l .-,Z Education Has Double Role Education that does not carry over into conduct is of little value. During the last one hundred years we have shifted the emphasis. We have been busy training, but not necessarily educating- It is important that we teach youth how to make a living, but it is equally or doubly important that We teach youth how to live. The call to what is vital in education is to educate for moral and spiritual values -- ed- ucation for character. L. W. Heftie Superintendent Baker Public Schools Education implies much more than acquiring knowledge through study and learning. It also deals with developing our characters. Recently I heard a statement which seemed to me to be an excellent guide for judging our own characters. It was: Am I the kind of a person that I would want for a friend if I were someone else? This is a challenge to look at ourselves through someone else's eyes and evaluate what we see. Are we kind, loyal, sincere and trustworthy? Do we have a sense of humor ? Do we have a happy disposition and yet can be serious on occasion? Are we res- pectful and reverent? Do we have a sense of duty? These are but a few of the attributes we like to see in our friends. Can we honestly see them in ourselves ? If we can't, now is the time to take inventory and say, as Robert Burns said: Oh wad some power the giftie gie us To see oursels as ithers see us! L.
