DEDICATION MISS CASADY This issue of the Spartan is respectfully dedica- ted to Miss Catherine Casady for her non-tiring work and efforts in making Baker High School one of the best. She is retiring with the Seniors of 1951, and will make her home in St. Paul. We, her Junior class of 1950, will ever be grateful for all she has done for us. We hope that she will enjoy the future as much as we have enjoyed her in the past. Best of Luck to you, Miss Casady! l BAKER HIGH SCHOOL In the hallowed halls of this building we, the Senior Class, have gained much of our knowledge. It is with great regret that we leave it, for it is here where we not only fought our battles but also had a great deal of fun and made many lasting and beautiful friendships. VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE BUILDING The New Agriculture Building of which Baker Com- munity is just proud. It is here that many boys are learning a vocation for the future years. 2 Chairman--L. PRICE Clerk--MRS. HITCH ROY McCLAIN VIC NORTH I The Baker High School Board meets the first Monday of each month. Through the hard work of Mr. Heftie and the board, the Baker High School now has a new Agriculture Building and equipment. The project has been long needed. The Board of Education also helps to pro- mote the activities of Baker. CAL LUND LEE MOLINE This page sponsored by J. C. PENNEY CO. YOUNG MARTAIN, ATT. AT LAW What No Smiles? In the cellar of Old Baker High Af Try Dieting! ! Sponsored by RED WHITE CABINS and LAWLER DRUG Members of the graduating class: This occasion signifies a change of your status in the Baker High School. Though some ol you will continue residence in the Baker community, most of you will leave the family headquarters to pursue life and labor elsewhere. In answeringcalls to service the mem- bers of previous classes have scattered widely over the state and the nation. No doubt this will be true of the class of 1951. Wherever you go, and as long as you live, you will be known as Baker High School men and women. On this occasion we hope that you feel gratified for edu- cational assistance that you have received. We hope that each of you has attained a constructive and helpful philos- ophy of life. Wherever you may go, our interest goes with you. May the satisfaction of useful service be yours. L. W. HEFTIE Superintendent of Baker Schools L. FREDRIC BRUGGEMAN High School Principal An educated manis not one whose memory is trained to carry a few dates in history--he is one who can accomplish things. A man who cannot think is not an educated man, however many college degrees he may have acquired. Think- ing is the hardest work anyone can do .. . which is probably the reason why we have so few thinkers. There are two ex- tremes to be avoided; one is the attitude of contempt to- ward education, the other is the tragic snobbery of assuming that marching through an educational system is a sure cure for ignorance and mediocrity. You cannot learn in any school what the world is going to do next year, but you can learn some of the things which the world has tried to do in former years, and where it failed and where it succeeded. If education consisted in warning the young student away from some of the false theories on which men have tried to build, so that he may be saved the loss of time in finding but by bitter experience, its good would be unquestioned. MOLINE AND SON CLASS PROPHECY One sunny afternoon in the year 1971 on Wall Street, Richmond Pea- se spied by chance, and snapped a photograph of, the remains of the class of '51. Darrel Rost, to our suprise, was the main attraction for the World's Champion Boxing Crown! Allen Wildish was walking down the street with his four sets of triplets and his dear wife, Phyllis Olson. Gloria Plummer and Melvin Wolenetz were, for the fourth consecut- ive week, starting in the P. D. Q. production of Cheaper by the Doz- zen , Mr. Pease called for his private helicopter, run by Ace Martin O'- Connor and Co-Pilot Edward Malenovsky, and flew out to the country to see Bernice and Carl on their Mink Farm in Iowa. (Bernice was deter- mined to have the first mink coat and Carl is still working for it. ) When all of a sudden, through the clear blue sky, came Gretchen's sere am -- H-a-r-v-e-y C-y-r Come out from under that shade tree and feed the pigs, because our hired man, Dalbert Wiseman, and our hired girl, Florence Scoles, ran off together. After our brief visit to these two lovely couples we again took off, this time to the Ozarks; and who do we spy but David Weeks and his dear wife Irene Hartse. She was pulling the plow while David was slurping up a batch of mountaindew from Bud Boucher's still on the hill. Betty was packing hooch to the root celler on her back! ! ! Ashley Corbett, having broken her engagement to Klauzer and run off with her dreamboat, Joseph Kirschten, is now hiding in the Ozarks from Klauzer and his big gun, Mr. Pease, after consuming his normal amount of corn likkler (six gallons without stopping), staggered into his helicopter, left his students from long ago, and zig-zagged away into space. On arriving in Baker who should he meet but Doctor Lyle Seaman and his devoted wife and nurse Darlene Cretsinger. They were going on a call to farmer Rolph Tunby's, whose pig was expecting some little baby pigs which they thought might be born with a cold. He sent Darlene back to get some medicine from Joy Johnson's store, who was partner with Ronald Stanhope. (By the way, Ronald made his stake by hauling houses and ?????). Mr. Pease decided to get a bit to eat so he stopped in at Hazel's and Elmer's Cafe; and who was eating in a corner booth but Corkey, Vir- ginia, and some little Corks? Norma was chief cook and bottle washer --mainly bottle washer. Then he decided to relax a bit by going to a movie. When he got there Erna Mae was explaining to the audience why there was no movie--her husband Gritch was suffering from a two-week hangover. Mr. Pease went then to the basement (? ) to the now converted bar where he watched Pauline and Della wrestling on television; Joyce Mort- on was refereeing. After this he listened to the hit tunes of the week sung by Bernice Sleeth and her husband Lenoard Wang, accompanied by Donna Olson on the bagpipes. Getting tired, he decided to go for a stroll to the World's Flashiest Night Club; and who were the torch singers but Genevieve Hayes and Donna Defferding. After seeing this dazzling show he decided to go to to his room and drift off into real life. After the publishing of this Annual, the Prophecy staff were exter- minated for some unknown reason, Genevieve H. Donna D. Ronald S. Bud B. CLASS HISTORY The beloved class of '51 began our illustrious careers in 1939 as the gentle, polite, well-behaved, and intelligent young people that we are today. Half of us were under the supervision oi Miss Donovan (poor thing) in the South Side School; the East Side kids were under the supervision of Miss Sieberts in the East Side School. We joined forces (such as they were) in the 3rd grade. Then after an uneventful 3 years, we entered Jr. Hi (panl pantIt was during these 2 years of catering to the teachers and hours of hard studying that we earned our reputation as the most unmanageable and worst class in the schoolhouse. We finished the Jr. Hi with Rolph Funby, vale- dictorian and David Weeks saluatatorian. Our overseer was Mrs. Banta. Then came high school. SI of us started as freshmen. Our Presi- dent was DuWayne Johnson, Vice President was Dalbert Wiseman, Seeretary-Treasurer Robert Rountree, Historian Norma Corey, and Sponsor Mrs. Derr. On September 24th the sophomores gave us the traditional workout to initiate us. We were made to wear Indian costumes, carry papooses, and have a string of tin cans. This year was ended by almost everyone participating in the Spring Concert and Music Festival. After a long, hard 3 months vacation of fun, our voices again rang out in the halls of Baker High. Our first event was election of officers. Joyce Morton, President, Patricia Oldis, Vice President, Bernice Sleeth Secretary, and Paul Venell, Treasurer. Our Sponsor was Mrs. Cassidy. 34 of us started that year. This was our turn to shine. We made the Freshmen wear individual character costumes and after one day of beating on them and treating them like dogs , we felt sorry for them and gave them a party. Again, the Concert, Music Festival and 3 months vacation. This summer we lost Betty Hufford, she had been with us for 10 years. As Juniors we elected David Weeks, President, Bernice Sleeth, Vice President, Donna Defferding, Sec retary - Treasurer, and Miss Casady, Sponsor. This being the first carnival of our school, we elected Joy Johnson and Paul Venell as King and Queen candidates from our class. Our Junior class play, June Mad”, on December 9th, was enjoyed by the whole community. The highlight of that year was the Prom, held on May 12 in honor of the Seniors. The theme was a Chinese Tea Garden. The king and queen were Zeke Lund and Nadine Everson. The spring concert and music festival finished off the year. During the 3 months that followed we lost to Worland, Wyoming, a student who had shared our deviltry for 1 1 years, namely, Paul Venell. At long last, we entered Baker High for the last time. That year was spent in making the underclassmen think we were the Warden's pets. Our class officers were David Weeks, President; Hazel Schettler, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer was Wayne Murphy (substitute Frna Mac Wang) and sponsor was Mr. Heftie, and this being our Senior year, he graciously consented to accompany us on our sneak day (not that we needed watching or anything) The Juniors showed their humble- ness toward us by giving the prum in our honor. Wc finished our high school careers with the usual spring activities, including the play, Mubic Festival, concert, I accaiuareate, and finally commencement. Norma Corey Phyllis Olsen Joy Johnson Darlene Cretsinger CLASS WILL To the faculty, we the Senior Class of 1951 leave all the headaches and troubles of graduating next year's seniors. To the Seniors we leave our ability to sneak out of school. To the Juniors we leave our lockers -- and KEEP THEM CLEAN. To the Sophomores we leave our exceptionally good manners. To the Freshmen we leave all the luck in the world. Walter Boucher leaves his magic touch with an auto to Mr. Luetkins. Carl is very happy now that Bernice leaves to be a full-fledged house- wife. Donald Christianson leaves to follow Bob Burkett's footsteps. Darlene Cretsinger leaves her drawings to decorate the halls forever. Ashley Klauzer leaves her Home Ec. Class to anyone who likes to eat. Harvey Cyr leaves to go to work on a farm. (Mengel's?) Donna Defferding leaves her ability to play while the cat's away to Jessie. Irene Hartse leaves her quiet manners to Jeanette Stark. Genevieve Hayes leaves her boyish ways to Doris (Butch) North. Johnson leaves with Joy. Clarence Kreager leaves to make Mr. Heftie very happy. Joe Kirschten leaves to straighten things up after each Halloween. Della Lutts leaves her dignity to Tom Biffle. What will he do with it? Eddie .eaves his masterly ways with women to Rodney Siring. Joyce Morton leaves her witty remarks to Sandy Hamilton. With her own, Sandy should have quite a collection. Virginia leaves her Pontiac for a Hudson. Donna Olson leaves her sisters. That's all she's got left. Phyllis Olson leaves her dainty feet to Laura. Martin O Connor leaves his heart breaking ways to Tom McGonigal. Gloria Plummer leaves her ways of getting by to Carol Irvine. Darrell leaves his blushing ways to Myra Corbitt. Lyle leaves his girlish figger to Doug Plummer. Hazel leaves to become the first woman president of the U. S. Florence Scoles leaves her devilish ways to Connie Gunderson, in Mr. Pease's study hall. Pauline leaves her awful temper to Russel Wiseman. Bernice Sleeth leaves Mr. Luetkins wondering how she ever made it. Ronald leaves Mr. Heftie. (Rue wanted to take him along but Warden wouldn't go. ) Rolph is the last of 8 Tunby's to leave from BHS. Erna Mae leaves so some of the other girls will have a chance. Leonard already left to help Uncle Sam. Allen W. leaves his vast height to Gary Hurley. Dalbert leaves his nickname to Ed Sikorski. (Pee Wee) Melvin is leaving, and by heck he's taking all he's got. David leaves his choc, shakes to Mike S. Look at what they did to David. Ashley David Dalbert Bernice S. CLASS SONG Dear Baker High School We're leaving you. We know you'll miss us; We'll miss you too. Our years of waiting. We've worked so hard (?) To get those A's and B's and C’s and D's on all our report cards. Dear Baker High School, We'll not forget you each passing year; And someday we'll come back To see you as aging Alumni; But now we'll have to leave Dear Baker Hi. To the tune of April Showers Pauline Skidmore Erna Mae Wang Della Lutts Donna Olson CLASS POEM We’ll start with Boucher, he drives a nice car, And when you see him Betty's not far. Darlene, who is one of the smartest, Will someday make a darn good artist. Bernice C. last summer went on a spree, Guess what??? She got married, hee hee hee! Virginia Neary is a crazy thing. And now she has a diamond ring. Harvey Cyr is big and strong. But with Gretchen he is never wrong. Irene has taught her Grenstiner to sing the song with her name, She plans for his singing to bring them great fame. Genevieve is a little thing, But still she has quite a fling. Donna D. 's favorite hobby, Is going out with Bobby. Norma and Joy their batons they do twirl. And at the dances they really can whirl. Della plans to be a school teacher. If she doesn't first stand before a preacher. Allen Wildish is a shy little lad, But when it comes to girls he doesn't do so bad. Pauline Skidmore has a nice name, But soon it will be linked with one from Rhame. Lyle Seaman is a speed demon. And when he sees Quincer he really is beamin'. Bernice S. says she is going to beauty school. Who does she think she’s trying to fool??? Ronald has quite a fast line, And to all the girls he says Will you be mine? Martin O'Connor is our little guy, And around the girls he is very shy. Joyce and Florence are very good friends, And we hope their friendship never ends. Edward really works quite hard. Maybe someday Haskell will make him a pard. At 8:15 you hear a blast, Kirschten has gotten to band at last. In Chemistry Rost is not so bright, But in Mechanical Drawing he does all right. Melvin's future plans are to marry- Over the threshold who will he carry???? Gloria Plummer is not so tall, Still she doesn't do bad at all. David Weeks is our big boy, And he is always filled with joy. Erna Mae always seems quite gay, Even tho her boyfriend is quite far away. Pee Wee is not very tall. Maybe someday he’ll grow up after all. Rolph Tunby is our brilliant guy. He will make a good husband by and by. Phyllis Olson is a cute little lass. She giggles in almost every class. In classes the roll call the teachers check, Donna O. absent--no just late by hecki 1 Ashley Klauzer is a cute little blond. And wherever she is Larry is found. Leonard Wang is our Service guy. He will make out all right in the sky. Hazel is a tall gal. And everyone seems to be her pal. Donald C. works in the theater, And he is really a she hater. Corky Kreager is on our football team, And when he gets that ball he has a lot of steam. Now since the names have all been used, We hope no one will feel abused, Nor think 'twas done for ought but mirth. Before they let our class disperse. Bernice C.
