In lzonor of . . . We the Students of Baker Senior High dedicate this 1974 yearbook to Herman Stieger. Who is Herman Stieger? Herman Stieger is the fun-loving face you see at all the football practices, basketball games and track meets. Mr. Stieger was graduated from BHS in 1917. From school, he made his career with Western Electric Co. This job dealt with communications, mostly putting up telephone offices along the Pacific Coast and down into Nevada. Mr. Stieger retired in 1962 and returned to Baker in 1965. In his life, this athletic enthusiast, has coached a little League baseball team, helped with the Walla Walla Junior High football team and also with the wrestling squad. Along with being a sports fan, Mr. Stieger enjoys the outdoors. He and his wife take pleasure in going to the moun- tains and getting acquainted with nature and all it has to offer. The Stieger's were both involved with show dogs when they lived in Walla Walla, Wash. Mr. Stieger was the President of the Walla Walla Kennel Club for five years. The Stieger's have two poodles and they attend many of the various dog shows around the area. Mrs. Stieger teaches a 4-H dog class in her spare time. At the close of the football season, the Lettermen's Club made Mr. Stieger an honorary member and presented to him a 1ettermen's jacket. This was given to him for his unique interest in the students and their performances in sports. Mr. Stieger plans on continuing to lend a helping hand whenever possible at all the sports events scheduled in the future.

July 28 starts the celebration of Baker city's 100th birthday. Special contests, selling booths, state level politicians to come speak, antique pioneer craft show, ice cream socials and a historical pageant are just some of the things being planned to help the special occasion along. Store fronts along Main Street will be built to represent the old pioneer days along with authentic pioneer dress worn by the town merchants. Some of the booths will include demonstrations on quilting, butter churning, saddle and boot making and other lost pioneer crafts. Special events planned are a rubber raft race, puppet show and music in the park. The above picture shows an angle of Baker from Fireside hill taken in 1903.
