THE SPARTAN OF 1957 Jean Morton - Editor Fern Noftsker - Feature Editor BAKER HIGH SCHOOL Baker, Montana BILL SHEENAN Custodian for Lincoln and Washington Grade Schools. Bus Driver Mrs. GEORGE McCAULEY JOHN KLEIN School Secretary Custodian for High School Lincoln School i r Washington School DEDICATION We, the Senior Class of 1957, dedicate these pages in remembrance of our departed classmate and friend, Alice Linden, who with her willingness to help and ready smile has endeared her memory to each of us for all time. THE SUBMERGED NINE-TENTHS Nearly a century ago Professor Henry made his famous ex- periment with a charged magnet, which evolutionized the electrical practice of his age. First he took an ordinary mag- net of large size, suspended it from a rafter, and lifted a few hundred pounds of iron. Then he wrapped the magnet with wire and charged it with the current from a small battery. Instead of only a few hun- dred, the now charged magnet lifted three thousand pounds. It is estimated that we used one-tenth of the power that is inherent in each of us. The other nine-tenths lie dormant. The mind may be compared to an iceberg, with one-eighth above and seven-eighths below the surface of the water. The man whc- charges tis mind by proper training will mul- tiply his every day powers and place himself as far ahead of the average as Professor Henry's charged magnet was over the ordinary one. L. W. Heftie Superintendent Baker Schools v We are all aware that each generation willingly accepts the advances in science, medicine, mechanics, etc., handed down from the previous generation and goes on building from there. And yet in their own personal relationship with their elders it seems that they are loathe to profit by mistakes, and each gen- eration goes on making the same mistakes «regardless of warn- ings and advice. How many, many people have said, ’ 1! only my parents had insisted that I finish school instead of letting me quit or How I wish now that I had studied harder . . . mistakes an older person willingly admits with the hope that his child will not repeat them. However, all too often the child grows to maturity making the same mistakes against which he was warned. This is also true in the fields of social relationship, health, and government. I urge you young people to consider carefully the advice given by your parents and teachers. Profit by the mistakes of your elders and go forward in every way. L. By the time we reached the fifth grade we had a few new students. They were Richard Arehart, Al- fred Grenstiner, James Hurley, Dennis Lovec, Walter McDougall, Jack Brese, Jerome Rasmussen, Robert Perry, Barbara Bell, Ferdella Carlson, Mary Cline, Jean Huber, Bonita Lee, Florence Maier, Jean Mor- ton, Jo Ann Schultz, Sharron Maggerise, and Carol Noftsker. During this time we also lost a few mem- bers. We started Junior High with 15 boys and 19 girls. The new students who came between the fifth grade and High School were Byron Manke, Carol Rose, Mary Lou Woodsend, Norma Kay Clayton, Jerry Gonsioroski, Charles Greenfield, Chester Greenfield, Gene Wintermote, Wilbur Wiseman, Sid Baldwin, Pairrish Meadors, Patsy Brayion, June Bruce, Alice Linden, Laura Pierce, Lenore Pratt, and Fern Noft- sker. In Junior High we took the JC basketball championship at the tournament held at Baker. On November 4, 1956 the first annual Football Day was held. The candidate from our class, Sally Ann Griffith, was the first Football Queen. Although the Spartans lost to the Wolf Point Wolves we had a wonderful time at the dance where we honored the Spartans. Phe Junior Prom was Held April 28, 1956. We honored the mighty seniors in grand fashion by deco- rating the gym in pink, blue, and gray with the theme Poor People of Paris. In the center of the gym we erected our own Eiffel Tower and printed a gay mural with twirling can-can dancers at one end of the room. We served refreshments behind a side-walk cafe. On October 12, 1956 we held another Football Day. Vivian Roy was crowned Football Queen. We made a huge success of the day by winning over the Scobey Spartans. For the first time a parade was held on this day with floats made by each class carrying the Queen candidates. In the judging of the floats, the senior float was judged best. That night we honored the Spartans by having a dance to cele- brate their victory. CARTER SERVICE STATION GAMBLES CLASS POEM Let's go through the doors of fame and begin this poem with some korney name! Ivan is our station boy, he cleans the car windows with joy ! Jean Morton is a soda jerk, she gets in on gobs of work. Carren Newell can be counted on for gossip old and new for the telephone office is the place to hear what others say and do. John E. has been loved and lost by many, the dark, and light and fair; he ain't caught yet but he might be soon, spring fever is in the air. Ramona Bectold hails from out South where the roads are drifted full; she makes it through no matter how bad in time to get to school. Gloria's the gal with the galaxy of chins and she's far from under-weight, she's got a wit and her clever remarks keep classes up to date. Let's talk to A1 Grenstiner here by the door, he says he just can't wait; he's on his way to English VI, half an hour late. Curly Locks Corey is another one, who winks at the girls every day; he says he likes it ... it sure is fun, and it helps pass time away. Rena is tired of single life she has a diamond new -— wants to be a little wife , so she's gonna say, I do . And Florence Maier has got plans too which show on her little left hand, it's dazzling, diamond, and expensive too for some poor hapless man. Pat and Tessie are quite a pair, they're going steady still—if you can't find them anywhere, they're probably out having a thrill ! Anna, our little country lass opened her locker door, someone stacked it while she was in class, and her books fell out on the floor. ( '.lass Poem (cont.) Calvin N. in Chemistry made a mess, which made the whole room smell—-what this kid does in Chemistry class, it's best that we don't tell I Next we have the four Griffitlis—BJ., Ruth, Roy and Sal. Altho- you’d tliink they're related, they’re all just swell pals. Next in lme is our June Bruce, who'll be a secretary when site's turned loose. Then it's Jim, down tlte street he roared — he is happy, him and his Ford . . . Now we have smart Carol Rose; she likes Arlee, as everybody knows. And in our class is our gal Stella, who's pretty hot after that Wryick fella'1 Next comes hot rod Curtis Hucther (can't think of anything to rhyme but etherl) In the line is Barbara Gaustad, one of the best Baker's ever had . . . Among us is Ferdella Carbon—if you've been talking to her boyfriend, you'd bettor run. Jerry Gonsioroski's a liard guy to beat — after graduation he HI be plowing up fields for wheat. Fern Noftskcr is a whiz at business—a natural -born leader; never makes a fuss. Larry Wiseman can be found sweeping up Penny's floor, but lie's usually knocking at Anna Jean's door. Florence Sheehan would Like music as her career; although die is quiet, she's nice to be near .. . Norcen Kohler is known as a cute lirtlc cookie—if she’s not In school (you guessed it)— playin' hookey 1 Patsy Brayton is cramming her head full o facts, a sweet personality is not what she lacks! And now tliis great “poem must come to an end—but let'i do it quickly before wc lose ALL our frlendsl (Sally G.; Gloria S.; Carol R.; Florences.) ■Hr. HOGEBOOK M. D. PROPHEO In the year of our Lord 2000, we, the prophecy committee of '57’ travel in our gold Cadillac on moonbeams to all the planets. Our first stop is at Mercury. There we see Howard Corey and Gloria Steen pestering annual committees in the school where Howard is teaching ad- vanced chemistry and Gloria is teaching speed writing the Powell style. Next we go to another spot on Mercury and find Jean Morton shaking up malts for her grandchildren. Alfred Grensteiner, her husband, is an oil tycoon, who just struck oil for the tenth time. On our next stop at Pluto we find that Ivan Korneychuck has just arrived and is setting up a Conoco Gas Station. We also find Sally Griffith, the oldest cheerleader in the University of Pluto. Traveling to another part of Pluto we find Carol Rose, the second Florence Nightingale operating a hospital for all injured space men, while her husband, Arlee Fried is a mechanic repairing space ships. From Pluto we go to Mars and find Curtis Huether running the Mars Red Owl Store. Ramona Bachtold suddenly decides she wants to leave us to become head sales clerk in Curtis's store. As we travel further into Mars we find Pat O'Neill ( and Tessie Bruha, his wife) running a gambling Casino and Ferdella Carlson and June Bruce are his dancing girls. In the gambling Casino we find Carren Newell, the switchboard operator putting in a long distance telephone call from Mars to Neptune. As we left Mars and were halfway to Venus we saw a little cafe and stopped and who did we find but Betty Jean Griffith serving coffee and hot rolls. When we reached Venus who should we see but John Everson now a famous skid row character. As we travel around on Venus we see Jerry Gonsioroski who just received a whole squadron of flying saucers and is trying one out. Barbara Gaustad and Roy Griffith are getting ready to leave for a honey- moon to the moon. Now we are on Jupiter and we see Eddie Helgeson trying to form a women’s basketball team. He’s already got Florence Sheehan, Patsy Brayton, and Anna Wyrick persuaded to join. We get to Neptune and find Stella Koenig selling TV sets to all the space people. As we tour the University of Neptune we find Jim Hurley, Calvin Newell and Larry Wiseman playing football on the Varsity team. As we go to Earth we find Rena Desper at Ekalaka with Noreen Kohler as her maid. Now we go back home to the moon to our respective jobs (Fern Noftsker, a commercial teacher at the Moon University, Florence Maier and Ruth Grif- fith are giving beauty lessons).
