THE SPHRTfill Of 1954 MIKELL PECK - EDITOR ROBERT SKILES - BUSINESS MANAGER BAKER HIGH SCHOOL BAKER, MONTANA The first thing we need to do is to see that the history of America and American institutions is ade- quately taught in our schools and colleges to the rising generations of Americans. Standards and ideals must be constantly taught or they will perish; for as the older generation dies, its knowledge dies with it. The ideals that have made our country great will live only as they are implanted in the minds of those who are coming on to take the places of those who are passing away. L. W. Heftie, Superintendent Mr. L. W. Heftie Do you have a goal in life? In basketball, the goal is to put the ball through the basket, and the success of the team is measured by how often it ac- complishes this goal. In high school your goal is to graduate and in order to do this you must earn the required number of credits. These goals have been set for you by others, but if you desire success in life you will have to set your OWN goals..goals which will give real meaning and purpose to your day-by- day living. When you awake each morning will you expect the coming day to be the same old grind, or will you awake expecting the accomplishments of that day to bring you closer to your goal? Remember, a per- son can't get anywhere unless he's going someplace. Decide where you are going and then chart your course in that direction. Good luck to you! L. Fredric Bruggeman, High School Principal American Legion Club and Samsel’s Mr. L. F. Bruggeman Dedication The senior class of '54 with sincere appreciation, dedicates our Spartan to Wally MCoach Luetkens, who for the last four years has giv- en of his time and talents to help our class. Hereby we express our grati- tude to him for helping better our school and for just being the swell person he is. With these things in mind we so dedicate our annual. 3 School Board Chairman L. Fallon County Times and B E Shoppe 11 Class History In the year one thousand nine hundred forty-two we entered the first grade. Because of our sweet disposition it required six different teachers to see us through. . . It required only one teacher to hold us in line through the remaining live years of our Eastside career. We finally entered junior high under the dictatorship-a-er-leadership of Lovell Warren. Everybody passed the seventh grade (on condition) into the eighth grade where Robert (Sully) Sullivan was our tutor. In the spring of ’50 we marched upon the stage to receive our diplomas graduating us to the senior high school. In the fall of '50 we entered the infamous halls of Baker High School. For the freshmen year we elected the following officers: President-Betty O'Don- nell, Vice -President-Calvin Lund, Secretary-Treasurer-Sam Weeks, and spon- sor-Mr. McGonigal. After being iormally initiated by the honorable sophomores we officially became students of Baker High School. Nothing exciting happened the fresh- men year except that school got out. After a long three months vacation of fun, our voices again resounded in the halls of Baker High. During the sophomore year our officers were: Calvin Lund-President, Reva Johnson-Vice President, Bonnie Plummer-Seeretary, Shirle Kalland- Treasurer, and Mr. Langston-sponsor. During this term we had the honor of initiating the freshmen. We again came back in the fall of '52 and elected President-Shirley Kal- land, Vice President-Gary Morrow, Secretary-Re va Johnson, Treasur er-Bon- nie Plummer, Historian-Calvin Lund, and sponsor-Miss Casady. One of the highlights of our junior year was our presentation of Meet Cor- liss Archer . It went over with a huge success thanks to Miss Casady. To show our respect for the graduating seniors, we honored them with a prom. The theme was The Old Lamp Lighter with a mural painting on the west wall. At last we entered Baker High School for the last time. This year was spent in stepping on the underclassmen and proving to 'hem that we were the big wheels. This year we elected Sam Weeks-President, Jo- anne Mar tin-Vice President, Janice Loveles s-Secr etary, Shirle Kalland-Tr eas - urer, Calvin Lund-Historian, and sponsor-Mr. Heftie. Our play in the spring, Lost Horizon , was a huge success. Tom McGoni- gal was director and made fine actors of us. After much arguing, debate and good behavior, along with the Warden we were permitted to take a couple of days for sneak day. The kind hearted juniors honored us with a prom in the spring. We went through the usual spring activities which included the spring concert, the music festival, baccalaureate, and last but not least graduation. Gary Morrow Ida Randash Gloria Varner Rose Logar Marvin Reese FROST BOWL No customer too small” 14 ' 15 While we, the prophecy committee of 1954, were sitting in the commercial room, we started to day dream. In the dream it was 1964 and we were given free tickets to tour the United States in a one horse open sleigh. So we hailed a taxi, and who should the driver be but Gloria Olson. She took us to our sleigh. Upon getting aboard the sleigh, we took out like a streak of lightning, but we can see why because our driver was Bob Skiles. Asking him what was the matter, he replied, I jest don't feel good! When arriving in Chicago we stopped and started uptown when who should we see but Gary Morrow carrying a lollipop he had stolen from a little girl. He was being chased by the world famous woman policewoman, Norma Korneychuk. Upon catching him she told us that he was one of the F.B.l. s ten most wanted for stealing from children. Anxiously leaving Chicago we headed for the state of New York. In New York City we went to Broad- way to see Let's Do It Again in which Calvin Lund and Doris Lutts were doing their famous tap dance. While in New York we goto Madison Square Garden to see the light weight boxing championship, we see Bill Lutts shouting, In this corner weighing 98 pounds is Janis Loveless and over in this corner is 98 3 4 pound Donnetta Boucher . Man what a fight it was. After leaving Madison Square Garden, we found ourselves in the Okefenokee swamps of Georgia. VVe saw two figures which we thought were monkeys, but after closer observation we found that it is Bonnie Plummer chasing Betty O’Donnell. (Shows there is not enough men.) Now in Miami we go to the beach to see the Miss America contest and who should we see but Esther Sheehan in the latest Paris bathing suit. She is competing for Miss America and has already won the title. Miss Florida, When looking past the line of bathing beauties we see the judge, Sam Sam the ladys man, Sammy Weeks. Our next stop was in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. We see Ilene Burns beside her trailer house in bare feet hanging out diapers for the twelfth child. (She did decide on Leo after all.) We find Gloria Varner and Byron Wolentz on a goat ranch in Texas. Gloria is out milking the goats and Byron is in the kitchen making cheese and butter with one hand and has his history notes in the t'other. While in Texas we decided to see the oil fields and as we went by one of the trailer houses we see Bald- win's car and about that time we see Avonne (Bahner) Baldwin walking out of the trailer louse. We were in a hurry so we only said Hello . In the Casino in Avalon, Catalina Island, we see a group of men around something and so going over and seeing what it is we see that it is Shirley Rae Ovens selling cigarettes. She tells us that she also sings there. At the. Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, we see Fred Hollibaugh fishing. He is arguing with Mikell Peck that the fish he just caught is a still water fish and not a salt water fish. Mikell told him very polite- ly that it was salt water fish because she took chemistry and when you take chemistry you learn every- thing. We also see Shirle Kalland cleaning Freddie's last catch. Stopping at San Diego we see our wave, Ida Marie Randash. Asking her why she ever joined the waves she told us that Hallie joined the Navy so she joined, too. Upon returning to Baker we find Bob Peterson still trying to teach us foreigners the southern drawl. We, the prophecy committee-Dolores Rustad, Reva Johnson, Marvin Reese, Darvin Schweigert, and Mary Lee Moseley-find ourselves in the insane asylum in Warm Springs. Who should be our nurse but Joanne Martin and she tells us that we were out of our heads. Dolores Rustad, Reva Johnson, Marvin Reese, Darvin Schweigert, Mary Lee Moseley.
