MOTIVATION NEEDED TO PRODUCE RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS AND STUDENTS One of the most pressing problems confronting the teacher or any person working with other human beings is the matter of motivation. Why do you act as you do? What might cause you to act in the way that someone else wants you to? Or if you are in the position of the one who is attempting to influence the other persong what can you do to 'make him want to do the things you want him to do? In other words, how can you motivate him? The real objectiveg the factor which is contributing to the education of the student, is the meaningful activity in which he engages as he works through the assignment and prepares the lesson. To the extent that the pupils do engage in worthwhile activities and make progress toward desirable goals, to that extent the motivation has been effective. L. W. Heftie Superintendent of Baker Schools Our democracy gives its citizens the freedom of choice. The aim of our school system is to educate our future citizens so that these choices will be wise ones. It aims to help them make many decisions necessary to planning a good life . . . to choose between good and bad, truth and falsehood, beautiful and ugly, what is important and what is trivial, and to appreciate a good book, a good painting or a good piece of music. This type of liberal education belongs to every one regardless of their vocation, and possessing it is what makes the difference between a citizenry of alert, progressive, wise members or one willing to be dictated to by their leaders. L. Fredric Bruggeman Principal, High School ERLENBUSI-I GAMBLES
