We the Students of Baker Senior High dedicate this 1974 yearbook to Herman Stieger. Who is Herman Stieger? Herman Stieger is the fun-loving face you see at all the football practices, basketball games and track meets. Mr. Stieger was graduated from BHS in 1917. From school, he made his career with Western Electric Co. This job dealt with communications, mostly putting up telephone offices along the Pacific Coast and down into Nevada. Mr. Stieger retired in 1962 and returned to Baker in 1965. In his life, this athletic enthusiast, has coached a little League baseball team, helped with the Walla Walla Junior High football team and also with the wrestling squad. Along with being a sports fan, Mr. Stieger enjoys the outdoors. He and his wife take pleasure in going to the moun- tains and getting acquainted with nature and all it has to offer. The Stieger's were both involved with show dogs when they lived in Walla Walla, Wash. Mr. Stieger was the President of the Walla Walla Kennel Club for five years. The Stieger's have two poodles and they attend many of the various dog shows around the area. Mrs. Stieger teaches a 4-H dog class in her spare time. At the close of the football season, the Lettermen's Club made Mr. Stieger an honorary member and presented to him a 1ettermen's jacket. This was given to him for his unique interest in the students and their performances in sports. Mr. Stieger plans on continuing to lend a helping hand whenever possible at all the sports events scheduled in the future. -udii' vi H y f if ww - . 'w-.. 1 I S ...fgaxl L' .' .Q ll -. V , 'ff-i.1.sia:' X ,.. . We the students of Baker High School dedicate this page of the 1974 yearbook to the Baker City Centennial. July 28 starts the celebration of Baker city's 100th birthday. Special contests, selling booths, state level politicians to come speak, antique pioneer craft show, ice cream socials and a historical pageant are just some of the things being planned to help the special occasion along. Store fronts along Main Street will be built to represent the old pioneer days along with authentic pioneer dress worn by the town merchants. Some of the booths will include demonstrations on quilting, butter churning, saddle and boot making and other lost pioneer crafts. Special events planned are a rubber raft race, puppet show and music in the park. The above picture shows an angle of Baker from Fireside hill taken in 1903. Mr. Track M 'w Chuck Lissman Chuck Lissman, Mr. Track for 1974, competes strongly in three main events. They are long, triple, and high jump. Chuck said that he scored most of his points in the long jump but when they had the triple jump he won it three out of four times. Chuck has been out for track two years and says it's surprising how much fun it is and it's all individual, if you work hard it shows up in the meet. He practices about three to three and one half hours a night six days a week. Chuck wishes the track season would be longer so he could have more time to develop. The aides help out in the office, the library, and classes. Types of classes range from Typing to Shop and the aides learn through experience when they are helping others. Being an aide also helps a student decide if they want to carry on into a teaching career. Student aides also help the teachers by eliminating smaller tasks and giving the teachers more time for larger problems. Students and teachers alike agree that this is a valuable and effective program. My up MAth1et1 irector Aid 'LM-0' Mus ic Literature iff'-1, :f'?g,2:i in . 1 r . QW. A case of mistaken identity enthralled the audience at the BHS fall play Charley's Aunt. The famous play set in the 1890's tells the love story of Kitty Verdun and May Spettigue. Their guardian, Stephen Spettigue, is an old selfish man who each year hurries the girls off to some out of the way place where there is no chance for the girls to meet anyone of their ovm age. Charles Wykeham and James Chesney, who are very much in love with the girls, have invited them for an afternoon of tea and crumpets. The plot thickens when Charley's Aunt, Donna Lucia D' Alvadorez, is delayed and cannot come to stay with her beloved nephew. The fellows, lacking a chaperone, make haste to find a replacement. By way of chance, Lord Fancourt Babberley, a neighbor, who lives down the hall has a part in a small theatrical play where he portrays an old lady. Babbs stops to tell his friends of his success in the play and tries his costume on for Jack and Charley. Caught in the old lady's costume when the girls come, he is mistaken for Charley's Aunt. Thus the fun begins. MQW Holly Carter looks disgusted, as Ron Dickison gets carried away puffing about himself. My, Charlie has an interesting old lady for an aunt, doesn't he ? Babbs gets in a few extra puffs while the girls are out getting some fresh air. Mespkzn play fire part 'I OWN This crazy bunch hanging in the tree, are the 1973-74 Thespian club officers. Patti played it smart and kept both feet on the ground, while Lynn and Ron struggled getting back dovsm out of the tree. 136 4 Richard Domey first got his interest in Drama when he was a junior in high school. There, he participated in three plays. Dur- ing the first three years in college, he tried out and won roles in every production. His dramatic interest led him to taking every class in speech and drama offered at EOSC. From there he went on to teaching at BHS. Mr. D. took over the dramatic productions during his second year teaching. His success at BHS include the very serious J. B. , the delightful comedy Harvey and The Miracle Worker. He considers his best set to be in the Star Spangled Girl and Charley's Aunt.' His all time favorite was the memorable Dracula where 750 kids screamed in unison. A well done performance, celebrated by a fantastic cast party afterwards, is what the Thespian Club at BHS likes to accomplish. This year the troupe showed their dramatic ability in Charley's Aunt by Brandon Thomas and The Emperor's New Clothes by Charlotte Chorpenning. According to Direct- or, Richard Domey, The Thespians have nev- er had as much experience with breaking dovnm sets and setting them up again and them put- ting on a performance. The Emperor's New C1othes gave student actors an opportunity to experience first hand the work and subsequent rewards accomplished by a traveling theatre troupe. The 10 points required to be pledged as a Thespian, comes from working with the plays. Either having a part or helping back stage on the sets. Each year, usually in May, the club has an initiation banquet for all the students that have worked and have gained their 10 points. They are then pledged as Thespians and the next year's officers are elected. In April, the club was invited to EOSC to participate in a dramatic festival. This summer, the club will have the chance to work in small plays at the Crossroads Art Center. There will also be an acting festival and workshop around July. Also, at BHS this year, is Bente Mikkelsen, right. She is sponsored by the Rotary Club and stayed with the Grover Mann family and also the Glenn Bates family. Among the activities the club participated in this year, were working in the candy counter the 2nd nine weeks to raise money, selling Christmas cards and sponsoring a dance, the end of AFS week, April 15, 21. AFS week consists of having other exchange students come from other schools in the surround- ing area. Usually, eight to ten students arrive the middle of the week and leave on Sunday. Activities during their stay, consist of a swimming party and picnic, a tour of the plywood mill and the Crossroads Art Center, a dance, a party at the Kuhl's home, a talent assembly performed for the student body, and a banquet for the visiting stu- dents and for the adult and student members of the club. The club has numerous get-togethers during the year, including an orientation party, where the new exchange students share their countries and customs with us. The exchange students that went from BHS the previous year, are also there and they tell of their foreign experiences. This or- ganization also gives a Christmas party. In January, Mrs. Eloise Dielman brought the troupe together for a slide show. She showed slides of places that she and her husband had either lived in or had been to. Cathy Allen, editor, commented on the big change, The name, 'Agape', a Greek word meaning 'brotherhood', was .thought of by Lynn Edmondson. A change of name was needed because last year's staff changed the cover but not the name. A cover and name that fit together was established by the new staff. The different style was decided on by the group by looking at different ideas and they saw that their choice wasn't any more expensive and it was easier to carry. A lot of time was consumed in making this book of collected poetry. Cathy estimated she spent forty total hours on the hook, thirty of those were during Spring vacation. Her job as editor included organizing all material and making sure typing, spelling, and language was correct. An editor also gets to do work that others don't get done. The photography added to the new book was done by Cathy Allen and Cathy Quigley. A lot of the copy was from the reading and composition class. After a hard year of collecting and critiquing copy, the group celebrated the publication of the book with a pizza party at the Grizzly Bear. Standing by as advisors of the Agape were Ms. Godard and Ms. Bayless. i L l . 5 if A 1 u- - , 6 Kris Sackos 5911.1 Wirth . I 'X . X f '3.' 5. es! 5 fj J H .b . . s ,,xv. i r,4 s Q .
