During the last one hundred years we have shifted the emphasis. We have been busy training, but not necessarily educating- It is important that we teach youth how to make a living, but it is equally or doubly important that We teach youth how to live. The call to what is vital in education is to educate for moral and spiritual values -- ed- ucation for character. L. W. Heftie Superintendent Baker Public Schools Education implies much more than acquiring knowledge through study and learning. It also deals with developing our characters. Recently I heard a statement which seemed to me to be an excellent guide for judging our own characters. It was: Am I the kind of a person that I would want for a friend if I were someone else? This is a challenge to look at ourselves through someone else's eyes and evaluate what we see. Are we kind, loyal, sincere and trustworthy? Do we have a sense of humor ? Do we have a happy disposition and yet can be serious on occasion? Are we res- pectful and reverent? Do we have a sense of duty? These are but a few of the attributes we like to see in our friends. Can we honestly see them in ourselves ? If we can't, now is the time to take inventory and say, as Robert Burns said: Oh wad some power the giftie gie us To see oursels as ithers see us! L. LAWLER DRUG STORE ,X PROPH ECY In the year of our Lord 1970, We, fVenita, Lavina, Helen, and IoAnj left our big cattle ranch in Amarillo, Texas, With our lives in danger and with Bob Dahl as our chauffeur, we took our first auto ride in a 1965 four door coupe. Coming into Locate on a bright Sunday morning we decided to attend church, As we entered town we noticed a round church inside the city limitsg we spied a neon sign hanging from the roof reading: Jessie Howe -- Pastor. We went in and were amazed at the wonderful sermon she delivered on the subject of Wanting, Capturing, and Keeping Men , Upon coming out of church, we discovered our chauffeur had gone to the Hot Rod Races, where Joyce and Virginia were neck to neck in the finals. Here Lolita Yokley was selling popcorn to make money to buy a fender for a blue Ford. Leisurely traveling through Pennsylvania, we went to breakfast, picked up the morning paper and, much to our surprise, read the shocking headlines: DETECTIVE STEFFES HOT ON TRAIL OF DOPE PEDDLER, We read on to find the dope peddler to be Big Joe Shanahan alias Larry Martin peddling marijuana in the form of candy cigarettes to minors. We then went to New York to visit an old friend, Glenn Smith, now a licensed mortician who was just in the process of embalming the latest deceased body with Rodney Larson fixing the hair in the latest Paris style. Leaving our car in New York,we took the United Airline Constellation enroute to London. We thought we recognized the stewardess, We asked her name, and it was the one and only Connie Gunderson, Walking the foggy streets of London we saw an elderly man, whom we recognized as Rodney Siting , still looking for a woman, but having no luck. Rodney informed us that another of our classmates, Elsie Olson, was working for a Master's Degree in chemistry at Cambridge University. We hired a cab to drive us around to see the sightsg one of the most famous sights was Doris North's Austin Used-Car Lot. That evening after a hearty English meal, we settled ourselves into comfortable chairs to watch the Mattie vs. Mengel wrestling match on T. V, Both were cheating a little for the World's Wrestling Title Our tour took us to Sydney, Australia, where we were lavishly entertained by Sandra Hamilton -- known there as Miss Sheep Queen of 1972. Adjoining Miss Hami1ton's sheep ranch was the Stark-Irvine goat ranch, financed by selling cheese from the famous goat milk. Our last stop before returning to Texas was the scenic land of Hawaii. Upon entering the mainland we saw beneath the beautiful palm trees some figures in grass skirts, whom we recognized as Eddie ROY Waterland. the 'Hula Hangles We now had to rush back to our ranch for spring roundup ff Y if 4,5 i ,fe 1 -- : - gif' L , . fi 5 :N 'e' EI sf 'X V li -f fs i 5 - - -.,.,:-. After passing on condition from the lst grade into the second grade, we gave her such a horrible time that she pushed us into the 3rd grade just for the sake of getting rid of us. After bribing our overseer, Miss Mathieson, we finally fell into the 4th grade. After the usual, much-needed by us and more needed by the teachers, 3 month vacation, we skidded across the hall into the 5th grade and gave the teacher the usual bad time. After enduring all the hardships of school for 9 months, we slid down the hall into the 6th grade, where along with Mrs. Finkbiners musical talent and teaching ability, we managed to finish up at the East Side School We celebrated our accomplishment with the usual end-of-school-year party. Thus we bade the old East Side farewell. After trying to make the next 3 months vacation go like wildfire so we could have the honor of being in Junior High, we started the '7th grade under the superior dictatorship of Mrs. Banta , We completed the 7th grade by the skin of our teeth, only to go back into the 8th grade still trying to get away from Mrs. Banta, At last we were herded on the stage to receive our wonderful diplomas and to sing our songs. , Sandy Hamilton was valedictorian with Connie Gunderson and Carol Irvine as salutorians. Thus we ended our unforgettable Junior High years. Another three months of recuperation was sadly ended as we trudged back as freshman to face the horrible ordeal of initiation, administered to us by the mean ole' sophies. We dressed as comic book characters, and on the last day, a program was held in the gym where we had a chance to display our hidden talent which have never been found. Much to our enjoyment QHA! HAU they sent us all over town on a delightful little scavenger hunt, and later, we were given the honor of painting the B . That night they tried to redeem themselves by giving a dance in honor of us lowly freshmen. Our officers for this year were President -- Carol Irvine, Vice-President -- Larry Martin, Secretary and Treasurer-Historian -- Jeanette Stark, Reporter -- Joyce O'Connor and our sponser was Mr. Haskell. We finished up the year by participating in the spring concert and festival. - We spent a delightful three months vacation raising cane before returning to the beloved prison. We started out the year by electing Carol Irvine President, Vice-President Jeanette Stark, Sec- retary and Treasurer Doris North with our sponsor being Mr. Lanston. We, the mighty sophomores, took out our revenge on the poor freshman by initiating them. The following Friday, we gave the poor little dears a party. This year we elected Elsie Olson and Rodney Larson ashcandidates for the carnival king and queen, with Elsie winning the crown. After suffering from the hardships imposed upon us by the slave drivers, we managed to struggle thru the spring concert and festival, and went home to recuperate for three months. The following fall, we trotted back like willing little salt diggers, to select as officers, Pres- ident Lavina Maier, Vice-President Joyce O'Connor, Secretary and Treasurer Jeanette Stark and Reporter Connie Gunderson, and Miss Casady as our sponsor. The annual Junior play, We Shook the Family Tree , was added to our list of achievements, and went over with a huge success because of the direction of Miss Casady. We also honored the great f?J seniors with the annual Junior-Senior prom, with harbor lights as our theme. , Again we topped the year off with the usual concert and music festival, and dragged ourselves home, not to return until the following September as mighty Seniors ! This year we elected Joyce O'Connor as President, Doris North, Vice-President, and Jo An Phebus as Secretary-Treasurer and Mr. Heftie as our sponsor. Everyone looked up at us as big wheels fSo we thought!J. This year the juniors showed us how much they appreciated us by giving a prom in our honor. We took the usualvacation from school this year called skip-day. Having concluded our final days of education in the halls of Baker High, we participated our talents in the usual spring ac- tivities, which included the play, music festival, and the spring concert, Thus we ended up our 12 years with Baccalaureate and finally Commencement.
