we talk about old-times with Butch Rediske, the owner. We push off Push-off and before long we are 10, 000 leagues under the Sea. We soon approach the Sub-African Tunnel designed and constructed by Holmlund and Nichols’ Company which was founded by Dale Holmlund and John Nichols. Midway under the continent we stop to eat at the Sub-Soda Wagon which is owned jointly by Frances Walker and Bonnie Bertsch. We continue on through the tunnel and soon we are in the open waters of the Indian Ocean. Sharlamaine, the most beautiful underwater city, is to our right. The first thing that comes to our attention as we enter the city is the magnificent estate of Sharrie Cox. We stop for a visit and find that she has lived here for 20 years, because it is a good place to spend her youth- ful years. (continued) Going down Shanendoeh Avenue, a beautiful arrangement of flowers outside a store catches our eye. We go in and talk to Connie Larson, the proprietor, and Wanda Desper, her artist. While strolling down the avenue we pass Carole Lloyd’s shop, where she is having the grand opening for her beauty salon, Carole’s Creative Coiffures. The next shop is Mademoiselle Marilyn's. She carries JAN originals. The shop is owned and operated by Marilyn Fried, and Janis Kochel is the designer of JAN originals. At the end of the avenue sprawls Roger Rost’s huge supermarket. Bonnie Strahan is his book- keeper. As we are leaving the city, we stop at the clinic to visit with several of our friends working there. Howard Davis is a neurosurgeon, Joan Jensen a R. N., Sarah Weeks a private nurse, Jim Carlson a Lab-Technician, Elmarie Rasmuson a bookkeeper, and Rose Mary Breen a secretary. After leaving the city, we surface to continue to Japan in order to see the prize fights of Mike Correll, Jack Bohle, and Roy Dahl. Jim O’Donnell is their booking agent and takes care of their millions. As we alight in China we visit with Roger Sinclair and Ronnie Siring, who are promoting the sales of their Harley Davidsons. While going to the island of Pyrex, a recently discovered island, we eat at The Floating Fantasy of Fine Foods. It is owned and operated by Verna Chesmore, Alice Madler, and her husband. As we alight on the island of Pyrex we find Steve Schuler who has devoted his life to developing non-breakable chemistry equipment. He also has a contract with Lynnda Malcom to provide her with unbreakable lenses for her glasses. We then decided to see Switzerland and Rome so we turn around and go to the Alps. In the Alps we find Richard Metz on the Matterhorn still writing on his collection of jokes to be pub- lished when it is completed. The beautiful Swiss resort below us is owned by Erna Buerkle. We pick out a newspaper in the world's largest newsstand, which has every daily paper, and which is owned by Don Crow. We notice Connie Stevenson is the editor of The Earth Tribune, so we pick up the paper and read further. The comic strip, Teddy Red is edited by Marlene Gregerson, and we also read Dear Sheilah Fuchs in the women's section. In Rome we find that Graham Munsell has transformed the Parthenon into an exclusive bowling alley complete with a pink balcony around it. As Wayne is waving and smiling at our former classmate Dora Twiford, who is floating by in a sleek blue bubble on her way to Africa where she is a missionary, we are caught in an under current and Wayne chips his tooth so we alight at the Milkyway Dental Clinic where Bob Joyce fixes it and says, There! That will teach you. We then decide to head home again. On our return we find Barbara Celander vacationing at the Hawaiian Islands. We stop in California to visit with Susan Kohler, who's working there. We continue to Las Vegas. We enjoy Las Vegas tremendously because Dave Plummer shows us his casinos. When we arrive in Baker, Wayne returns to his Model T showroom, Vicki leaves to do the spring buying for her chain of stores and Becky joins Sue Tobin and Carolyn Deviney at their Flathead Lake resort. Debbie Plummer comes over from her Buffalo Ranch in Flathead Valley to catch up on things. THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Near the beginning of the present century, when the great increases in secondary- school enrollment stimulated the development of the social aspects of the high school through extra-curricular activities, forward-looking educators began to realize that scholarship was not receiving its rightful emphasis among the social and athletib activ- ities which already were holding the center of the stage. Incentives to improve scholarships, in the form of honor rolls, special privileges, awards of various kinds, delivering the valedictory and salutatory addresses, letters of congratulations, and scholarship awards, had long been part of the administrative routine of American schools, but each school had its own system of recognition, and little effort was made to have the student body itself provide the stimuli for scholarship. Finally, in 1903, at the South Side Academy in Chicago, several students started Phi Beta Sigma as an honor society. This group provided the idea and others followed rapidly, until the present NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY emerged as the largest accept- ed society. The purpose of the NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY is to honor scholastic ally-talented students and provide a means for them to further apply their talents toward good projects. The association of Honor Society students with each other promotes intensive use of their abilities in accelerated programs sponsored by this especially able group. The Honor Society in a high-school is potentially the most powerful group and should be foremost in activities as it represents the main purposes o; high school, developing scholastic talents. EDITOR’S NOTE As you look at these two pages devoted to music in Baker High, we hope you will recall with us the memories behind the pictures. Baker is well known for its music department which year alter year ex- cels at the music festivals. I think we can thank our dedicated and capable directors. Mr. Bruggeman and Mr. Kovash, for this. The pictures show E. Hepperle receiving the John Philip Sousa Award for her outstanding work in band. Next the Pep Band provides the half time entertainment at a basketball game. Look at those new marching uniforms. Aren’t they sharp? Next we see our soloists, P. Bickle, M. Steffes. E. Lawler, and C. Rindy. The next page shows the piano students: Duets. S. Cox and E. Hepperle, and D. Spriggs and L. Fried. Four-hand. B. Olson, C. Stevenson, S. Cox, and E. Hepperle. Both the Girls' Sextette and Boys' Quartet received Superior at State. The Girls' Sextette consists of S, Karch, V. Leischner. P. Bertsch, R. Leischner. M. Fried, and S. Tobin. K. Korneychuck, W. Brownson, K. Fried, and H. Davis make up the Boys' Quartet. Pictured last is P. Bickle and C. Rindy receiving their music camp scholarships. l ocat Tftu ce 'fyour Student (Council K. Gundlach, V. Nelson, M. Fried, S. Cox, R. Breen, K. Hall, S. Tobin, S.
