THE SUBMERGED NINE-TENTHS Nearly a century ago Professor Henry made his famous ex- periment with a charged magnet, which evolutionized the electrical practice of his age. First he took an ordinary mag- net of large size, suspended it from a rafter, and lifted a few hundred pounds of iron. Then he wrapped the magnet with wire and charged it with the current from a small battery. Instead of only a few hun- dred, the now charged magnet lifted three thousand pounds. It is estimated that we used one-tenth of the power that is inherent in each of us. The other nine-tenths lie dormant. The mind may be compared to an iceberg, with one-eighth above and seven-eighths below the surface of the water. The man whc- charges tis mind by proper training will mul- tiply his every day powers and place himself as far ahead of the average as Professor Henry's charged magnet was over the ordinary one. L. W. Heftie Superintendent Baker Schools v We are all aware that each generation willingly accepts the advances in science, medicine, mechanics, etc., handed down from the previous generation and goes on building from there. And yet in their own personal relationship with their elders it seems that they are loathe to profit by mistakes, and each gen- eration goes on making the same mistakes «regardless of warn- ings and advice. How many, many people have said, ’ 1! only my parents had insisted that I finish school instead of letting me quit or How I wish now that I had studied harder . . . mistakes an older person willingly admits with the hope that his child will not repeat them. However, all too often the child grows to maturity making the same mistakes against which he was warned. This is also true in the fields of social relationship, health, and government. I urge you young people to consider carefully the advice given by your parents and teachers. Profit by the mistakes of your elders and go forward in every way. L.
